Are boomers through? No X,Y, and the Millenials will be servicing their debt and ignoring their own for the rest of their lives. The boomers are going to live a long long time and will eventually be sucking up 50% or more of all productive income through social security.
Tom, thanks for sharing your conference postmortem thought.
I think any good marketer will never ignore a vast demographics as the baby boomers (and their discretionary funds☺ yet, at Chris Anderson's universe listening to his intern makes perfect sense giving the target audience of Wired Magazine.
Wow, there's one I've never heard before. I think he's brilliant and humane. I see you're from Slovenia. His thoughts about countries like yours is very positive; poised to be leading members in the EU and models of how to recover from a terrible history.
I haven't read any of his work, but based on book reviews I've read on Amazon, he seems like a typical "pax americana" neocon, who supported the Iraq war from the start.
The terrible history of Slovenia you talk about was caused by countries who thought they had "god's right" of closing the gap between the "functioning core" and "non-integrated" countries by military means some 60 years ago, using Barnett's terminology.
drummerboi, embracing new worldviews is the biggest challenge any of us have, especially when we're not even aware we have them. After all, fish don't know they're wet.
as with most things, i agree with most of it but of corse not all of it. That is the nature of opinions.
But i have to say to the comment above... you cannot attempt to create a flaw in his argument by picking apart his examples. these guys in bussines, corse they talk to guys born in the 60's. It is the priciple of actually moving forward and not looking back, stop fearing the future and embrace it!
Well, I think that you are making things way too simplistic. These guys don't just 'do' what the interns say. They listen and then, based on their experience choose what to act on. To 'not talk to anyone born before 1960' is a catchy little sound bite to get the attention of people born after 1960 by stroking their egos.
Funny, that wasn't the way Anderson portrayed it. Granted, he clearly doesn't do EVERYTHING the interns say, but his point was, he had to trust them on things more than his own instincts.
As for Barnett stroking egos: not if you know Barnett. His point was clearly that old models aren't up to new realities.
make me think... i'm still not sure if there are any real obvious devides...and not just an ongoing mushy kinda evolution...as there always has been.. luddites anyone? we've been here before.. but thnxs.. interesting..
Listening to young people I do feel there are divides. Being boomers makes it hard for us to see them. What's a "waste of time" for example? Ask a youngster. Surprising answers.
i mean no disrespect whatsoever by this... in fact it's a compliment.. but in some ways you defeat your own argument. You come across willing and able (excited) to move into an unknown future without fear...whilst suggesting there are poeple out there who are not, and that they cling to a status quo that is, as we know, never static. Are you sure there's really a boogeyman?
blighty, I see peers daily who steadfastly resist moving away from status quo, all the while watching the dynamism that's swirling around us. I'm personally excited by these developments, but that's just a personality quirk. It's the dominant mindset of the generation (its zeitgeist, if you will) that I'm pointing towards.
but you're right about the 'waste of time' thing.. young people i talk to seem more purpose driven.. wheras when i was young..doing anything related to a constructive future was deemed a 'waste of time'..
they have done a lot ... but like those with too much success, one does become complacent ... stagnant. It is time for the youngsters of today to provide the fire for change ... so desperately needed.

A warmonger can't be humane by definition.

Pretty good video. I don't really look at the world with dollar signs though.

Thanks. I think dollars are an important part of what makes the world go 'round...not everything, but an important thing.
