Was listening to this album in my car the day I kissed my wife for the first time. It is Our album. The testimony of our timeless love, as the album itself is timeless.
Thanks so much for posting this.. I was a massive fan in the 80's, 90''s but am sorry to say that to my own detrament lost touch with DS after Brilliant Trees. This track alone has re-ignited my passion for DS voice and amazingly raw lyrics. In the past few days I have purchased a large amount of back catalogue.. DS is back in my life!!!
Beautiful. This album and "Gone to Earth" are to my mind his best work. His progression into a more rarefied avant garde is interesting but at that moment in his life his ability to pool musical talent around him, and his own songwriting craft, peaked to produce earthy, organic, melancholy masterpieces.
David Sylvian is the real life Orpheus. He makes divine, mesmerising music and is as beautiful as Apollo (Orpheus's father). An Orpheus with a happy ending!
i walked into a record store many moons ago and asked the guy who was serving me could i order a copy of 'Dead bees on a Cake' by Mr DS, he said to me that ' Secrets of the Beehive' was his favourite album of all time and that 'Orpheus' was a timeless classic.... He was 17! It brought me great pleasure listening to his passion at the time and totally re-invigorated my belief in all things Sylvian.
After 20-years of being a Sylvian fan, I finally had the pleasure of seeing him live a few years ago at the Fillmore in San Francisco. Absolutely staggering. So tight and perfect, it was like being in recording studio.
Secrets of the beehive is one of his best albums!! I Played this album over and over again in the eighties, ninethies...and the album is now on my ipod!
Such a beautiful video. Thanks. You Tube just recommended it for me. I thought I had already faved it. Can't believe it's nearly twenty years old or so. Hope you are having a good week, MoodyB. - Erika in SF
Though I was familiar (somewhat) with Japan, and a few of David's solo songs, I'm most familiar with a collaboration he did with David Byrne called "Gone To Earth". I'm hoping to find some here on YT. I will certainly have to do some exploring of Sylvian's music. I know he has worked with Fripp quite a bit. Great singer!
Gone To Earth is very very good and maybe the best of his work, but it's difficult to compare one album to the next. That would be like trying to say which bottle of Château Lafite Rothschild wine tastes better than the other. If you like Gone To Earth then Secrets of the Beehive is probably the closest in style. Pick that one up next. Also, btw, Byrne didn't collaborate on Gone To Earth. It was primarily Robert Fripp of King Crimson fame who co-wrote several tracks.
This whole CD is one of the most under-appreciated CDs of all time. It's amazing. For some reason it always makes me think of Neil Gaiman's Sandman graphic novels (well, maybe because of "Orpheus" but the whole CD takes me there). I wore out a tape and had to get a new copy.
love the album, the imagery is absolutely stunning - visualized...or not. I have "traveled" many times through this whole album - i recently started playing this particular song on my electro-acoustic...it's so amazing to sing!!!
I can't believe this is 22 years old... beautiful, timeless, poetic track. Highly recommend the album this is taken from "Secrets of the Beehive" which imo is his most complete album; every track an absolute gem with no fillers.
i just found this on another website, "Orpheus was the mythical king of Thrace, and the son of Apollo. It was his lineage, being the son of the Greek god of music, which graced him with an undeniable and intoxicating talent for song. He played the lyre effortlessly, and he sang with a voice so sweet that he literally soothed savage beasts, and even caused the trees to sway toward him in order to listen to his melodies." thats cool!
I used to love Japan back in the early 80's and then when the band split never followed Sylvian. Through the marvels of youtube I'm now getting into his independant work and absolutely love this beautiful song.
hello debmy01, ive loved japan + sylvian's music for years, i strongly recomend that you get the 1st solo album by sylvian, called "brilliant trees", its excellent and quite accesible, it gets more and more mellow with each track, good after a busy day, it starts with quite a funky track, and has sylvian's brother on drums, and excellent session musicians, all the best!
Beautiful song. So evocative. The opening reminds me of the beginning of Tori Amos' "Bells for Her" (from the live side of her album "To Venus and Back"). I respect both artists immensely.
Una delle più belle canzoni mai scritte. In un album impareggiabile. Mi emoziono tutte le volte che la ascolto, con gli arrangiamenti di Sakamoto che completano il capolavoro. Mamma mia che emozione!
This song takes me back to a time when I was reexamining my life, taking stock and redirecting. At the time Sylvian's Orpheus didn't strike me as particularly meaningful but I now listen with much deeper appreciation. It paints the backdrop for a moment of change, good change.
His lyrics are Fine and...Touching....Like before said; ' There's a beauty here, I cannot deny' .....Listen to ' When Poets Dreamed Of Angels' ....Don't 2 say more.....
ha ha, oh really? fair enough...for me, Japan seems excting, vibrant, swinging as they say...but i suppose his solo material has more 'depth' and 'soul'
About his cat?? That's what they said about a Beatles song as well... one on the White Album, I think. Can't remember which one, though. I think it's probably not true, though. Nothing in this song's lyrics would suggest this could be about a cat!
Definately not. It is about the legend of Orpheus, who was a mystic and a seer, said to be the greatest musician and poet of Ancient Greece. It is said that his songs could charm wild beasts and coax rocks and trees into movement. Orpheus sailed together with other Greek adventurers on the Argo - the biggeest ship ever built then, in search of the Golden Fleece. And when the ship passed by the island of the Sirens, it was Orpheus' music which prevented the crew from being lured to destruction.
Pure poetry and beauty in its highest. What elegant, sophisticated music, which has aged impeccably. I discovered Sylvian in the 80s and was immediately smitten with his music. Rediscovering him now, I realise he's aged like a fine wine.
Che bello imbattermi in altri italiani che apprezzano Sylvian! Io l'ho scoperto alla fine degli anni 80. Incredibile come non sia datato affatto. la sua musica è senza tempo, come tutta la vera arte. Meravigliosa!
I count myself as truly blessed to have been witness to this tour in 1988, in Bremen West Germany.
The small staged was literally over flowing with musicians and instruments. The theatre had a huge circular skylight that slid open to reveal the stars in the deep royal blue that is the northern night sky, spangled with stars.
I've listened to countless songs in my life of all genres...and this is easily one of the most beautiful I've ever heard. The album it comes from, Secrets Of The Beehive, is also a masterpiece from start to finish.

Sleepers sleep as we row the boat,
Just you the weather and I gave up hope.
But all of the hurdles that fell in our laps
Were fuel for the fire and straw for our backs.
Still the voices have stories to tell,
Of the power struggles in heaven and hell,
But we feel secure against such mighty dreams,
As Orpheus sings of the promise tomorrow may bring.

Sylvian is the Milton of the 21st century. Loved him since the 1980s. Simply awesome.
