hi Matt, one of the best blues-videos on YT ! such a great tone ! raw & vital ! cut down to the essential notes in your own style !!! thank you for that ! LES greets from berlin/germany
i love your demos/reviews. i have a les paul with a SD JB in the bridge. I have a duncan custom (sh-5) and a 498t to choose from to replace. could you please give me your thoughts and opinions on the differences? thanks
@coolcustomer31 Depends what music you play and is it a Gibson LP ? - I personally think the 498t can sound a bit too inoffensive. The SH5 in a Gibson LP can be quite bright but gives a more focused mid range for high gain metal soloing. The JB will be best for classic rock and blues - plenty of grunt but more vintage/classic sounding - you either love the JB in a LP or hate it. If you play country then put the 498t in !!
Amplifier might affect more on the sound than the pickups. You should probably check out what they've used and see if you can get to similar gears. Especially if you have a solid state amp,you should consider more buying a new amplifier than new pickups. For example,Line6 Spiders pretty much eat the special tone from pickups.
I love the 490/498 combo in my 2001 Standard. Great sounds individually and together (especially when overdriven!). I may try a set of '57 classics someday, but no hurry here.
I really dig 490 and 498 alnico pickup sound! Now with 500k pots they have nice round and full body AND highs too, that they lacked a bit with original 300k pots. Nice, really nice! I totally do not understand why majority are changing them.
The 490R/498T are actually very good pickups. Everybody seemed to get hung up on so called vintage authenticity. The vintage models like the Burstbuckers and 57 classics to me don't have enough grunt. The 498T is actually slightly more powerful in DC resistence than the DiMarzio. The DiM has ceramic magnet which makes it that bit louder than the 498T. The 498T does not have the low to mids of the DiMarzio.
Great video!
I´m thinking to swap the stock pots in my 94´ LP for 500K pots. Are you try with 500K both volume & tone?

These pickups sound better than on a Les Paul than a SG. Your thoughts ?
Verboten1965 1 year ago
@Verboten1965 - Not sure as I haven't really played SG's - I thought that the SG had 490R + 490T rather than 490R + 498T as we have here ?
Mattukgtr 1 year ago
@Mattukgtr the sg special is 490R and 490T, but the sg standard is 490R and 498T.
