Yes the guitar is tuned differently. As a guess I would say open D (I'm probably wrong) but that is the easiest to play in. It's DADF#AD, so use a tuner if you can't get it by ear. It's quite easy though if you tune it with your other strings.

DADF#AD. If you wanna tune and learn his licks he's about 1/5 step flat. Very nice playin' dude. Keep it up.

Lil' extra info. That tuning is called 'open D' meaning that if you play all the strings open it makes a D major chord. I tune 'open E' for convenience (tho it can be hard on your neck because of extra tension)

Sure it originated from there, but I've yet to sit through a show which was purely calls..Straight african? Well for his slide instrument I don't see him using a bow and stick to play, so I would say yeah, the blues is a southern tradition which roots lie in African field hollars, which spread up the Mississippi to Memphis, Chicago and so on. Learn the blues.
