I so love this song, and the band. I've never grown up myself! I'm 50, have a 21 year old son who plays guitar and introduced me to Smashing Pumkins and other stuff. Used to only listen to classic rock.
Why the hell does Justin Beibers name always pop up in the comment section to a totally unrelated video? This is Smashing Pumpkins...Talk about Justin on Justins video.
Watched this video hundreds of times on MTV back in the day... this is the first time I noticed the cameo of Vince Vaughn playing the cop. Then again Swingers came out the same year as this song... so I probably didn't know who the hell Vince Vaughn was yet.
I remember when i saw this song on MTV back when they actually had quality music videos. The early and mid 90's were truly a creative and epic time. And in my opinion these days it's time once again to toss conformity to the curb and get creative again because we need it now more than ever.
A time without Facebook. No iPods. Cassettes were fading out and CDs were fading in. A year of no technology - vs. - technology. Good times were had without the fear of permanent digital retribution.
Billy is such a huge inspiration to me. Im 15, and a couple years ago, I would rather sit at home and play videogames than go out and have fun. But this song/video really inspired me to get out there, because these times are probably going to be the best years of my life. And someday, when im about 30 and out of college and taking on challenging adult life; I will have memories with me that will last a lifetime.
@moomiss You're in to something there. I've been there, done that. I am 43 and I the memories. Go out there. Live your life. It won't come back. The only thing you can do is to regret.
This is when music videos were good... now in the rare chance you catch a music video on tv its of people pouring out drinks and throwing money... no substance... you wanna say someone sold out? How about an entire generation of music....
Really good song from a monster of an album- and nice video. I was a senior in HS and remember our band rock played at house parties: loud amps, drunk chicks, moms threatening to call the cops . Great fun! It brings back memories, though the best clip was of the teens riding in the back of the car just... going......... nowhere.....That seems to capture that age the best for me.
DEAR ALL ROCK AND NIRVANA FANS, FEBRUARY 20TH IS KURT COBAIN'S BIRTHDAY. THAT DAY WE WILL ALL VISIT THE "SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT" VIDEO, LIKE IT, AND WISH HIM A HAPPY BIRTHDAY. NOT ONLY WILL IT PAY BACK RESPECT TO HIM, IT WILL ALSO HELP NIRVANA GET TO THE TOP OF YOUTUBE AGAIN. THUMBS UP THIS COMMENT AND REPOST THIS ON ANY NIRVANA OR ANY ROCK VIDEO.
No reason we shouldn't all still act a bit like this at 57. Maturity is always equated with our ability to submit these days. We can be mature, (e.g. not fucking around in the convenience store) but still fight for our right to have a private conversation on the phone with out having to worry about the government or anyone else listening in at their whim.
Don't "grow up," kids. It's all a lie and it isn't worth it. Stay free.
@JiffyNo0b Best comment I've read in weeks. Things sure were different even when this album first came out. Things have changed too quickly. And not for the better either.
@JiffyNo0b I am 14 and I totally agree with you. I think people don't find being grown up fun, it's the actual growing up they love. I want to be 16 forever.
@JiffyNo0b I'm sorry to inform you that getting old happens in nature to all animals, including humans, and science doesn't have a solution for that yet. Your body will get old and you have to prepare your mind for that shit. Face the reality or else you'll be like peter fucking pan in a goddamn ozzy osbourne body. Getting old has nothing to do with freedom, you fucking asshole. Stop writing bullshit comments in youtube.
@N73B60 Are you serious? Age has quite a lot to do with freedom. Take a look between the lines. In this day & age, growing old is damn near equal to losing credibility in nearly all aspects of life. An elderly person could be assaulted on the street, go to the police to complain and they're shrugged off as crazy or unimportant. you can't possibly believe age has nothing to do with freedom. If you're a senior citizen and you don't live how the government wants you to live, you're out of luck.
@Sonnyxleet If aging and freedom are connected, then I can say an elderly person has time to travel and enjoy life. We, young people, have to wake up every fucking day and go to work, enslaved by the time and a boss. This is why I think aging has nothing to do with freedom, because you gain and you loose. Freedom works in a more personal level. Some people can have more freedom than others with the same age, it all depends on your mind and attitude. Linking freedom to aging is teenage bullshit!
@N73B60 I don't think you understand the meaning of Jiffy's comment. Also, I'm not saying that our elders aren't free, I'm merely confirming that age has a lot to do with freedom.
god man!!! im sick of all fucking comments positive or negative!!! im just sick of them at first they were funny now thy're just a pain to look at......it's like when your full and you can't see food anymore because you'll feel like trhowing up...well thats how i feel!! i don't care about your better years, or if justin beiber sucks just enjoy the fucking video god dammit!!!!

