he was on the "one show" in UK today, he was explaining about Gyrocopters. this crash obvioulsy didnt put him off his passion for the interesting aircraft
I have seen Mr wallis at waddington air show ,he also design a gyro for a bond film and yes like all of us he is old but is a 1st class pilot ,know matter what the sceptics say.
I saw him the other day, checking his map on the A14 near Ipswich. He was on his way to a show with Little Nelli. He told me that he does not fly her any more but has 40 more machines that he does!
Idiot reporter. Gyros land primarily at idle/engine out...the rear prop going out has nothing to do with it. Most likely, he cut it down or off anyway to land. Appears his rotor speed (overhead rotor) was low when he flayered for landing. That's the only problem I see. Improper flair. Glad he's ok.
@willisbr His motor froze..you can tell by the prop..it stopped spinning..he didn't have enough time to flair it out..too close to the ground..altitude if your friend in those situations.
@brofun It's an autorotating machine...the engine out has nothing to do with it. His flair did absolutely nothing which indicates to me that he could have been doing a maneuver down wind and too close to the ground. What I was getting at is the reporter is an idiot and misreporting. It leads viewers to believe that gyros are wildly out of control with the rear engine out. Which is rediculous if he had read up on the mechanics of gyros.
@teslaccy ...sigh... 'Deadly crash' doesn't necessarily mean anyone HAVE to die, it simply means somebody COULD have. Firearms are considered deadly but there are lots of people that have survived being shot. Read a F'n book.
--and as Wingless'Commander Wallis valiantly emerged from the twisted wreckage he was heard to exclaim as he was waving--- "Thank you, Thank you, -and now for my next act, you will see both i and Aero'commander BobHoover take-off totally 'dead-stick' in a 120mph gale"... [see: " Bob Hoover in his Aero Commander Shrike "]
That commentator I guess had to put some kind of stupid drama in the video. But...Ken was doing everything he could. He landed in soft turf with high grass...any of you would have flipped around as he did. You guys with the "should have....whould have.....could have" crap should just shut the fuck up as you would NEVER know how you would react in such a situation. Ken is the king of the pusher gyros.
I met Wing Commander Wallis this week. He is 94 now and still fly's his autogyro's. He is an amazing man who has led an amazing life and should, by rights have been knighted a long time ago. Shit, if they can give that twat Alan Suger a knighthood just for lining his own pocket why can't they do the same for a man who served his country faithfully and ha sdemonstrated British ingenuity all over the world.
The "trick" to an engine out desent in either a gyro or helicopter is to manage the energy of gravity and flare at the appropriate time. In the gyro you keep the rotor speed up and then flare at landing and your desent speed slows down and yes I have seen it done ,engine out many times. I think the pilot was aiming for a dramatic flyby and at the altitude which engine failure occured with the subsequent rotor speed he did the only thing he could and "rode" it in.
Gyrocopter pilots are as zealous as Mac Computer owners. They'll tell you that nothing can ever go wrong with them, and if something does go wrong it's no big deal . . when it actually is.
Oh, that's not a sweeping statement at all. Oh no. Nope.
Picking a mac over a PC is just a matter of personal preference. They aren't overzealous. Sure, some have penises the size of peanuts and therefore have the urge to constantly tell you that they're better than you in something, but not all of them. If they tell you that nothing can ever go wrong, it is probably them complimenting themselves on their piloting skills, for the ego massage. Things can go wrong all the same.
I met Ken Wallis two years ago and he showed me and my friends around his hanger, he has built 17 so far all with different engines, some twins and four
cylinders, flats and inline, he has many thousands of flights in his lifetime and flies once a week on a regular basis, it was a shock to see him crash but to walk away was a relief, what an amazing man and at an age of 92 as well.
He moved too much...and the pitch became unstable, you can see that in the video. Otherwise, if it would have been an engine fail, it would have just glided down like any gyrocopter. That's the best part about them, that they can glide down...otherwise, if it was built by an ELCHEAPO person, then he would have died. Yes, nice to see him walking away!
First of all this was not at Belfast, but Newtownards Airfield during an airshow in the 1980's or early 1990's.
At that time Autogiros were still largely experimental aircraft and their various designs meant some were not as stable in the air as others, and most were powered by 2 stroke engines.
The situation in 2008 is greatly changed with factory built, reliable 4 stroke powered aircraft capable of better and safer flight. The MT-03 is one of the safest designs currently flying.
Ohh.. That was a really nasty crash. Now when people tell me about the "fool-proof safety" of autogyros, I know better than to believe them. I guess a helicopter engine failure would probably have similar consequences if there wasn't enough height for an autorotation.
Realmente , é inacreditável a proeza do piloto , sair ileso desse acidente catastrófico .
Looks like he needs more dead stick practice.

LOL an autogyro has no engine that can stop. Yes there is an engine but it is just for starting!!
DJNimda 10 months ago
The goddamn point of gyros is that they don't spin wildly even when the rear engine cuts...

And it's not Belfast. It was EGAD - newtownards, about 15 miles east of belfast.

@brofun : you cant auto rotate in a gyrocopter. You dont have throttle, or collective pitch on the main rotor in a gyrocopter.
