Saw these guys so many times throughout the late 80s in NC and ATL...lucky to have have that opportunity. Too bad that they really never achieved the national attention that they should have. THESE GUYS WERE FANTASTIC SONGWRITERS AND PERFORMERS.
Estimated friend, if you want to listen again this song and an endless number of successes of the love I suggest you to visit Radio MUSICA PARA MIMOS - looks for his direction URL in Google ( search Musica para Mimos in Google)-. best romantic music of all the times in Internet, is great, is very good ...!!!
I remember reading a review once that compared the Connells to R.E.M. and The Smiths. Whoever wrote that, was definitely thinking of this song (and others) when they did so
My uncle introduced me to the Connells back in the '80s. He went to Duke, ca. '85. These guys are legends of southern alt-rock. How many years did they tour the college scene? True staying power, and a great catalog of albums. One of the innovators of jangle-pop. They're right up there with R.E.M. Guadalcanal Diary was great, too. This video for "Seven" is nostalgic, but still fresh and relevant. Thanks for posting.

One of their best tracks. Doug sounds very different compared to later records. The whole band sounded quite dark at this era, but especially Doug's voice changed quite a bit over the years. Interestingly both this vocal delivery and the later vocals are very good. Hope the early Connells records get re-released not only digitally but also in actual CD format.
Greetings from Europe. Hope to see these guys live some day. European fans await, hoping for a new European show...
Mid-80's era with The Smiths/Morrissey -like sound. The Richenbacher sings out like Johhny Marr's guitar playing. Hundley crooning like Morrisey, however, with lyrics that are not depressing. What a great band that never sold out like other groups from that era like REM. I saw them live in Asbury Park, NJ and the show was awesome. As others have commented, you just don't get modern day bands to actually sing and play like this band. Check out '74-'75 video - emotional impact of their music..
Funny how a person can forget how great a band is until they listen to them again. Unfortunately, their music was ruined in a house fire so I don't have any of it now. This is probably one of my favorite bands again. And I will never forget them again.
@vastjosie YES ! THE CONNELLS are so good ! ;D So , SHARE THEIR VIDEOS ON FACEBOOK and everywhere you can for your friends ! OK ? GOoooooooooo ! It's so easy to SHARE ! Many CONNELLS videos on Youtube ;O)
I saw these guys at the CLUB SODA in Kzoo in 86' on a random Monday and bought the album from their manager who was the only one there besides me and a date and about 5 other people.. I met them years later after a sold out show at the Blind Pig and they said the KZOO gig was a mistake...their gig in Ann Arbor was canceld and they were sleeping in their van cause had no money and the A2 police escorted them to the edge of town
I heard of them as far back as 1985 by a really cool DJ from Norfolk, Virginia for a radio station called FM 99 WNOR. Carol Taylor was great for introducing people like The Connells.
I wish there was a video for Darker Days on YouTube. Local college radio played the shit out of that song. Such a great band. If you're into 80s North Carolina check out the Comboland channel here on YouTube. That guy has dB's videos and other stuff up.
Great great song. I have to give my brother credit for turning me on to these guys. We used to be in competition to "discover" the greatest band no one had ever heard of. We saw them in Lawrence, KS in 90 or 91.
It really, really does. I'm just going through and listening to Connells songs I don't know (to see if they're all as good as 74-75), and I had this minimised, and I actually thought I had clicked on a Smiths song by mistake.
Yes, quite different from their last albums. I love the sounds of Darker days and Boylan Heights. Haunting vocals from Doug and powerful drumming from Pele.
Excellent CD, very different from the music they would produce going forward. Their masterpiece, Boylan Heights, would come out in '87 and the Connells unique sound would be established.

Darker Days is easily the best pop record released in the post-Beatles era.

Is the song related to an event in the singer's life? It seems to me that it could relate to a religious experience.
