Too bad this doesn't work any more. Apple will let you buy the iPhone 3GS without creating an AT&T account. Apple allows existing AT&T iPhone account holders who are NOT eligible for an upgrade yet to purchase them "as a gift" for someone else without a new account creation. But the pricing goes WAY up to $600-$700 for the 3GS. If you have that kind of money to toss around you can just give someone with a "legal" the money and have them pay for it.
