As amazing as this episode was, it was completely disjointed from all the episodes. It was like Sherlock changed his personality. They made both Sherlock and Irene Adler weak.
I hope they bring back Irene for an episode. Loads of my purist friends have been ripping into the episode for all the chemistry/closest thing Sherlock will get to love etc...
Personally I think it's canon for the 21st century. In the late 1800's they wouldn't have been nearly as bold as they are now. And people are a lot more emotionally open now. And I reckon, were it any other pairing they would've shagged asap. Personally I think the game-playing was the only thing that stopped them.

I'm usually a fan of Adler/Holmes relationships, but I didn't like the Irene Adler story in this show. It was very surreal, he had seen her one time and he was so into her? While NOBODY ever even got Sherlock attention, she did it like it was nothing? Mmh. :/ I think they did everything too fast.
The author is very careful with his characters. There is no sexuality implied concerning Sherlock, quite the opposite. It is important to understand the detectives purpose, how his preferences and idiosyncrasies drive the plot of each book and short story. Bond stumbles around the edges of sociopathy, Sherlock chooses a way of being that swims into the deepest depths, he is beyond the grasp of love, but it does not mean his witness of it has nil effect. @piiink1 Glad someone said it, thank you. If, and that's a BIG if, Sherlock were to be with anyone (it's just not his style), it'd be John. Adler is an interesting character, the female version of Sherlock almost (though not to the same degree of genius), but most certainly not relationship material. I don't care if it's the 1800's or 2000's, Irene's character should not be used as relationship material for Sherlock. No one should be (Again John would be my next and alternative choice)

@HeathsHarleyQuinn Well Sherlock isn't the type of person to have a romantic relationship, he even said it himself. However if he were to have a relationship I think it would be with John, because that is the person that he is closest to, the person he feels the most for. Irene is wonderful I just think he doesn't really see her, or anyone, romantically. I'm not entirely against Irene either, I was just hoping for this show to be different.

I also find the love story going on between Holmes and Watson to be far more interesting, sure, it’s a far different kind of love story (platonic) but it’s certainly more realistic and has more depth than some woman who appeared in one story and was never mentioned again.

I prefer to stick to the proper Conan Doyle canon because otherwise you have all these conflicting author’s opinions and it just gets confusing. As to the mentions, I'd completely forgotten about them. Its been so long since I've read the stories.

@piiink1 Glad someone said it, thank you. If, and that's a BIG if, Sherlock were to be with anyone (it's just not his style), it'd be John. Adler is an interesting character, the female version of Sherlock almost (though not to the same degree of genius), but most certainly not relationship material. I don't care if it's the 1800's or 2000's, Irene's character should not be used as relationship material for Sherlock. No one should be (Again John would be my next and alternative choice)

@NekoAlias Yes, but as is stated in the episode(which I saw last night) no one really knows Sherlock's mind except Sherlock. And I don't think after last nights episode anyone can deny that there are some mutual feelings between them. it was a very passionate episode, in which she turns out to be bisexual, Holmes is presumably not gay and Watson wants to believe he isn't gay. And Irene falls madly for Sherlock. The last words in the episode and the way that they are said are enough for me. :D

However if he were to have a relationship I think it would be with John, because that is the person that he is closest to, the person he feels the most for. Irene is wonderful I just think he doesn't really see her, or anyone, romantically. I'm not entirely against Irene either, I was just hoping for this show to be different.
