  • Victor/Victoria is for talented actors/actresses!

  • She's Liza. But, she's not Julie. Victor/Victoria is for Julie. Not for Liza.

  • She's a work of art!

  • Liza Minnelli should be ashamed of herself trying to do this song. She sounds like she's talking through the song with absolutely no voice or melody. Young Chrs from Glee has her beat hands down.

  • @texasgold111 'ashamed' ? She was standing in for an ailing Julile Andrews, and I think she is sexy, very musical and very FIERCE. Enjoy your auto-tune generation.Gleeeeeeee to you sir.

  • I love Liza's version, as well as Julie's. Julie may be the original, but Liza brings a different sense of style to this song!

  • she does look like an adorable ugly chap.

  • This is Poor why would you do this :o(

  • liza did a great job and is the much better dancer.

  • I just can't see anyone but Julie Andrews singing this one.

  • this is awful.

  • good god this is the worst version of this song i've ever heard! She's a good singer, no doubt about that, but this is a horrible song choice for her range.

  • BOOOO!!!!! Only Julie Andrews can sing this song!!

  • Do you have the instrumental??

  • the song was written for julies range not lizas. Liza does a great job here. If you check she did sell out this show and made them a ton of money during her run. I love Julie and Liza both so lets be fair

  • @ajgroelant There should have been a DVD version of Liza's V/V like they did with Julie's, they're both amazing

  • i would have loved to see Liza play this 30 years ago

  • I wonder if someone ever recorded Raquel Welch's turn playing Victoria. Even though not too many people enjoyed Liza's performance, I think she wasn't bad.To honor the truth, the character will always be associated to Dame Julie Andrews, who shined through in the movie and the Broadway version.

By the way,are there videos of Toni Tenille playing Victoria?

  • Who gives a monkey's how old she was when she did this....aside from Julie, Liza was the only other singer out there that could pull this off.

  • @opalasattic you should give Christopher Colfer (from glee) a try; he's no Julie, but I think he sounded better than Liza.

If you want: search for "le jazz hot glee" :P

Now, impromptu publicity apart, yeah I didn't like how Liza did this at all u.u

  • @opalasattic Absolutely! Personally I love them both! But in Le Jazz Hot I prefer Julie! But they're both godly divine!

  • Comparisons aside...this is one godawful performance...

  • Julie Andrews = instant boner-killer

  • I like Lisa Minelli better, Julie Andrews always reminded me like a school nun.

  • @cuentisa It's Liza with Z, not Lisa with an S ;)

  • I like Lisa Minelli better, Julie Andrews always reminded me like a school nun.

    It's M-i-double n-then e- double l - i

  • is there a recording of this song other than on video?

  • @Notebookofamermaid I think they were probably burned or jettisoned into space.

  • love liza minnelli's version of this song. i find that her singing style truly projects the 'hotness' of the song : )

  • She is killer - American way!

  • While i loved Liza in Cabaret, if this had been the version of this i saw first, i probably wouldn't have liked it as much as i do. I don't really like this version of this song.

  • wow, amazing, but i preffer Julie, why? because Lizza Always Look like a drag queen hahaha

  • It's very sad how so many people have put down Liza's outstanding performance!! She's not supposed to be Julie Andrews....she's simply Liza....and that should be enough for anybody!! After listening to Liza's performance, she's so perfect as a leading lady....to a leading man! Very memorable, and I like both her and Julie in this show equally!!

  • @kenitobaby75 Sadly, even if the performance were to stand alone without any comparason to anyone elses, it's still pretty awful. Not trying to be mean, it's just the way it is. At best, she's a shoddy, "cabaret" sideshow version of her mother Judy Garland - and Judy was only good when she was early on in her career.

  • @Mestisamo careful the gay mafia doesnt come after you for those last couple comments. Judy was genius for better or worse till the bitter end.

  • @shpidoinkleboy I have to dress like a hot tranny mess just to go out...or Kathy Griffin, which is sort of the same thing. ;D

  • @shpidoinkleboy LOL, Will and Grace reference! You're awesome!

