  • What frogs are safe to eat and what part of the frog is safe to eat? Any info would be greatly appreciated

  • waste all the juice(nutrition)

  • I've got the same mess kit by light my fire

  • I can't imagine that would be enough calories to keep someone going as a day to day type of eating. I mean, it's great as to illustrate what you can do if you can catch a frog but naught else at the time if you're prepared but I'm just saying that maybe you should prefix your videos like this by saying that this isn't at all a healthy or nutritious enough meal, especially for someone out in the wilderness.

  • IMHO I'd be leaving that liquid in there and have some rice and frog leg soup.

Soup .... it does a body good.

  • Also breaking the bones before cooking will up the nutritional value. .

  • Boiling the bones after eating will give you a broth which is packed with energy. Add a T-bag and some pine needles will really give it some punch...

  • spork

  • was Part 1 taken down?

  • Dumb, the inside of the bones are good in calcium, I would fucking eat them too.

  • Look better than most chinese restaurant in Montreal

  • Quick Question umm where did u get the squishy bowl im preparing a survival kit and id like some food items and things if u can answer i will just email :D

    Thanks Dave

  • If that is an aluminum can, putting it in a fire and cooking with it is probably a very bad idea. I mean, I might do it in a sit-ti-ation, but I wouldn't get it all burned up in the fire. I have heard that in some studies, aluminum, just from people's use of aluminum foil and deodorant, is linked to Alzheimers. Plus, I think they line those cans with different kinds of plastic liners and that's not good for you either. Just saying. It'd be smarter to bring a steel or iron pot.

  • @HollywoodCreeper Well, studies are saying there are link to marijuana use and Alzhiemers, but no one's going to be stopping that anytime soon.

If you are cooking frog legs over a camp fire in a forest I'm guessing Alzhiemers is fairly low on your list of concerns.

  • @HollywoodCreeper "soup can" - I'm guessing steel can from some Beef Stew he had earlier.

  • was it just me or did you say those legs are a day old ?!

  • My aunt Mary MAKES

  • You know this tastes alot better with Cajun seasoning some crawfish....... Just like my aunt

  • Oh My Frenchness ! Only 2 legs and you call it a feast ? haha ;)

One question though, it's always good to have water around to quickly put out the fire when needed but in this case wouldn't it be even better to collect the cooking water ? It would make a fine broth to warm you up in cold weather and help with your hydration too.

  • @lauig He said this in the video. If you were listening, you would have heard him say you should take it with you, but he wanted to just show the food.

  • why wouldn't you use a metal mess kit?

  • Which video shows frog gigging?

  • Maybe I have a gross misunderstanding about long-term survival using 'pathfinder' procedures, but I don't believe I am seeing the sanitation necessary to prevent getting sick with the use of the rag for everything and the existence of plastic baggies. I also question the heavy use of so much plastic and polymer around really hot fluids, but that's more of a life-long issue.

  • Are the legs the only edible part of the frog?

  • @rjstasio you can eat their backs too, one back has about as much meat as one leg so you would get "roughly" 3 legs per frog! Good question by the way, also the backs IMO are softer and less "gamey" tasting

  • Boys this show fucking rocks I'm going to make some frog legs gumbo u should try it with hot sauce

  • @murleman would you happen to be from Louisiana?

  • hmmmm "frog gumbo"

  • 6:07 " you can see we got a real good rolling boil righHTT NAHHOW " ........ hahahaha amazing

  • what happened to part 1 when u were making the spear?

  • gumbo ah la squishy bowl!...lol

can anyone tell me what multi-tool is that?

  • hmmm Tastes like chicken!

  • "Boys... i'll tell you what...... you dont know what you're missing" YEAAH!!! that actually looked really good.

  • nice job,

but did you bring anything to sweeten that tea?

also, where can I get that squishy bowl, that thing is pretty slick!

  • hey dave want a hard working aussie willing to learn and very keen to live your life style on your team bro. lol srsly mate you have the best job in the world.

  • Gumbo!!!!

  • hay dave try some cavender's seasoning you can by it at wall mart it good

  • @obpkplayer1 cadavers is not good its full of msg. a potent excitotoxin.

  • @AmericaEnslaved187 - essentially all the commercial chicken boullion is leaded with MSG (excitotoxin/ nuerotoxin), not to mention GMO corn starch and other things that at least some folks who are interested in living 'with' the land would rather not have in their bodies.

  • y not keep the excess frog legs as trapping bait?

  • I have never had frogs what kind are safe/ good to eat. I mostly have wood frogs and leopard frogs and a few bull frogs in my area.

