  • It is clear that one needs to be properly trained for a probably lengthy dedicated duration before attempting to be able to use these techniques. This is why Aikido and Japanese Jujitsu students deserve admiration and respect that they receive for their longstanding efforts and commitment to the arts.

  • the only good defense against edged weapons is DISTANCE.

The more distance the better. In fact, if the knife comes out, you are in the wrong spot.

  • THANK GOD an Aikido practicioner that recognises the knife disarms won't work, i train in Kali/silat & the amount of people who believe the gun/knife disarms of systems like Krav Maga, Aikido, Ju Jitsu is ridiculous.

Even Silat has them, i remember being shown how dangerous somebody intent on stabbing you with a knife was...completely blew my belief that disarms via grappling are possbile.

  • Is it something like KATA?

  • this is actually something I only learned in the last two weeks before my blackbelt test. This is why my profficiency kind of sucks. The techniques are only about two weeks old for me! My dojo doesn't focus on these moves at all, but they are part of the black belt syllabus of Nishio sensei, so they get included. I enjoyed learning them!

  • It's true that knife can be very dangerous, don't let this demo fool you into thinking that just because you practice some knife defense or you know aikido, it's a good idea to pursue physical defense unless you have no choice. If somebody knows how to use a knife properly, you are gonna get cut most likely whether you are police or an expert. Better to accept that fact and try to run if possible. And this is a test, you can tell by the guy wearing a white gi who is not advanced student.

  • yeah but what kinda twat trying to mug u is going to know how to use a knife properly

  • Its a demo also looks like a rank test. Tell the law enforcement and security guys in my dojo is doesnt work and they'll laugh in your face, while they bring you down to the mat. One night after class I wanted to try anything I against them. Shooting in didnt work, swinging didnt work, kicking really didnt work. Actually to come to think about not much worked

  • lovely training hall

  • It is good but a knife is a dangerour weapon, there are many fatal cut areas throughout the body, the human body can be cut like a chunk of beef by a butcher, it doesn't take much pressure to slice up beef just like the human body so it is not wise to automatically to do hand to hand combat with the knife wielder.

  • Actually Aikido is a good knife defense style, I would recommend taking multiple styles that deal with stuff like this. Though what a lot of people are saying about running is the absolute best thing to do if someone pulls a knife on you. The moves shown in this video are simple basic knife defense moves, Aikido has more advanced moves than those shown here.

  • I recommend you all watch the video "Knife Defence" posted by awantex. That´s the real method about defence against a knife attack. There is no method. If somebody pulls out a knife on you, RUN.

  • Well this is my saying, "When there's a knife run! Unless you got a gun." And have good aim of course. LOLZ

  • If you want to learn how to defend yourself against a knifeman just visit your local track and field club and ask to speak to the 'sprinting' coach. If you attempt to defend like these guys, you'll get killed.

  • does aikido really work? it looks GREAT, ok..but see..all the performances seem as if they are carefully coreographed and rehearsed, its all a fluid motion, nobody is resisting, the attacker is going along with the defender...i dont know, I want to learn how to do this, but idk if I should...suggestions?

  • This isn't a demo, its a test to show you know the moves in principal. Resistance is a problem for aikido, that is why real aikido is usually accompanied by a strong punch to the face. This style of aikido I call family style. They teach you the basics in a friendly safe way. My current class is what I call punch aikido. You always have to deliver a counter blow before applying techniques.

  • @bondrew007 Aikido can work but I wouldn't use it in a system as isolation, it needs to be supported by striking and grappling skills the same as any other art. There are choreographed and rehearsed learning techniques but equally there is free play, randori etc to actually test the skills. I used to work on the doors and as a security officer and the Aikido served me well. But I do Krav Maga now and it's nice to train in opposites to get the full spectrum.

  • I am not speaking ill of your Akido, but if you dont really believe that it works then why do you study it? Again I am simply asking, not degrading.

  • Actually it works better than I ever could have imagined. Lately I'm doing a lot of kick boxing. Sometimes though I'm wearing gloves the other guys try to take me down. Even with gloved arms I'm quickly able to apply arm locks that make them break the head lock they have or if they pull me down I make them come down with me.

  • In short studying aikido has given me a basis to be a better martial artist. I'd recommend it to anyone. Though I know that I still have a long way to go.

  • To the "bullshit" comment. I would disagree. This is a real style of knife attack, and this is a possible defense to the attack. However it is choreographed, and no one is trying to resist. I believe this is a valuable training method.

  • First practice aikido. Then speak about it.

  • Sounds interesting. I've heard of Tomiki Aikido, which is something like that. Attacks are more real, and that kind of think is practiced more seriously. Wish I had more time.

  • Slow attack - an OK demo of static techniques. Visit a Yoshinkan club to gain experience of dynamic and committed tanto attack and defence in 'jiyuwaza' freestyle.

  • If a knive attacker attacks like a moron like this, then you don't need Aikido to defend against it...

  • In Japanese akikai these moves are not really taught. They are a formality for the test. They are taught at the last minute and just taught because they are on the curriculum. Why doesn't knife defence work ? Well it could, but then again it might not. You can't take the risk. If I was really defending a knife I would grap a chair or something to keep some distance between us.

  • This is the most conscious response I ever read about defending against knife attacks. Period.

  • And why don't you believe that "knife defense works"?

  • yeh there are two types of aikido. excellent aikido and shit aikido. This one completely belongs to the latter.

  • hi friend. you must improve strongly your aikido, but you should remenber that when you reach black belt, your trip in aikido has just began!!. good luck!!! sorry about my english

  • It's true, it should be a lot more fluent, but unfortunatly I wasn't given any time in lessons to practice by my german sensei, who thinks that you should only get Shodan after 5years minimum.

In Japan shodan is the beginning of aikido, you've learned the basic moves thats it. So I just had to learn those moves from another student and practice them a few times before the test. Give me a couple of years (or more)to get to a European shodan standard...

  • this is shit aikido. how did they get their shodan?
