OK, I just looked up the rules. The 30-foot wingspan limit is a killer. Still, an L/D of 5 seems like it should be beatable. Good luck (and skill) next time. I realize who is involved here, and I have confidence that your team has the necessary talent.

The world flugtag record is 195ft set in austria in 2ooo. The US record is 155ft set in nashville in 2007. This flight was 109ft. We did build this glider with the intent of breaking the record and we would of had it but a slight crosswind picked up the left wing on takeoff pointing the glider towards a group of spectators boats. The pilot had to stall the glider and dive it in to the water to avoid hitting the boats.If the boats had been futher back we would have gotten the record.
