The "buddha machine" is a $23 device that plays 9 ambient music loops composed by the music duo FM3. That's all it does. The title is playful or ironic rather than serious.
These are lifesavers for monks. Traditionally, monks are required to sing "Nammo Budda Blah Blah ..." all the time in a temple because it's good publicity. Singing would attract temple visitors which equals to more donations!
I think these buddha machines were invented in the 1980s by some Taiwan-based manufacturers. With these "buddha machines", monks may enjoy more free hours and temple visitors may enjoy endless chanting noise at home.
I live in Taiwan and it's true that many little temples have looped chanting coming from little gadgets that look just like that. It would be cool if they played this stuff through them. I'd sit at the temple and stare at the bright orange in my hand as folks looked on.

Actually, these were recently made by two guys who do techno music, but you are correct that they were inspired by the boxes you were talking about.