  • uggg - awful. sad and looks like something her mother would have produced on her show. On 2:13 she goes off key LOL

  • What on earth are you dickheads going on about? She's got a lovely Liza interpretation to this! Yes, she's not Julie Andrews, but she plays this sexy and edgy.

  • Normally Liza is quite good, but this is just awful! Though that might not be entirely her fault, i still can't bear to listen to it again - i'm off to listen to Julie's version again... and again.... and again!

  • I just can't watch her anymore.

  • i like liza minnelli despite her issues, but this was just a plain awful performance; likely as much the fault of the stage production, the awful choreography and the soulless musical arrangement as anything.

after watching this dreadful offering, i had to watch the clip from the movie (which i confess i am practically obsessed with) to get this nightmare minnelli performance out of my consciousness!

  • she didnt hit the appropriate note at the end...she does a good job, but its not the same.

  • This song belongs to Julie......and NO ONE ELSE!!!

  • I ADORE Liza to know end. But she is no Julie. <3

  • Liza looks red-hot in this number and cannot imagine Julie coming close...the audience is loving it!

  • mmm like better the Julie`s version, thi sis so like cabaret

  • Sooo agree with you :D plus... I love Julie Andrews

  • OMG that was fabulous.....!!!!!!!!!!

  • I don't know I like Liza in this. The tempo is much better then when Julie performed this number. She doesn't seem to be under the influence here. I did see her not right in the Rink in '84 where we couldn't even understand what she was singing and where I learned later there was some tension back stage because of it. Who else could hold a stage with Sinatra, Davis and Martin? Besides her mom!

  • Liza had a snoot full when she did it. She couldn't even finish out her run cause of her drinking. Julie's understudy had to finish up for Liza.

  • I don´t want to hurt Lize but I think she wasn´t the right for that role Julie was such amazing in this and when i now see Liza it seemed Liza did it very bad

  • I think it´s dificult to make it good when Julie Andrews did it before!

  • How interesting to see Liza Minnelli in the role of Victor/Victoria. Wish they had better stage video of this production. Wouldn't mind seeing the whole thing on professional video myself. hard to play the role during Julie Andrews sick day i bet. oh the pressure. But Liza looks like she is having fun. My goodness, how did she remember every step and every mark to stand on?

  • Minnelli took over the role when Andrews left Victor/Victoria

  • No, Liza played the role for a month temporarily while Andrews was in hospital

  • i love the irony of Liza playing a drag queen...

  • liza took the part as a favor to Julie whos voice was giving her problems. This song was written for Julies range not Liza. Liza still pulls this off like the true talent she is. LIZA WE LOVE UOU!!!!!!!

  • well - to be honest - as I love Liza - she didn't even try to pretend to be a drag-queen. thtat's so sad. But thats what this story is about.. Liza tried to be as much female as she could.

She is great - she is marvellous - but not for this piece. sorry

  • I love Liza Minnelli, but it's clear that this song was written for a totally different voice - it simply doesn't work as the showcase it is supposed to be (as it definitly did for Julie Andrews). Not Liza's fault, though.

But it's very interesting to watch. Thanks for sharing!

  • Thanks for posting - I saw this in 2/97. She was fab as always!!

  • Este video no le hace justicia a Liza.

  • I HATE THIS COSTUME ON HER! wow she looks terrible. Ok i get the whole "new star/new costume" thing, but how-bout one that doesn't emphasize every flawed part of her body? this is Velma Kelly's dress on a woman who has no business trying to fit into one.

  • People are saying that Liza danced much better than Julie, but Julie was 60 by the time they did the show, and Liza was only 51, thats only 4 more years older than julie when she made the movie back in '82!

  • yea and after watching this vid and the whole show online i happen to think Julie did better.

  • oh. did she come to the show after julie andrews throat operation? I didn´t know.

  • Not very believable purely because she has not got Julie's range!

