Another classic from old school Sesame Street. I believe this is Maurice Sendak's only SS entry. And yes, as many have already mentioned, this would NEVER pass muster in today's PC laden Sesame Street. Consumption of liquor? Horrors!!
Just read on "The Atlantic" that Maurice is writing a book based on this character and they linked to your video, congrats! :-) I'll send the link via a message.
This is like a college frat party! It's cool to see lost classics like this on here. I remember seeing it as a kid and hasn't been on Sesame Street in forever (and of course they'd NEVER show it now!) This was also included as a hidden "Easter egg" on one of the Sesame Street Old School DVDs. Whenever I hear the song "Party With The Animals" by Ozzy I always think of this. Try watching this with the sound off and that song playing. It actually works pretty well!
As a child I was a bit scared by this, but I loved to see it all the same> It was, and still is, brilliant, along with 'Lowercase N' and the Sad Flower (Daisy on the rooftop set to Vivaldi lute concert,o in D largo). Nowadays, Sesame Street lacks any real creativity and true beauty. In fact my kids don't even watch it. (Dexter Mahadeo, Trinidad, West Indies)
nine swilling swine, Began to shriek and shake and whine: Ill give you pigs til number nine to split! Get lost! Vamoose! Just scram, or else Ill slice you into ham! Nine times the door slammed. Then again. How odd, thought Adeline. Its ten. And then a voice cried, meek and humble, Please let me in. Its your boy, Bumble. So Adeline, that mom divine, Took in her Bumble valentine And kissed him nine times over nine. Which isnt bad. In fact, its fine.
did you say this scared you on That website about "What scared you as a child?" I went to this to see what the heck could be so scary about Sesame street. LoL
I actually read on a muppet central forum that someone actually taped an 80s episode with the Bumble Ardy cartoon! I guess this was re-aired on rare occasions.
I saw this as a young kid...then years later, i bought The Beatles "White Album"" and i heard George Harrison's "Piggies" that song kept reminding me of this cartoon from Seseme Street. Noe everytime i watch this i think of the George Harrison song "Piggies"
who directed this film, and i wonder if that song didn't inspire him.
Seems like Sweet Adiline was about to give them " a damb good whacking"
I remember this somewhat well. I too was somewhat scared by it, but not to an overwhelming extent. One thing to note: Is the narrator here the same one on the '1-20 Number Elimination' clip from Sesame Street? Just wondering. Also, I see that there have been 99 text comments posted to this clip before mine, which is in keeping with the theme of the clip, and which isn't bad!:)
A boy of nine offering wine to nine swine? I'm sure the censors today would whine: "Depicting wine is out of line, we'll have to impose a hefty fine!"
Sweet Adeline Ardy worked her way up to become the president of the pharmaceutical giant known today as GlaxoSmithKline. Which isn't bad. In fact, it's highly profitable.
This used to scare the *&!! out of me! So many years ago. I am 37 now, so we are talking back around 1975 or so. In fact, I was so scared, that I refused to watch "Sesame Street" for a long time, for fear of them showing this clip! I even had nightmares about it! Now, it is strange how I have seen it and it makes me laugh!
You and me both! I don't know if it was the music or the pigs drawing on the walls (the vandals!). I think it was the "Sweet" Adeline threatening to slice the pigs into ham! I mean...how morbid is that?
Alcohol, vandalism, and death threats on a kids' show...looking at these oldies makes me realize how much stricter the PBS censors have gotten in thirty-odd years. It's a good thing that CTW used to realize kids are smarter than today's "child experts" claim; most of us who grew up with cartoons like these didn't invite dangerous guests to our place while Mom was at work, or grab the wine from the fridge while we were in grade school.
Wow Im 37 and I can say the same for Guy Smiley and the Count. Funny now scarry then. Now I show these to my kiddos and can help them with their fears. Good comment.
I have been looking for this!! My sister andI always say, Cheers, Cheers may bumble live 900 years! For every birthday and no one gets it. Thank you! How did you find this??
Thank you for posting this! I forgot about it until I saw it just now. I liked it as a kid and I'm 32 years old now. I can't remember if the swine frightened me but I always liked the ending and when bumble speaks. They would never show this now with drunk pigs and all. I never realized that they were drunk as a child, just knew they were dirty little pigs. Thanks!!!
This is probably one of the longest cartoons they ever ran on this show.