  • @defiythelie bull frog is good and leopard is good ...no bright colored or tree frogs...for the most part all the small ones ....dont eat ...pretty much the smaller or brighter they are the worse they are......any as big as your hand or bigger ...EAT for sure...

  • You can't beat a cup tea in the woods! Great stuff keep up the good work

  • i would carry salt sugar and pepper in my ruck or back pack for extra flavor

  • "so i've come here to give you a hand, and lead you into the promise land" great song, and thats coming from a younger man, so, there is hope for the future, Lol J/k

  • dude I think that in a survival situation throwing the liquid nurishment is a waste of potential fuel...........

  • @teyacapan thats what he said

  • @bushcraftourway uupsss!

  • Hey can you post your recipe as I was working while I had this in the background.

    Cheers

  • uhm, u guys are really radical and stuff.. I love it. But I dont understand why you are camping and doing stuff near a highway where you can hear cars. I would have wanted to get as far as possible away from cars and noise...

  • You have cool vids dude. When western society melts down (and it will one day) your advice will be much appreciated. Thanks

  • and are those american bull frog legs and nice video man! the reason y i wanted know if those were american bull frog legs was that i wanted to catch and eat my own if you could answer my questions itll be a great help thank you

  • hey could you please tell me where you get that flint to start your fire. ?

  • this nigga darty

  • Thanks again for a great video Dave (and Lance). I'm jobless and homeless and have been surviving anyway thanks to some of your great instruction. Keep it up!

  • @wanderingtramp just making a trip to the public library every so often to update your youtube account?

  • You guessed it. I also use the library to wash up and refill water jugs. Why? You doing the same?

  • yummmy!

  • this video would sound better if you didnt

    sound like a damn psyco

  • Wilderness survival videos tend to be much more authentic if you don't have the sounds of a highway in the background.

  • I have some concerns when it comes to bacterial contamination using your method.

    1. You cut raw meat on that strainer and then used it at the end to drain your food. This is a perfect way to contaminate your food with any germs that were in that meat.

    2. You used your bandanna as a towel, which in a survival situation is not the best thing to have contaminated as it will likely see much use.

Raw meats should be processed away from any eating tools. Alcohol wipes/sanitizer would be ideal.

  • @jfhalshsfdalkj I think you are being just a little bit picky. Thorough cooking will kill bacteria. Also, I'd wager that you aren't gonna have any fancy alcohol wipes in a true survival situation. Try going out and actually getting dirty sometime.

  • It is easily believable that your emergency survival kit could contain alcohol wipes or hand sanitizer.

I think you underestimate the dangers of food-poisoning in a survival situation.. Just from a "morale" point of view it would lower your spirits. Your needs for water would drastically increase (and if you had no way to purify water you can get sick-er from drinking contaminated water).

Now tired, dehydrated, and upset your chances for survival have gone way down.

  • @jfhalshsfdalkj I get your point. BUT....Do you carry your emergency survival kit EVERYWHERE with you? If not you are SOL. What happens if you end up in a survival situation for an extended amount of time and you run out of your creature comforts? ie-alcohol wipes. I actually don't underestimate poisoning or parasite dangers. I've had Giardia, and would sooner stab red hot pokers in my eyes than aquire that nasty parasite again.

  • @jfhalshsfdalkj As for purifying water I have a simple solution. It is easy to ALWAYS carry on your beltloop or keychain a magnesium block with attached flint. A simple pocket knife completes the equation needed for fire. ALWAYS boil water. I am not aware of any organism that can survive water being boiled. If you know of one, please educate me. I've come to learn that you never know EVERYTHING.

  • All of this is in response to a video try to teach survival equipment, so yes.. in that situation where he had that gear he could easily stock some hand sanitizer.

boiling water does kill germs. My point was that if sick, your water need would increase and this is not a good thing to have to gather wood, make a fire, boil for ~10 minute, and wait to cool (especially if you have many 'calls of nature' due to illness) your ability to make clean water would not keep up with your needs.

  • In the end survival is about making smart decisions, and taking easy steps to prevent illness is about the smartest thing you can do in a survival situation.

If you want to argue that then go ahead, I am done with this thread.

  • @jfhalshsfdalkj

    The bandanna got pretty dirty.

Having severe diarrhea or dysentery in a survival situation = low mobility, morale, hydration, appetite and dependency = lower survival.

  • Great vid.and i would def eat that frog gumbo !

  • In another video, that squishy bowl you made a berry flavored pancake in and you said it could handle 450 degrees in this one you said 800. Which one is accurate?? Thanks (great videos by the way)

  • @Tca2469 450

  • great, simple vid thats full of facts and it seems not to be out out by a hippy, good stuff

  • Could use the parts ya don't eat for some real good coon bait

  • Did you use regular bottled water or the water from the pond that you were frogging from?

