This is a great performance of this song and I was sorry it had to end. One of the great bands and great guitar players! There are many great guitar players in the World and Mark stands amongst the best of them!
I never tire of Mark Knopfler's guitar. This is the only song that as it was played over and over on the radio didn't make me want to change the station.
I don't understand how I can still get chills listening to knopfler after all these years. I know his every bend, every vibrato, every pick... yet I never get tired and never fail to feel the music behind each and every beat. what a musician, what a composer, what an artist.
Did you all know Mark's actually left handed but plays with his right hand. Often carries a pick in his pocket as well, though uses it rarely. Great, GREAT guitarist and musician.
@gspinkwrld1 its not that rare for lefties to play righty. im a lefty but play righty. all my friends who are lefties play righty too. it really makes no difference which hand is dominant, you can learn to play either way no matter if u are lefty or righty. the only thing is u cant switch which way u play after you learn to play one way
and here we sit 25 years after, the children of our pants who loved this when they were young, yet we also love and enjoy this music just as much. fyi im 21 :)
Clawhammer is a highly rhythmic banjo playing style and common component of American old-time music. Mark uses this technique and does it VERY gracefully !!! Totally awesome guitarist !!!!
Who cares about who can play the fastest, When the audience can make a emotional connection through your guitar playing then you are doing something right. Have you ever noticed that after mark sings he plays a lead lick and you will notice that every lead lick that he plays goes a long with what he just sang. Perfect example of this is every song Mark writes. Check out "where do you think you're going" Rockpalast 1979, perfect example
GREAT! Get this folks!!! I used to be the Maitre'd at Da Silvano Restaurant in New York, NY, at the time NY's hottest Celebrity Hot Spot. One day on a Saturday Lunch I had Bozz Scagg, Mark Knolfer, and Sir PAUL McCARTNEY all in the restaurant at once at three different tables. They didn't even see each other until it was time that Paul McCartney was leaving the rest. and spotted Bozz Scagg with his wife, and 2 kid. talked to Bozz, walked away an then saw Mark n his wife .....Daniel in NYC
Mark is realy awesome. I enjoy the way he is playing Guitar. He is excellent. I can not get tired when I was listening to his music over and over again
Mark is realy awesome. I enjoy the way he is playing Guitar. He is excellent. I can not get tired when I was listening to his music over and over again
I wish cameramen and directors were guitarists. Here we have one of the players of our age, and what do they shoot? Face shots, long shots, shots of the drummer, rhythm, and bass player - all the while MK is ripping off stuff we all dream about. If these people were filming a lake, they'd shoot the trees on the shore and the mud on the bottom - we'd never see the water. Hello!?!
@1492tomato shouldnt the rest of the band be shown too? Remember the band is more than just the guitarist and lead singer. Without the rest of them there would be no Dire Straits.
IMO,Stevie Ray Vaughn was the best to play the guitar and get the best tones. His passion, soul and love for the music was unmatched.Hendrix was his idol and i would put him after SRV.And I like Mark a lot more then Clapton.
I was lucky enough to see Dire Straits at their concert in Brisbane a few weeks before this. Special moment of my life was close-up of Mark Knoffler's guitar work during Sultans of Swing on a big screen, yes!
i always see the fight who is the best guitarist, who is the n. 1. most people say jimi Hendrix, some say jimmy Page, some say knopfler and so on.
but i think u cant compare guitarists like knopfler with jimmy hendrix or some other. im pretty sure in speed and technique Hendrix is better than knopfler, but that sound from knopfler is so unique, nobody has it, for me its a whole diferent level of guitar. i just think its wrong to compare them cause they are so diferent
@piscolabis16 Hendrix...? bleh. You can compare guitarists I think because its how diverse they can be with their music that makes them great, but a combination of things. Clapton isnt even as good as Knopfler, or Satriani in my opinion because theyre more focused on the guitar. Clapton can sing better, but the guitar is Mark Knopflers voice, and Hendrix definitely doesnt play it like he can.
@Imst92 -- Been a fan of MK and dire straits since the late 1970s...agreed, MK, etc., have different styles but, as you say, Knopfler expresses himself with more feeling than just about anybody else. First heard this song when I was 22 years old; still love it at, yes--amazingly, in full lusty living mode--at 54.
@piscolabis16 Speed, Hendrix may have Mark beat but I thin Mark can be just as fast if he chose too but that was not Marks style. Marks sound is clean, undistorted and has a better rhythm to it.
Now as far as technique, Mark has hendrix beat all day, Marks finger picking is the most interesting Technique you will find. Sure finger picking may not be the hardest thing to do but try doing it Marks way, Not that easy his way. Remember Mark broke all the rules the way he fingerpicks.
@liftedcj7on44s Bingo! I throw a few other stellar "pickers" into the mix i.e. Jeff Beck (duh). I've liked this particular "Sultans" vid over the others on YT. Thanks to the poster too.

