OK I came here due to it being suggested to me and I have read the comments. It is a story of love and loyalty and friendship and commitment. Yes, there is a definite homoerotic subtheme. This is a great movie. It is not centered on sex. It is a very complex tale of two lives in pain which happened to cross. Personally, I became uneasy once I realized the theme. I do not think the coach was a predator, he was overcome by the beauty and apparent odd innocence of Tommy. The resulting love/hate story is so poetic it caught me in it's pathos. Damn it, I cried. Maybe this movie was ahead of its time. Not a Sandusky issue. A human issue. Oscars? Yeah, to both. Re-release it!

@Gaffhart77 : Although the main characters share the same name (and profession), I don't believe there is any connection between the two films. The plots and the "Tommy Riley" characters are completely different.

I saw the entire movie....it left me in tears. Eddie Jones, who plays the trainer Marty Goldberg, was ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. He deserved an Oscar for his performance, his acting left me speechless and gave me goosebumps. J.P. Davis, who plays the main character Tommy Riley, was also brilliant, but Eddie Jones steals the show in this movie