  • Awesome meal. My fear of eating frog in the wild is over!!

    Ya-HOOOOOOO

  • frog legs taste so much BETTER outdoors. way to go, man!!!!

  • you are funny! out a massive frog, you only manage to eat those tinny legs... what a survival feat!

  • do you use sugar in your tea?

  • You should never use aluminum cans for cooking when avoidable. Some of the metal will break down into the sustenance and becomes a toxin which causes, among other things, Alzheimer's disease.

  • @simpleman2423 it hasn't been proven. correlation does not imply cause and effect.

  • @MrVoiceofreason123 if you have not realized it yet that is his back yard. I use to be on 5 acres in MO and had dear turkeys etc... running around all the time. Now unfortunately the Sierras or Great Basin are 20 minutes from my house.

    Cheers

  • the frog leg bones, instead of tossing away, could a person keep them bones and make like needles out of them for repairs or another type of tools?

  • Not sure if frog leg bones are strong enough for needles.

  • Wouldnt boiling soften the bone up?

  • 3 cheers for frog leg gumbo!!!

  • I think it's worth pointing out for a second time that you NEVER want to throw away good broth like that in survival situations. The starch and fat content are second to none and you won't find much else to substitute for it in the field unless you pack like foods.

Second: The bone from the legs are full of Marrow, and if you are still hungry or looking for more nutrients you would be wise to suck the marrow out! BUT DON'T EAT THE BONE!

  • My goodness. That wouldn't even be a snack for my son. He would eat that and then ask, "Where's dinner?"

  • Hey Dave. Great vid. Cutlery Lover sent me. I bet you are proud of that boy. I'm proud he's an American. We could use more like him. Keep up the great vids. I'm shopping for a gig tomorrow. Think I'll throw mine in some ramen noodles with some red pepper. Thanks for the vid. And thank your son for his service to our country, for me please. 5 starz and a subscription.

  • i almost died from one

  • Yeah those opossums and racoons are pretty viscous and attack humans every day!

  • lol

  • lol!

  • this

  • Yeah! they wait till your asleep then they attack .

  • @wildernessoutfitters heeheeehee Camping humor rocks.

  • heeehee Camping humor rocks.

  • he's not exactly in bear country retard..... keep it up dave, I've learned alot from ur vids

  • that looked damn good

  • Your the man!!!

  • I like the comment at the end "you don't know what you are missin" Can't wait to try this!

  • Great tip! Probably tastes just like chicken and rice...

  • u can cook food or boil water in an old can

  • great ideas, dave, thanks for the inspiration mate

  • anyone know if you can eat toadlegs??mainly in florida ?

  • why do i think of halo 3 when he sayd "teabag"?...LOL

  • Those legs were sitting for a day or so?You're a tougher man than me, Dave.

  • everything tastes better when you're camping, good video Dave!!

  • Yeah it is Great but the Highway is about 1/2 mile away! Sorry we couldnt drop into the Oxbow for ya to shoot a 10 min vid buddy!

  • @wildernessoutfitters Yeah road traffic carries a long way through the woods. I hunt about a mile from the highway and still hear traffic. Oh by the way, they look more like Betty Grable legs. LOL

  • The squishy cup is not plastic so you should not have to worry about BPA> I believe it's made of a new silicone product that's made for cooking on. Great vid Dave. Welcome home Lance

  • Great vids. You should make sum more sleeping in shelter vids. Like the one when your in the snow. Thanks 4 making these wonderful vids!!

  • where'd you get your haversack?

  • this making me hungry, that actually looks pretty apetizing!

  • The plastic lining in cans contains BPA a know carcinogen, look it up.

  • Yeah..avoid plastic.

  • Does that chicken and rice ever go bad??? sorry if this is a stupid question but im still learning...

  • not really...

  • Smokey the bear says pour water on the fire and stir it with a stick until it stops smoking.

As for the products shown, they look junky and too big. If you can't do it with a canteen cup and an MRE bag you might as well have used your kitchen since all this food came from there anyway.

  • Yeah cause MRE's aren't cooked in a kitchen before packaging are they? And Uncle Sam never issued you a Meal Kit did He?

  • Actually I only carry this Kit if I am going on a Long Trek and want some conveniences and if you pack it with spices and Bagged items it does not rattle. But it is not a good piece of short term kit.