It's awesome to see Maurice Sendak's drawnigs animated so faithfully. It's a terrific job--it really looks like his book simply came to life, without any embellishments or streamlining.
As a kid I was amazed, they bust down his door and trash his house after he invited them and he stands there loving it! I was like "Get'em Mom, slice'em into ham, yeah!" lol
Love it. They will never show this one again. If I made a list of the top five Sesame Street clips that would never be shown again, this would be in the top five. Bumble had more fun on his ninth birthday than I did. Great memory.
LOL I got freaked by the mom at the end and kinda teary eyed when Bumble called out too...BTW Smith and Klein went out of business years ago,it was bought out by WalMart.
I wa just thinking about this one. yeah this was one of the skits that scared me as a kid. It was the scary music, the ominous-sounding narrator, and especially when the mother threatened to slice the pigs to ham.
his mother had a very VERY short shift.. i mean who works only 29 minutes a day...she is either on a subsidy program or she volunteers.. then, how does she survive financially?
I always loved this clip as a child. Maybe it's because the kitchen reminded me of my grandparents' who were living in Melrose, MA at the time that I first saw this.
After so many years, it is still divine. The only thing I never got is how come Bumble didn't get what was coming to him from his mom for inviting the swine over in the first place. Maybe because of his birthday? This was also back in the day when it was not uncommon for a 9 year old to be left home alone.
ok why did the mother leave her kid on his birthday sounds me its kinda sad to leave a 9 year old alone on his birthday maybe im reading into it too much hehe
I dont know why this scared me growing up. Especially when my mom would be late coming home from work and I was the only one at home. I kept thinking Pigs were going to break down my parents door and Bumble would tell them to get me. After 30 years lt doesnt scare me anymore. Thanks for helping me face my feears.
HA HA HA HA!!! That is SO FUNNY! I'm GLAD I wasn't the only one. This one scared the hell out of me TOO as a kid, especially when I was at home alone. I was afraid pigs would break down the door and ransack the house.
I laughed until I cried watching the pigs smashing dishes, forgot about that part! Love this one, thanks for posting it. Made my kid watch it and now he knows why I am so disturbed lmao
Just as funny and cool as I remember it. They would never show this today.Drunk pigs destroying a house
and passed out on the floor. I watched this as a kid and I never drank my parents wine or broke any of their dishes. We knew it was just a cartoon back then.
I guess we were just smarter than kids are today. By the way I applied for a job at Smith And Kline but that half-hour shift was already taken.
Kids today aren't less smart, it's just that their parents find different things to freak out about today than they did then. There may have been more freedom in some ways, but in others it was the Stone Age. Don't forget, the '70s was when ABC started cutting every explosion and fall from the Warner Bros. cartoons, clumsily editing them just to eliminate "violence". The rules are much more relaxed now--you can show a LOT. (Just watch "Billy and Mandy" if you don't believe me...)
If you can believe it I started to tear up there at the end. I used to bawl like a baby when this would come on. I think it's the look on the mother's face when she realized the door slammed ten times. Like she's hurt and disappointed and worried all at the same time.
The narrator is either voiceover man Ken Nordine of "Word Jazz" and "Colors" semi-fame, or someone who sounds exactly like him. Even the copy is identical to his style - I'd wager he wrote it. Really fun to see this again.
OMG, I used to get so upset when I watched this....to see the room all messed up (and that pig grafitti on the wall was what REALLY did it to me for some reason, LOL)....and then the ominous music when the mom came home....and then the kid coming back to his mom. Such memories! :)
to all who enjoyed, you're very welcome. Lectronimo: it looks that way, but then that pig disappears in the next shot only to reappear again on the floor : )
I totally forgot about this clip. I haven't seen this in 30 years! I'm wiping tears of nostalgia! I remember freaking out as a kid because the pigs were breaking dishes and the kid wasn't even trying to stop them!
Psychedelic Flashback!! Imagine a 5 year old in 1976 watching this alone, on kindly Sesame Street, and being totally freaked out by the whole concept! Well, that was me. Now I'm definitely going to need a stiff drink to get to sleep tonight.
Wow- I'm surprised this was even run on Sesame Street- what with the whole wine reference- but this whole thing was definitely reminiscent of "Where the Wild Things Are"- I bet Maurice Sendak did do the animation...
Yay! Jim Henson as Bumble!

Jim Henson himself provided the voice of Bumble Ardy

Oops! Sorry for the double post. I thought my first "Let's Party" comment didn't come in right away.
