Its really good, some tips: speak faster, kind of funny but when you say American it doesnt sound very american haha. words like 'because' are hard to say but thats something to work on too. also the o sound in out and about. hope this helps, I love english accents my sister and I always talk to each other with english accents people think we are crazy haha keep practicing!
I don't think that speed of communication is what makes an American accent believable. Honestly, I think it has more to do with language conventions of American English, if I may phrase it as such. Primarily, we use a lot of "short-cut" words via conjunctions such as "don't" or "can't" or "isn't" and we have a lot of words that don't follow proper English language rules. Utilizing those as well as attempting the accent will go a long way toward making the ruse complete. ;-)
dont say "quite a lot". just say "a lot". saying "quite a lot" is too proper for america =P and also, you do too much upward inflection on your words. like when you say, "i cant really explain it, it just sounds different." american accent has more of a downward inflection on the end of the words. does that make sense? your accent is very good tho.
you may need to step back from it a bit and let it go. you have an ear for the accent. some people just have it and some don't. you got it. don't work so hard on it. your ear for the sound and natural ability when you're not trying as hard is serving you well. you may need to practice a bit when you're going after a particular dialect, but once you can mimic the basic sounds, you'll have it. my husband can do several accents well, whereas my attempts suck balls. ;)
i've seen all 3 of your videos, and your accent is excellent! great job. you sound very natural. having said that, i think you may be working on it too hard. i was surprised to hear you say that you thought you got worse, so i listened to vid 1 again. i agree. i think hyour fist vid was the most natural sounding. listen to hyourself in vid 3 min 1:37 when you mention talking with your hands. while your accent is still very good, it's not as good as in vid 1. i believe your over thinking it.
@htfcm I was being an ass, more or less. The point I was trying to make is that she could come here and totally pull off being a native. In this video you're aware that she's not American and therefore your ears are picking the pronunciation apart.
hey, so Im from Ft. Worth, Texas, United States (near dallas) and I cant tell when your using your accent and when you aint. You dont sound like a yankee or like one of our east coast friends. You sound more like.....well....not stricly California, maybe like someone I heard from Oregon once? I mostly been round down here (as in Texas ans Lousiana. If youd like I can post a vid of me talking on my channel and you can get an idea) Any questions feel free to message me.
One more comment -- if you're trying to sound American, don't forget our lovely word "gotten." I'm pretty sure you said "I actually think I've got worse." American would be "I've gotten." We'd most likely pronounce it with a glottal stop, i.e. like "go'en." But you're doing great. I'm working on learning a British accent and if I were anywhere near as good at it as you are at American, I might have the nerve to post it on Youtube too. Kudos for going for it.
One other detail: Notice that in the American accent, one syllable gets the main stress but other, alternating syllables will still get *some* stress. An American will say "video" as VID-ee-OH, with more stress on VID but a little stress on OH, whereas you're only stressing VID and then hurrying through the -eo part. I suspect this is a general thing for you to pay attention to but I've only noticed it on "video." You could pass for American right now, though.
Your American accent is getting very good. You sound a bit Californian because some younger Southern California speakers pronounce /o/ and /u/ a bit closer to British (they're not trying to be British, it's just coincidence), and so the trace of your British accent on those vowels can pass for Californian. If you want to be more perfectly neutral American, focus on /o/ and /u/ -- just a tiny adjustment: pull your tongue back a tad more.
I'm from the East Coast (New Jersey) and you sound amazing. I would never have known you were British. I don't think you sound Californian, you just sound generic American. Good job!!!!!
Your outfit in the second video was better :-p But I'd say the 3rd video does have the best American accent. I'm from southern California, and you do sound like many girls around here. It's not perfect, there are times where your british accent starts to fade in, but overall it sounds good.
no offense :) ... you say thawwt. that totally gives it away.. say thot,,, like the word "on"... and dont pronounce your T's as well. or anything for that matter.. brittish people when imitating our accent over pronounce things.. probably because of how you want to sound... and say "-ent" instead of "-int" like accEnt instead of accInt.. and the way you say God also gives it away.. :/ not trying to be mean.. just want to help :) and im from nebraska,, so i dont have a regional accent..
@358cjh She pronounced 'thought' the same way I would (I'm from California but with strong Midwestern influences). It's true some speakers would pronounce 'thought' to rhyme with 'lot', but that isn't standard across the whole US. Do you make a distinction between the pronunciation of 'cot' and 'caught'? Nowadays many Americans don't, but the majority still do. For those of us who distinguish those two vowels, the way Hollie pronounced 'thought' was completely normal.
Emphasize the sound "AXE" in accent. It's more like "axe-sant" than how it's spelled. lol! Good job otherwise! It sounds pretty legit. Just a few words here and there that you have to not pronounce parts of the word... "Title" is more like "Tight-uuull". Also you say all your "a's" very long, like "haaahhhve." (ahh) where as it's more like "hav-v-ve." (aeeh) :D Work on making your words rounder and your vowels need to be shorter and the end of the words are more emphasized. Hope this helps!
I'm American, but sadly I can't offer you much advice. I do have a few suggestions and I hope they help. There are a few words that sound very British when you say them and they are "Video," America," and "Accent." At the end of the word "video" I can tell that you're trying to hide you accent and oddly enough when you say "accent" I can tell. I hope this helps :) I think you're really good! Better than a lot of people on TV who try to have an American accent, that's for sure. =D
Nice job Hollie! I will have to agree with @randomsk8vidsfan in that you sound like you're from southern California. I've lived in CA my whole life, essentially always around the SF bay area, so it does sound just very slightly different then right here, but definitely a CA accent. As compared with your video #2, this one IMO is probably interchangeable with the other. Sometimes you let the British through, but it's mostly totally on the ball! Congrats!
yes this accent is almost flawless if you were going for a west-coast accent(which is probably the one youre most exposed to being there) but i live in Virginia which is a southern state(although i dont have a southern accent). i would absolutely love to see your take on a southern accent.
i love your american accent, i'm from America, the midwest, & it does sound like some1 from Cali but thats not a bad thing. "Valley girls" as they're called are still very popular in the USA. I'm OBSESSED with british accents anytime i meet someone w/ an accent i get so excited lol I'm so fasinated w/ your culture. I've always imagined that British people think we sound harsh or dumb when speaking lol is that true?? what is England like?