  • Agreed, as long as you don't leave out something you'll wish you had later. And since you mentioned stuffing it with food items I can't poke a hole in that either. :)

  • great videos I watched most of them... best survival tips

  • how can the squishy bowl handle 700+ fahrenheit?

  • A comon halloween tradition up in Michigan is to have a bonfire cookout. Of course apple cider is manditory but it comes in a plastic milk jug. What we did was loosen the cap to let off pressure and put the jug on the hot coals. Make sure that fire doesn't come near the top bits. The liquid inside the jug will keep the thin plastic cool enough that it won't melt thru.

Same thing here probably. Probably some fine print on the package.

In another video he stated max temp was 450 degrees.

  • Silicone! It's INCREDIBLY heat resistant.

  • nice great vid thanx

  • I like all of your meat sources however, and this is just my opinion, i think that turtle is a good source of meat. They are easy to catch when out of water and not to hard to clean with a sharp knife but anyways what is your opinion on them as a food source?

  • what kind of turtles do you usually eat?

  • why are u guys all sayin mm lol its a frog that should be last priority

  • dude frogs taste the best.

  • how many acers do yo have

  • that shit looks good

  • Im so hungry now lol

  • These videos are so awesome. Thanks!

  • there is an easier way to prepare the frog. cut him from the hips. cut the feet off and poke finger though the crotch and pull the skin off. comes off like a wet suit. lol

  • Woot. Edgar Winter! And Earl Gray tea!(?)

    Awesome vid!

  • sweet. where did you get your water bootle / santoprene bowls? they are awsome

  • great video!

but what do you do with the rest of the frog? can you just boil the legs and eat them like that? i know it would be bland but would it work if you didnt have that other stuff to put in? maybe just a little salt? can you roast the legs over the fire on a stick? just curious. nice fire making skills =)

  • you could use the rest of the frog to bait traps or use on a trout line

  • Mmmmm!...

  • He could of drank the water he poured out lol!!!

  • Could you please do a video on your wilderness edc? Like what you just carry on you with no pack??

  • have you seen this one?

    watch: ?v=ZAdaOOudUow

  • what is that you start the fire with?

  • magnesium match block

  • I love your vids, so please do not take this the wrong way; I have eaten frogs legs on a number of occasions and just really dislike them! I appreciate it is a plentiful, available source of protein that can be harvested with a minimum of calories of energy expended, which is why I am asking is there anyway other than caking them in tobasco and grilling them over embers (excluding your gumbo method) which you would recommend? I understand that if you are hungry enough, you will eat it too! lol

  • I have never been great fan of frog legs, BUT my friends took me to a Chinese Buffet 2 weeks back and I was surprised to see jumbo frog legs in a mild asian sauce. They were very much like a teriyaki sauteed chicken wings. You might want to try that, or put eggs and bread crumbs on them and fry them up.

    Bon appetit !!!

  • Comment removed

  • Couldn't you eat the bones as well by sucking the marrow out?

  • Great video top ratings !

  • Search youtube for "Frog Prep" to watch a live frog being summarily executed to make this dish. :-)))

  • these videos are great. so helpful. subscribed!

  • Not to be a wise guy but I also think the can is a bad idea. There's a plastic lining that actually leeches into canned food. I don't buy my chick peas or beans in cans, in fact no cans. I use dried beans etc... Look it up! I have a Swiss army canteen it holds 900 ml. I think, and nests in a stainless cup you can cook in

  • lol, dont lick their backs either!

  • Cool

  • hey cool vid mind sending me the links to buy the cooking kit and all that?thanks.

  • im thinkin about doing that but im afraid that the tin can is poisonous so my dad said but do u kno iff it is poisonous

  • Aluminum cans, not tin.

  • loool wrong kinda frog buddy, stay away from those bright coloured ones

  • looks good

  • wat other parts are a good eat? i know you can eat all of it. any other major muscle tissue we can butcher from them?

  • You will probably expend more calories picking at the rest of the frog than you would get from the little amount of meat. If times are desperate, you could just remove the intestines (bad flavor) and make a stock/broth out of the rest of the frog. I have never personally done it before, but it seems to work for chicken and turkey. Salt and pepper packets from your local take out place would probably come in handy to improve flavor.

  • well i live in england but i dont think we have any poisonus ones

  • can you eat any type of frogs legs?

  • No, Pickerell Frog here in Canada can be harmful. And of course, any toxic frog can be very bad for you. Leopard frogs and bullfrogs will feed you fine, but make sure it's a leopard or bullfrog.. had a few folks confuse a pickerell frog, for a leopard frog.

  • where did u by that water bottle its thin and i can only get the 32 oz nalgines

  • looks good know I am hungry
