  • I was at this show and I remember them playing this tune. There were lasers at the end of the tune.

  • Incredible song. Phenomenal vocal power - WOW!!!

  • This song is very special to me. I'll remember it forever!

  • kerry, my friend. I hope you get soon better. We all miss you.

  • This was right around the time Kerry found Jesus.

  • Very soon thereafter.

  • @rickyon about a year before, actually -- this song is about Urantia, not Christianity

  • Where did you see me mention otherwise and I'm not one who stands on exact dates and times so yes it was closer to a year from the date of this performance that Kerry was Born Again. If you'd like I'll look up the exact date.

  • @rickyon Right below this (on my screen, anyway) Semler1430P says "This was right around the time Kerry found Jesus" and you replied "Very soon thereafter". Now that I'm looking at it again, I can see that this is what happened. You probably mean that he found Jesus very soon after this song, and I was taking you to mean this is very soon after he found Jesus. The latter is false, so I wanted to correct the record, but I was misreading you, I think. Sorry.

  • No problem. I just generalize and say 1980. It is hard to pick up a thread months or even a year or 2 later here on you-tube and decipher the spirit of the conversation sometimes. I've done the same before.

  • Thanx!

  • You're welcome!

  • A classic!!!!

  • I've always loved how "A glimpse of home" flowed into "Away from you" on the album/CD. These were my favorite two songs from Monolith. I love the crescendo at the end! Awesome!

  • I was at this show, and also the show in Madison, WI earlier in the tour. They played all of Monolith at both shows! Do you have "Angels Have Fallen" from this show? Great stuff!

  • Yes I've posted that as well from this show plus a couple more. Take your time and scroll through all of my posts and you'll find many great Kansas performances!

  • I remember this tour. The show opened with this song after a lengthy intro with weird music that reminded me of cows being tortured or something! They had a curtain that fully encircled the stage and it opened very slowly while the background music was playing.

The band was having a tons of fun and I remember stuff like a life-sized stuffed human was shot from the lighting rig and then 2 people dressed as nurses coming on stage with a stretcher, putting it on the stretcher and then leaving

  • Just Wonderful Rick. Thank's I needed that. So Cool !

  • You're welcome Tyler.

  • Rick, I amazed at the idiots that choose to argue with you.... Great post..... Walsh had a difficult time singing this piece live. He sounds great to me

  • All the commenter had to do was look at the title above the video! I think he was just confused but hey who am I to argue with someone who's worked for JAM productions for 18 years! I guess that means he's all knowing about music! Thanks for the kind words as always Marc!

  • This is one of my favorite Kansas albums. Very underrated. Everyone in top form. Thanks for the post.

  • Your welcome.

  • Great piece! This band is one of my biggest influences. Saw Leftoverture 1st and nearly every tour since. I can remember moments back then when I nearly cried at the sheer beauty of the moment. No other band has done that. God Bless Kansas!

  • thanks cdmonlaino.

  • I never said the song was called Monolith in the storm I said the recording of the whole show was called Monolith in the storm. If you'd like I can give you a link where you can see the CD for yourself and see the jewel case and artwork for yourself!

  • the song was never called monolith in the storm. before or after its release. i worked for JAM productions for 18 years.

  • You don't know what you're talking about! I have a CD of this show in a jewel case that is titled "Monolith In The Storm" With artwork and all the correct information. For you to say that it was never called this is absurd! It is widely known as "Monolith In The Storm". If you know so much then tell us what the title "really" is and can you point to some evidence(pictures?) I can!

  • o.k.. kansas fans... i too have never heard that title before.... it's always been glimpse of home as far as i know... look the real sad thing is, there isn't video of this... walsh at his very best!!!!

  • Pray for Kerry to make a full recovery !!!

  • I saw this tour at the Palladium in N.Y.C.

They were so tight during this period !!

They only played this album and carry-on for the encore. The girl I was with said --They didn't play long enough !! I told her - Hey, when you play music this difficult you can only play an hour !!!! lol

    Dave.

OMG that poster at 5"21 was the 1st poster I had in my room when I was a kid !!

Wow Rick you just brought me right back to my childhood !!

  • I would have been O.K. with that set list, but your date was right 1 hour is too short.

I never had a Kansas poster when I was a kid but my friend was an artist so I paid him $20 to paint the cover of "Song For America" on a t-shirt. I wore it all the time!

Did you ever see my comment on your last virtual Journey vid? I said that it was cool to see you outside and that I loved the attitude you exhibited! Can't wait for the next one! Any chance of doing an original?

    Rick

  • I have to tell you Rick there are times when I am waiting for the computer to power up where I will jam out on a sound and say to myself we should stop this b.s. and come out with an original prog. piece. But the time is not right for me to get that serious . It is like the way Kansas feels at the moment not wanting to have the pressure in recording new Kansas material.

    Dave.

  • I saw Kansas in 1980 at Budokan, Tokyo, but I dont remember they played this. It is an amazing version. Kansas is the best rock band ever existed.

  • If you went to the show on January 16th 'A Glimpse of Home' was not performed. Setlist was: Song For America, People Of The South Wind, Point Of Know Return, On The Other Side, Closet Chronicles, The Wall, Dust In The Wind, Child Of Innocence, Down The Road, Stay Out Of Trouble, Portrait, Sparks Of The Tempest, Carry On My Wayward Son, How My Soul Cries Out For You, Magnum Opus. A recording exists.

  • Hey spinalcrackerbox,

Thanks a lot for the setlist. I had the bootleg too, but I kept moving all over and I lost all of my music collection.

