Vauxhall used to build good cars , why have they lost the plot?,and why did they end up making the horrible Vectra which probably contributed to the closure of the Luton factory.
-I agree,i know the Vectra and i don't like it,here in the US they made amends launching the Cobalt, but some people consider inferior to some Cavalier versions although overall finish looks better,i believe that if GM put more attention in the car could be a winner, well it's 10 times better than Focus
@peter455sd Did GM Europe export the cavalier to the USA or was it built there? I can't understand why GM and Fraud, sorry Ford are not just tooling up their US factories to build the European market cars for American customers - you'd be able to get much better MPG from them. Why is it that an American company who can design a 2.0l 4-pot for Europe that develops similar power to a 5.0l V8 they sell in the US - not just use the 2.0l 4 cyl in their US spec cars?
This is a really cool advert. I liked it when they discused how the new car can be better, show design drawings of what the car should look like and even test driving it in secret, then revealing what the new car is when they take the covers off. MKII CAVALIER RULES!!!
The Cavalier built up a fantastic name for itself. At the point when it was replaced by the Vectra, it was outselling its biggest rival (Mondeo). Since the Vectra, its all been downhill. Vauxhall seriously need to consider bringing the Cavalier name back to regain the strength.
An irony between this and the Sierra - Vauxhall Cavalier had conservative styling but with front-wheel-drive (Part of the worldwide J-car program with every GM division - including CADILLAC - participated in) while the Ford Sierra had radical jelly mould styling for the time - but with rear-wheel-drive!
I had one of the last MK2's, a 1988 SRi 2.0, What a car, fast, economical, brilliant to drive, sadly though, they didn't pay so much attention to corrosion protection! Have another in a flash, as long as it was rust free!
And now I do! I bought a 1984 1.6L with 30,000 genuine miles in need of bodywork TLC, so I'm sorted for something to do over the winter ahead! Sometimes the memory overcompensates for the past, not in this case, drives as brilliantly as I remember them!
in -79 vauxhall/opel came out with the 1.3s OHC engine and it delivered 75bhp!!
I had one in my Corsa MK1, pretty fast and very economical to drive.
Save Opel/Vauxhall!!

I hate vauxhalls but I have a soft spot for the Mk2 cav - esp the CDI models - 90bhp is pretty good for 1981!
morgrp 4 years ago
90bhp from a 1.6 was almost unheard of back then hehe, totally agree.

The Mark 2 Cavalier really was/is a quite remarkable car.

Actually even today, 90bhp isn't bad for a 1.6-many 16v injected 1.6 engines have little, if any more.
GM did some wicked engines in the 1980s, then round about 1992 it all started to go very pear-shaped.

The 1.6 diesel engine from GM was rubbish however.

it was those damn catalytic convertors that messed it all up
