This film was great... I can't imagine anyone even mentioning The Royal Tennenbaums in the same context... hell even the great Gene Hackman couldn't bring that film to life... but Catherine Deneuve and Mathieu Almaric in this one....
The Royal Tenenbaums is one of my favorite films of the noughties, but A Christmas Tale has it beat in certain departments - namely its characters, how they're treated, how their stories are resolved. Tenenbaums, like all of Anderson's films, is a feel-good fairy tale; its artistry lies in its conceived world - the details, visuals, music - not so much the complex characterizations. Best not to sell either of the films short in spite of the other.
If you're looking for an other very bright and very talkative french film made by the same director, you should watch My Sex Life... or How I Got Into an Argument (Comment je me suis disputé...(ma vie sexuelle). For the lovers of the french language and young french actors
When it comes to long intelligent conversation in French film, the director Eric Rohmer's films came top of my list. Rohmer's Clare's knee for instance, it's packed with philosophical conversations.
This is a great epic piece of french cinéma starring some of the best french actors (Mathieu Amalric, Catherine Deneuve, her daughter the beautiful Chiara Mastroianni and the not known enough Melvil Poupaud)
@nioosha Hab ihn schon gesehen :)) vielen Dank! Hast du ihn schon gesehen?? Hab ihn übrigens zu Weihnachten auf DVD bekommen, von einer Bekannten aus London ;)
Love the movie! I like that its a "Christmas" movie that I can watch all year. Its not really a strict Christmas movie like Miracle on 34th Street or A Christmas Story, it just happens to be set at Christmas time. Superb Film!!
I live in a small college town that is more interested in getting wasted every weekend than obtaining good, independent films. We lost our two independent theaters (they were bought by "churches" if you can call it that) so now there is nothing. I have been dying to see this film, so it is good to hear that viewers have enjoyed it. I would honestly drive to Seattle (8 hours away) if I thought I could actually get there without ending up in a snow bank.
I watched this film today at Pasadena Playhouse district. I thought it's going to be really boring. but it turns out it's a really touching movie. The story line is very smooth yet vivid. It makes you sad, makes you laugh, makes you warm from the inside. I recommended everyone take your family and watch this great christmas themed movie. FANTASTIC!

I( saw the film today, the most tedious two and a half hours since my recent root canal. Less expensive, true, but about as much fun. Yes, I normally love French films, but this one was a turkey, IMO.
Getting rave reviews! Love most of Deneuve's movies. I enjoy most foreign films more than American films..the actors here in U.S. are a bit overrated for me. Not all but most that everyone gushes over are so terribly ordinary.
Can't wait to see this. Friends in France have seen it and they loved it. Would you happen to know if it's going to be released in the cinemas in the UK? If not, I'll have to wait for the DVD... Thanks for posting.
Its supposed to be released in Canada on the 28th of November; if we are getting it I am positive there should be a cinéma playing it in the UK; I'd suggest calling or checking the website!
What's the song/band at 1:55? Is it just a jingle for the trailer? I can't find it on the movie soundtrack.

Melvil Poupaud is a great actor too. He was a star of Francoise Ozon's A Time To Leave and also Eric Rohmer's A Summer Tale.
