What Faanat quoted from Bakunin seems so right, that I am inclined to agree, but where do we leave the things we must teach our children? Do we teach them to destroy or to build? Do we teach them that the only hope there is is to start from scratch? Or do we tell them that we are here to learn?
"one exploiting sect, one people of leeches, one single devouring parasite closely and intimately bound together not only across national boundaries, but also across all divergences of political opinion[Jews have] that mercantile passion which constitutes one of the principal traits of their national character"
I don't disagree, however I do think people protect Jews a little too much.
Any 'race' of people who claim to have ANY divine right over another should be ridiculed, and rightlly so. No man, woman or child has anything other than their skin. Anything else, ridiculous. But yes, I agree calling them 'leeches' is pretty harsh. That is a gross generalization.
anyways, he wasn't the only anti-semite anarchist: proudhon said about jews:
"The Jew is the enemy of the human race. This race must be sent back to Asia, or exterminated. H. Heine, A. Weil, and others are simply secret spies. Rothschild, Crémieux, Marx, Fould, evil choleric, envious, bitter men etc., etc., who hate us."
That's a little harsh too. 99% of anarchists this day would probably thought it's a Hitler quote
I'd agree with that on one condition; the names other than Rothschild were removed. I can only dream of a world without powerful bankers centralizing power.
I'd have to say though, Bacunin's discourses of God and Liberty are priceless. Dark humor and a gentle hint of sarcasm never goes amiss.
@Vulturu Those trends were pretty in vogue at the time... that shouldn't serve as any kind of rationalization, just an explanation for why otherwise such freethinking and innovative men should adopt those views. In any case, this shouldn't inform our study of their theories in any way. We are not concerned with their character as men, just with their innovations as anarchist theorists, to the extent their anti-Semitism does not inform their Anarchism.
@nocturnezero so you don't deny like other anarchists that anti-semits and racist are great minds. anarchists became so egalitarian only after their alliance with commies against fascists...
@Vulturu I don't see any need to justify his racism or defend his character, nor did I ever say he was a great mind. I just value his anarchist theorizing and revolutionary action. If character flaws made a theory invalid, we'd have no established fields of study, because every great mind has had some embarrassing or deplorable secret. It's the same with religion - I disagree with a lot of tenets of Islam, but I'll still read, say, Malcolm X.
Bakunin wasnt a Nihilist and his scripts didnt form Nihilism. His scripts are AGAINST Nihilism, cause Nihilism is against political idiologies and Bakunin formed the anarchism, which is a political idiology.
"Nihilism" has taken on a few different meanings over the centuries. The modern interpretation of a person who believes in no values whatsoever certainly does not apply to Bakunin, but more restrictive definitions that are in not used as often today might apply.
He certainly wanted to annihilate the state, and for some that's enough to proclaim someone a nihilist.
@yioryoslouizos The Marxist axiom is "from each according to ability, to each according to need," which is very different from "to each according to achievement." In any case, I'm unsure who coined the phrase exactly. It's often attributed to Marx, but this could be wrong.
He wasnt a nihilhist..shit lol

Jews do have a mercantile compassion. What's anti-semetic about that?
Jews ARE inherently greedy. I know many. Hell these people think the WORLD is theirs, granted by God!

calling all jews "leeches" makes you pretty anti-semitic

Marx was raised Lutheran. I'd call him an anti-semite first and a Jew second.

@Vulturu probably Bakunin said that because it is true. Jews in general (not all) pursue money and power over more important matters.

He said some things that had a Nihilistic character, but every Leftist does at some point. He was no means a founder of Nihilism, anyway.
RedAthena1919 2 years ago
but then you could also say he was a Nihilist because anarchism is also a form of extreme anti-political ideology
nateseth1 2 years ago
he was not a nihilist! far from it!
roserh6 3 years ago 3
indeed, but his living and ideologies, like Nietzsche(whom himself wasn't a nihilist), incorporated the modern ideals on nihilism.
Like Palahniuk too, he's not a nihilist, but look at what he writes, which focuses a lot on cynic and nihilistic thinking.
