Scorpion vowed to protect the younger Sub-Zero to atone for murdering his elder brother.

However, that later changed when Quan Chi mislead Scorpion into believing that the younger Sub-Zero was actually amongst the Lin Kuei warriors who murdered Scorpion's clan and family, which lead into Mortal Kombat 4. In the end, Scorpion realizes that it was infact Quan Chi whom was responsible, therefore leading to their feud in MK: Deadly Alliance.
