@Prussia75 Well actually at that time probably not. The Prussian army reforms came about because of Bismarck and they destroyed Austria because of his diplomacy and their military power. By this time however they had moved onto breech loading rifles so that would be well after this battle.

@halokiller4412 They used muskets, which were basically rifles with out rifleing, which is the spiral grooving in the barrel, without that, the bullet didnt spin, meaning they had very little accuracy and because their weapons were so inacurate the only way they could ensure hitting what they were aiming at was to have everyone line up, level their guns and fire at the same time

@halokiller4412 Aim of the battle was to have as many men firing as possible, hence why they stood in a line. The musket was not easy to fire, so would not have been possible lying down and muskets when fired created a lot of smoke, so it was the best possible chance of seeing the enemy.
