I have personally talked to an FBI Agent, and she said that they don't go as crazy about people that download things for personal use compared to people that download them to sell.
He does have reason in his video. I do believe that these companies are not out for the common good of the people. After all most artist make a large portion of their money selling merchandise and concert tickets.

After watching this full part 1 & 2, I can say with confidence that Greg Solomon has, without a doubt, THE MOST twisted, perverted sense of moral equivalency and murky, misguided ethics that I have EVER heard!
GREG, YOU HAVE A HUGELY WARPED SENSE OF ETHICS AND MORALITY!!
He thinks that only stealing a PHYSICAL CD from a store, is "stealing" Well WHY THE FUCK do people steal/purchase CDs, software, etc, if not to acquire what is ON THEM?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Greg, you're obviously an intelligent and well-read man, but unfortunately, your opinion on STEALING MUSIC is FULL OF SHIT.
When you download a "free" song, you're stealing money DIRECTLY from the artist who created that piece of music.
Sadly, you have conflated the RIGHT of an artist to be compensated for their WORK with the GREED that a separate entity makes by marketing either that artist or his product.
THE ARTIST LOSES THEIR COMPENSATION WHEN YOU STEAL MUSIC!
another thing are the boxes of skittles they have a box about 3 times bigger than a normal bag but when you open the box theres another package inside holding the skittles that is the same size as a normal bag
The comparrison is faul and downright unethical. Copyright law and packaging is not something you can mix and match and compare. Now if you spend 3-4 years on developing a piece of software, or record a song, and spend a fortune doing it, you'll be happy RIAA exists... Yes it's about money. It's about whether Madonna can keep "working" as songwriter/performer, or everyone rips her off by downloading the music and she no longer can sustain her buisness of music. Get a little perspective..
This is a good point. Why are consumers expected to be ethical when businesses are not? The law is on the side of the corporations and not the customers. Why can we be said to be stealing when they can do so legally?
I'm not sure if you're still using youtube or not, but I thought I'd comment anyway:
is downloading music legal? no
is it ethical?...
that depends on your thoughts regarding intellectual property. In my opinion, you have no right to share or distribute someone elses work, if it is against their wishes.
you made a refference to the internet being a community where people share valuable information (music, programs).
many people share programs that they created, in the form of 'freeware' (linux being an example). some people share songs that they wrote/played/recorded. that's ethical.
is it ethical to share the products of other people's work (knowing that in doing so, you're denying money to the person that produced the program/music)? I'm not so sure
Memorex did not want to stock two different kinds of cd containers. No surprise. Plus it was probably more compatible with existing shelving in record and electronics stores.
another way to look at the packaging issue is like you were talking about earlier, the bottom dollar, one reason they package the cd-r like that is so they only have to make 1 die instead of 2, they can cost thousands to make, OR they could do it so people like us make the mistake and NOT look at the contents
Right on man. I only wish more people thought like you when it comes to those of us who use the internet as a resource to share music and such. I love the way you think. You keep talking and I'll keep listening. :)
Just common man, speaking of common sense of ethics and how he really feels about things that are happening right now to the common men like you and me out there. A very commendable effort of him to do this video and show the world and people, who might otherwise believe what the big corporates have to say.
As you mention the industry's greed: I know people who download and load and load... as much as they can, just because they can and it's "free". They will never look at all those movies, listen to the CDs, they even won't have the time to. It's just pure greed.
One should not forget that behind this abstract "industry" thing it's men, too - greedy men, like you and me.
The singer of the band Disturbed said he didnt care if people downloaded music. He said he didnt make much off of album sales, he just says as long as people come to concerts he doesnt care.
Hello Greg, I am just writing because I admire your way of reasoning, and I am astonised about you capacity of analysis and observation. When I grow up I want to resemble you, sincerelly.
Ethics is, in fact, not generally practice of common sense. (Ask any utilitarian) :) I am asking that you clarify precisely what you mean by the use of the term Ethics.
I feel as though I ought to post some sort of disclaimer before I post anything here. It is not my intent to attack any user, including Mr. Solomon, but to clarify precisely the content of the video presented.
I am an Ethicist. It is what I do, per se. As I have been working on my Thesis in Philosophy, I have run across many definitions of Ethics. In this video, you relate Ethics to common sense. However, at this point, I must object.
Also, Climaco1160 makes a good point. While it's not 'illegal' to have a file on your computer, it is illegal to share that file without proper licensing. Funny that you're allowed to make an archival copy for your own purposes (provided you own or have license to it), but if that archival copy happens to become available to someone else (in cases where people may not now much about their computer/file sharing) then the burden is on you for making the file available (even if unknowingly.)
As sad as it is, it seems as though "packaging and marketing" is a good 80% deception, 19% truth, and (at best) 1% ethical.
Laws (specifically, business law) are a necessary evil I think. But you have to wonder who are they serving? Yes, they serve and protect the consumer sometimes. They protect the innocent sometimes, but the overwhelming majority of the time, they benefit and serve the corporations.
great vid, I feel I always learn something when ever I watch any of your videos.
I borrow CDs and DVDs from friends all the time then I rip them onto my computer... is that ethical? Also, I have a question about proxies. When ever I share I make sure to connect to the internet using a proxy. I know sharing isn't necessarily legal but is using a proxy to hide my identity legal?
Using a proxy to masquerade or hide your identity is not illegal, but be aware that most proxies don't really provide anonymity. Anytime you send a packet onto the Internet, it is traceable to some degree. There are some decent proxies (anonymous) out there; just Google Anonymous Proxy and you'll get a host of results.