@liftedcj7on44s sorry mate I have to respectfully disagree, Mark is a god among men but Hendrix is a deity, his knowledge and ability to "play" the guitar not just make notes in a certain order is easily on par with Knopfler
@sup3rspiffy I beg to differ highly. As far as technique is concerned, MK beats Hendrix anyday. The thing is that MK could play like Hendrix if he'd choose to but that's not his style whereas Hendrix couldn't have fingerpicked like MK does. Hendrix was a master but MK is from another planet.
Looking forward to Bob Dylan's European tour with Mark and crew.......goodluck and have fun..........Ahoy from the Lowlands.........hug xx Annemarie (Dylan's biggest fan!)
hey, bleachfreakchris, you don't know your Hendrix! He NEVER did the white powder. Hendrix was pot, LSD, diet pills, uppers and downers. He died choking on his vomit, not from drugs!!!
Mark has been a major influence on my songwriting. If you want check it by clicking "MrAlvarda" down below. Songs like "Turn around", "Train of life" or "Corporate World" are definitely the closest to his style.
Remember that Mark is finger picking...everyone else uses picks and his sound is still that clean and clear!! Let's not forget Down to the Waterline and Six Blade Knife!
95% of teens these days listen to the same formulaic, crappy pop over and over again. If you're one of the 5% who still listens to real music, thumb this up, then copy and paste it to at least five videos. Don't let the spirit of rock and roll die!
Isn't it hard for people who can't analyse music, because they lag musical knowledge, to say that hendrix looks like a beginner when they even can't understand the piano-approach guitar playing style of Hendrix ? Knopfler has an extraordinary talent, but don't accuse Jimi when you know shit of music.
Best I've ever seen in Youtube, love you Dire Straits! ...just can't stop watching it...thanks God for giving such talent to Mark , can't say anymore...
The saxophone sounds so heavenly with the guitar in the background....and at 7:07 knopfler looks somewhat irritated after he hears the saxophone...looked like he had to play a diff tune or something.
Fingerpicking is where it's at. It's got more tone control than a flatpick. People use flatpicks to get a biting tone and for the apparant spped it gives. But the flat pick takes the thumb and the first finger out of action to grip a piece of plastic. Classic guitarists don't use a plectrum and most of them shred harder than any rock musician.
@cambruoso actually, the fender Mark uses in this video is a Schecter with a fender headstock. he acquired it a few years after most of his other Schecters
@Punkrockzone Yeah, Mark Knopfler is the definition of awesomeness, isn't he? ;)
He amazes me to no end with his unique genius and his ridiculously talented fingers. I can still remember vividly my reaction when I first watched his live performance. I was completely awestruck then. I still am now. And always will be, I have no doubt..
Watching his right-hand fingers play so crazy fast, it's hard to believe that he is left-handed....
I queued up overnight to be 2nd in line to buy tickets for this concert. We kept ourselves warm in sleeping bags. The guy behind me was hilarious. He spent the early hours of the morning trying to convince me that Bruce Lee was still alive. The four concerts sold out in a couple of minutes. It turns out that Australia was the end of the tour, so after going around Australia, they returned to Sydney and filled TWENTY FOUR concerts at the Sydey Entertainment Centre in a row !!!!!!
Everything about this song, no, sorry, it's not only a song, but a symphony of extraordinary talents that will last far beyond Justin Bieber and his lifeline... I'm sure even God has this on his ipod!
Minutes 5:36 to 6:20 "my favorite part of the guitar solo". Although all of it is awesome. Flew from Arkansas to Kansas City, KS to see them in concert back in 1989.
I was there in '86 at Sydney. I loved this concert one of my favourites, the sax solo on romeo and juliet is my all time rock concert moment. Saw Queen at same venue in 87.
I never get bored of that song and solo.

The saxophone sounds so heavenly with the guitar in the background....and at 7:07 knopfler looks somewhat irritated after he hears the saxophone...looked like he had to play a diff tune or something.

Wow! All I can say is AWESOME!!! Jimmi Hendrix, Eric Clapton step aside, Knopfler is truly the Sultan!

@Think4ourselves

@AugustusLarch i disagree if you get a thumbpick it doesnt restrict anything and gives you the same performance

Saw Queen at same venue in 87.
shifdy64 8 months ago
@shifdy64 The last ever Queen concert was at Knebworth on 9/8/1986, so im not sure which band you saw that night in 1987 but it wasn't Queen