@sidvick12 why dont u take ur own advice and just enjoy the fucking video, ur adding to your own problem there idiot. who gives a shit if someone wants to reminisce about the good old days. if u dont like it dont look at the comments.
pretty much hahaha at least this is a TRUE band and not a corporation recycling a single motif of getting drunk or never growing up (KESHA AND JUSTIN W.E). This band is great...and music video is great....last of the counterculture....transcended from their parents.....through genealogy and ideals. I am one of these kids in the video....was lucky enough to not get left behind :)
Among the best rock songs ever. I like Zeppelin, I like Hendrix, blah blah blah. But when it really comes down to it, I'm not sure it gets any better than this. I miss the 90s. I'm thirty-two and I already feel old, guess that was bound to happen.
In the 90's MTV actually played music videos and I mean actually good music videos! Now MTV tells us go to a web site to watch music videos and reality tv is only thing we can watch on MTV!!!!!!!!!! The 90's kicked ass and todays music channels suck!
awesome video...so thankful I grew up listening to this and the other bands of the time. Nineties were so magic...god I miss that time. Backpacking around Europe and getting lost ....before Facebook, GPS and high speed internet. You can't travel and really get lost anymore. Everyone knows every move you make these days. Africa is where it's at...don't tell anyone though.
Will someone please explain to me why their youth in the 80s and 90s was so much better than mine in the 00s and why this video can represent their era so well and not mine?
@jakeequalsawsomeness jake i was basically the last generation before what you can call the "technological crisis", grew up in the 90s and i noticed that everything changed very suddenly around 97-99. everything started to feel more fake and let's face it music was never the same after that (never as good). arts and entertainment unfortunately after that point in time it seems began to function more as mathematical models to maximize profit instead of as an outlet for true artists like the SP.
when broadband internet started to become widespread at just about that same time, from my eyes, the whole world began to lose the feeling of originality and "realness". now everything feels mass produced and cookie cutter. you can't get away from it. everyone shares the same exact knowledge and its kind of a mess. im really sorry that you and your generation will never know how free one felt back then.
This is my all-time favorite music video. It takes place in 1979 but could just as easily represent my own youth in the 90's. Some experiences and feelings are timeless.
Its a damn shame these guys had to split up because kids back then were having their brains sucked out by crap like Britney Spears, Backstreet boys, and Aaron carter. Its great to see that they got back together.
im 13 and no1 in my school listens 2 this beast music like only a couple people do this was when they had good music like i bring my gutair 2 a party and i have 2 leave cuz no1 there listens they listen 2 that gay pop shit
@dchris12345 Don't worry, you're just ahead of them :) When you get a few years older and other people grow, you'll probably find some friends with the same music taste. The same happened to me - I was 13 and no one really liked rock music. Now I'm 16 and most of my friends like rock :)
I remember being young... no worries whatsoever... wishing i was grown... now i wish i was young again... Im only 24 but old enough to go to jail and pay bills!!! Lol!!!
oh my god, believe me,i was looking for this track since maybe two years !!!!! i wasn't sure about the group name, and then, all of a sudden,i was having a shower today, and then i found it : Smashing Pumpkins. It just came like that, with no reason...sometimes life's cool,i still have a good memory hahaha
I like it...I like it a lot! You know what this song really means. Find out at the blog SongSense.info. They've got all the details. Seriously, all the stuff they tell you there is incredible.

when broadband internet started to become widespread at just about that same time, from my eyes, the whole world began to lose the feeling of originality and "realness". now everything feels mass produced and cookie cutter. you can't get away from it. everyone shares the same exact knowledge and its kind of a mess. im really sorry that you and your generation will never know how free one felt back then.

@dchris12345 Don't worry, you're just ahead of them :) When you get a few years older and other people grow, you'll probably find some friends with the same music taste. The same happened to me - I was 13 and no one really liked rock music. Now I'm 16 and most of my friends like rock :)

Born too damn late. I hate being 12 in a world run by pop music and rap. It's depressing, because Smashing Pumpkins is my favorite band.