  • good stuff rick. thanks!

  • You're welcome Rich.

  • This is without doubt the greatest band ever!

I'm so ashamed that i come from a generation that will never be able to make anything anywhere near as good as this.

  • No need to be ashamed! You are a product of your times. The music biz is really screwed up now and is trying to find its way. It will probably take a long time but once this climate with the internet and corporate assholes gets untangled and on track then the truly talented, who are lost in the sauce right now, will again rise to the top and great music will again be experienced by the masses!

  • Spectacular!! Have never heard this live before, thanks for posting! Wow, that guitar is smokin' live, and Steve knocks it out of the park!

  • Hey Brad, welcome to you-tube! If you like Kansas then you've come to the right place. You should check out my last two live Kansas posts. Both are extremely rare : "Lamplight Symphony " full version and "The Devil Game ". All of my vids are of the slide show variety but to me the music is the thing and no live vids exist for a lot of these songs. I've posted 50 live Kansas tunes and 20 others. I also have many other great songs, almost all from the 70's. Check it out.......Rick

  • Fab song!!! Fab pics!!! thanks rickyon!!!

  • You're welcome!

  • Love that guitar here!! Are other recordings available from this tour? I'm really getting into Kansas these days.

  • This recording is the only one I've found from this tour!(see info box) Don't ask me why their aren't more. I've posted an exceptionally clean copy of "On The Other Side" but it was a one off bonus from the 1994 Box set. I've posted many songs from lots of concerts from 1973-1981from this my favorite band. The latest is the rarest "Lamplight Symphony" full version.

  • Thanks for your reply. I just went to a certain website (not a torrent site) and there is this one and one listed as Tingley Coliseum, NM from 12/05/79 and then the next one is Chicago from 10/80, NY from November and then we are already in August 81, a festival in Holland. However, I know for a fact that a live in Japan silver release exists from around this time. I will try to get it.

  • Ok, got the info: Budokan, Tokyo, Japan. 16 Jan 1980 - It seems they did not play 'Glimpse of Home' here :-( Only 3 songs from Monolith here. It seems they wanted to offer more of a greatest hits selection for Japan.

  • Awesome!

  • wow thats weird man .great tune the guitar is cranking on this 1 and steve is the best.

  • A great piece. We played this piece every night in my band way back when.

This tour was incredible. They were the tightest I ever heard them around this time.

You have a rare gem here my friend.

    Dave.

  • Thanks Dave! I don't know if I told you but I was in a band for years that had an electric violin player and I couldn't talk them into doing any Kansas! So I envy you that.

  • A Kansas Classic! Excellent lyrics!!! Thanks!!!

  • You're welcome.

  • Can you post Opus Insert from the same concert? They played the entire Monolith album at the start of this tour. It was never the same after this tour. Dates in Japan and Europe were not nearly as good as the US summer tour of 79

  • The Monolith Tour never had any Europe dates. It ended with 3 shows in Japan and you are correct the setlist was changed for those shows. The Audio Visions Tour came to Europe in '81 though.

  • You're welcome. When I heard my friend had this I too became excited! I've posted lots of Kansas and some of it is live so check it out!

  • VERY COOL!!!

  • Thanks. One of my favorite Kansas tunes.

  • You're welcome! Its in my top 5 too! Have you heard the demo of Walsh singing some of the Vinyl Confession tunes? I heard it many years ago but can't find it anywhere!

  • Yes, the Kansas Depot site had it. But that's no longer up. The quality wasn't that great. But I really think they should take those tapes and release (perhaps remaster and add some additional tracks to make them "complete") them. I mean, why not?

  • My buddy gave me a link to those files and I now have a copy! I'm afraid to upload any of it for fear of being descended upon by some kind of goons and being banned from you-tube! They are interesting to say the least! I agree with you but I'm sure there are legal issues that keep that from happening!

  • Well as an attorney and a prof. of, among other things, copyright law, yes, there are copyright issues with virtually EVERY time an entire song is posted on YouTube.

The best thing to do would be to contact Livgren and get his clearance.

Though the record companies usually own the copyright to the sound recordings; but since the demo wasn't released on a record Livgren et al. might be the only ones with a copyright interest in the demo tapes.

  • Thanks for the advice! I'll give it a try! I'm sure you're well aware of the set-up here with YT with the hit or miss nature of uploaded songs being accepted or rejected! I just wish there were an easier way to do it without going through all the work and being rejected at the very end of the process.Perhaps a list of the copyrighted material database that they are running this stuff through for approval!

  • My pleasure. The way it works (as I understand it) is that YouTube lets you post anything until someone claims copyright ownership and then they automatically take it down. The only way to get it back up, I'd imagine, is if their claim was fraudulent (i.e., if I went around claiming ownership in stuff I clearly do not own). But if the case is debatable, you won't get it back up.

  • They must have a database on hand that they run these submissions(Uploads) through because the rejection comes within minutes! One good thing about Kansas is nothing I've uploaded has been questioned including this one which I had my doubts about! I've uploaded 118 songs so far and I've gotten 20 rejections! Sometimes some songs from one album are accepted and others from the same album are rejected?????

  • Nice video man! I'm glad you enjoyed it though, I can't actually recall where I found that recording, which, I suppose, attests to it's rarity. If I remember correctly the reason these songs are so hard to find live is because they played every song of the album early on in the tour, but stopped doing so later. Not that I've actually seen any other Monolith tour performances. Kansas is glorious live...