Yea I hear the california - valley accent. And yea, it's not one a lot of people like in the states. You're doing very good though. Your American accent is better than my British one, that's for sure xD
It does sound like your getting a little worst (positive criticism). You did correct the slow sentences and emphasis at the end of your sentences. I think once your here in America, having a British accent is actually much cooler and people will find you more fascinating if your just yourself. I cant imagine going to UK and talking in a British accent b/c id be fake. However, people would find it fun to know that you can do an American accent. But you should just be yourself. Hope this helps!
Oops, one more thought - I noticed with your "ah" sounds, I could tell you were British. American accent has a lot shallower sounding "ah", not so full like British, if that makes sense.
And also, when you say the word "accent" you don't sound American. You kind of meld both "c's" into one. Try saying it more like "AK-scent", instead of "aksint".
You do sound very west coast. (I was born and raised in California, and then lived in Washington...they sound about the same, unless you are very "L.A." and have a valley girl accent.
The only things I've noticed is you've got to watch your "ing" at the end of words. I notice English people sometimes drop the "g". So, for the word "working" - instead of saying "workin'" , pronounce the "ing" very distinctly at the end.
Most of what you say, you have an american accent. But when you say "on-board", "worse" and your "a's" your british accent shows through. Yes, American generally talk faster (although, i would speak at your pace now when speaking to my dad cause he was hard of hearing). I would recommend deciding what type of american accent you want to copy. There's the Kentucky (but in America it is looked down upon), New Jersey, Boston, Midwest (it's the most popular with people involved in TV), Southern, etc
You do sound American. Keep in mind, America has SO MANY different accents. One thing you could improve on is when you say "OMG" try saying it like "oh my god" so it comes as three separate words. I notice in your video it sounded like "omigod" which would be one word. Other than that, I would have thought you were American and not British.
Your "accent" does sort of sound as though you are from california. That may be because most american television shows and movies are filmed in california.
Your a's like in "talk" are still sounding like the american O like in "stop". Also your O in "now" has too much of an open sound to it. You need to pull your tongue back a little when saying "now". Other than that I thought your accent was brilliant. Good work.
It sounds a lot better, you have improved. It's always important to have an interest in an accent before you attempt (which you do). Our consonants and vowels are harder then those of the UK (I am American and I've lived in New York, North Carolina, California, Maryland, Texas, Virginia) And We love you too (From America)
lmao.. Awesome American accent, not bad at all. From what I heard It sounds pretty much like basic American. You should work on how to pronounce your (As) as an American would. Try opening your mouth a little wider when saying them. When you say words such as (all) they have a slight British accent to them. Minor stuff. Ps. You wont offend us, but if you do offend an American over this, tell him to shut the hell up.
your accent is sounding good, but you should work on your american phrasing- not many people say how they are "getting along" with something unless it is a person- they talk about how "it's coming along."
also, when people are talking about california accent they are talking about when your voice goes up at the end of a word, sounding like a question- it is called valley accent, (not one much admired by anyone here in the states), is often associated with being "blond."
You sound very southern Californian. Its an almost perfect so Cal surfer accent. We as Americans do tend to talk faster, and use our hands when we speak. You might try talking while chewing some bubble gum.
For the most part you sound very much like somebody from the United States. Like most people have already stated it depends on what part of the country you live in. If you had not stated what your intent was I would have had a hard time realizing that you are not from the U.S.. Keep up the good work, I think it's very impressive when you can change your accent like that. Personally I think your original accent sounds awesome but maybe that's because I'm from the U.S. Good Luck!
You do sound Californian. I've been a Californian since my birth and through the majority of your video you don't sound like you have an accent to me. People from Oregon & Washington state also don't seem to have accents to me which is why in the comment to your previous video I said you sound like us west coast Americans.
I'm an American who lives in New England. Take my word for it, ur accent is pretty much flawless. Some people in the comments say they can tell, but I think that's only because they *already know* ur not American. If u were here, I'm positive everybody would assume u were born here. Yes, it does sound Californian/West Coast (but lots of girls sound like that these days).
It's pretty good, though you occasionally let some British-sounding words slip out. I think you could come to Texas and tell people you're from California and not many people would question it. You'd be a lot more popular sticking with the British accent though. By the way, Americans would say, "I've gotten worse."
if you want advise i really am not sure you could check out these videos how to get an american accent that guy does a great job um... your doing really well but your american accent is still a bit funny sounding just keep at it you have gotten alot better
Hollie, you don't have to worry about those people who say that your American accent sounds Californian. Anyone with an American accent will have regional nuances as well, and it is better to have a California accent than any other region. For example: New England accents are ugly and mispronounced, especially Boston. Southern accents usually carry a negative stigma. If you are looking for a "neutral" American accent, California is the way to go because we all grow up on Hollywood movies and TV!
@nephosis "New England accents are ugly and mispronounced" Wow, that's really offensive. There's nothing "mispronounced" about accents over here; there is NO *right* way to pronounce English; if there was, then there wouldn't be accents in the first place. Ur comment that it is "better to have a California accent than any other region" is ridiculous.
