I can see why Stallone was inspired: he put heart and soul into that fight and had nothing left at the end. I used to go to his Deer Lake, Pa. training camp and I am a firm believer he won that 1st fight against Joe Frazier. No question. However, the punch Wepner hit him with, was a perfect punch. A body shot right on the upper rib cage. I'm an ex pro fighter and I can tell you that's a devastating punch. Ali was hurt by that punch and went down from the sheer force and power of the punch. actually I read a book called "facing Ali" THat one of my kids gave me and in that book Chuck says that he didn't really knock Ali down. I saw that fight live and it was a slip CLEARLY. Having said that I always liked Chuck. He really is a down to earth guy and very likable. But there's no way he knocked down Ali. Ali=G.O.A.T

Chuck was a hard hitter with a damn good chin but that's all he ever had really. The Ali fight was a showcase for Wepner fighting dirty. I can still remember no one calling Chuck on his flagrant rabbit punches. He threw more of them than any other punch. The ref said nothing until Ali complained repeatedly then retaliated, making it a point to show the ref, clearly. Ali got the flack instead of Chuck. It still ticks me off. I like hearing about it though, lol.
