He takes 5 ones for the 5 dollar bill. Then with the 5 ones he ALREADY had, she suggests trading the five too for a ten dollar bill. It's just getting someone to give you a ten for a finn via distraction. trick's played bit differently in the movie depending on situation. Hard to believe an old Carny would've fallen for it, but..KID.
Experienced cashiers know to place the bill they receive crosswise on the drawer until the current transaction is complete -- thus no guessing about the denomination. However, that would not have helped against the type of "social engineering" practiced here (collusion between Pray and Addie in their serial transactions). Lessons: don't give in to a kid -- have her folks come down and square things if necc.; and no change as a "favor". Keep your head and don't open the register willy-nilly.