  • @Babsfanalltheway I don't know, Julie was never a particularly convincing man because she's so obviously a soprano. Liza has that belty alto range. I mean, I adore them both, but I'd be more willing to believe Liza was a drag queen and that Julie was a female impersonator, if that makes sense.

  • @bigtopbabe in Victor/Victoria the lead character is actually a woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman not a man pretending to be a woman... so to be honest and realistic Julie fits the role perfectly.

  • @Babsfanalltheway blah to you.

  • She is a total diva!!! I love her, she is the only one that can replace Julie.

  • the cast hated working with her

  • really?? how do u know?

  • liza was having personal problems then---and it is difficult for alot of casts to accept a replacement.I cannot reveal my source

  • The issue should never have been "accepting" her or any other replacement. As a professional, one should know that it's inevitable to replace someone. Liza WAS going through a tough time, but she was nothing but gracious and giving. Liza was and continues to be an utter professional with an amazing work ethic and complete devotion to her craft. She is a beautiful soul and working with her has been nothing but a joy and blessing.

  • liza does it much better dancer than julie guys!!!

amazing !!!she`s got the fosse style!!!!!!!!!!!

  • 2 things. 1, I think the reason that Liza isn't great in the role is because, yes, she has the lower range, but for the role, you need to be able to get into the higher singing range as well. 2, she's not Julie Andrews, and yes, the coreography is great, but where's the acting... in general the movie was much much better than the musical. There's so much more you can do with a movie... they should remake the movie... :)

  • i dont think her singing is good, i mean i love liza, but she does a total different rendition than julie..at least liza's coeregraphy is good.

  • Magdeleinemae, why do you feel the need to cuss her singing?

  • Interesting to see her version! But in my opinion Julie is much better in this role and has a lot better voice! But i do like this vid and think liza is fantastic in chicago!

  • Thing about Liza is....it's ALL about Liza....Similar to Madonna...

  • sucky video quality, but it's interesting to see minnelli's version

  • You go,Liza Minnelli!

  • I saw Toni Tennille in the starring role of Victor/Victoria. She was EXCELLENT!!!!

  • Liza is great in her own way, but this was no the part for her. Julie Andrews owns that part...although I like the way Liza "reavealed" her manliness at the end there lol!

  • Have to say a totally different version.. and this was Liza at her best in the role.. another version I saw she wasn't coherent at all and was dancing in a pair of fluffy slippers!!!! And she sang from high to low at the end instead.. very interesting!!

  • Julie is sooo much better!!! In my opinion anyway! I still think Liza did an amazing job at learning all the dances and songs but i just think Julie has that extra something!

    JulieAndrews153

    xxx

  • How cool to see a totally different interpretation of a song by a totally different kind of artist. And nice to see a proper dancer too!

  • it would have been interesting to see what liza would have done withe the role vocally at her zenith ('73 cabaret) It was fabulous.. funny how they carted her on and off while the "real" dancers came in and showed they're stuff but I might just be being a bit critical.. she danced a little... loved the ground where the cuties were doing the splits and humping the floor.... ooo to be that stage!

  • I like Liza, very much, she's good but Julie is far better it's her song

  • it ends well

  • My opinion Julie is the best!

  • yep

  • Sorry, but Julie does it much better -

    in my opinion.

  • agreed

  • i have to disagree i personally think JA was better although her voice may not have been what it was in the movie...she did after all around this time have trouble with it resulting in surgery!!!!liza is to belty with not enough build up b4 the belt!!!wereas with JA it seems to flow naturally...in saying this liza is a trooper to learn all the numbers in such a small period of time!!!!

  • Julie is far better!

  • I've heard on several occasions from various people who worked on this production on how impressed with Liza they were. They all seem to mention the same thing - How she picked up the dance routines so amazingly fast, considering she had little rehearsal time in covering for Julie Andrews. Liza is truely an athlete.

  • I was there on opening night. When LIZA walked out, she stopped the show in its tracks. Amazing!

  • thank you so much for posting this, do you have CRAZY WORLD??? if so could you post it?
