@flymajj yes - shame about the mix. Loco at rear due to 'operational' reasons, I suspect. I don't suppose NR would permit the tours unless they had some means by which they could assist themselves in the event of breakdown.
@pjdscott they always have mixed rakes because most enthusiasts have no time for anything in br blue and think everything should be green or maroon! believe it or not, they are several of us who weren't born in the 1940's who like mk2's! not just that, but who wouldn't want a class 50 at the back? although a double header with all power units roaring would be epic!
@flymajj...If the stock is bought in from somewhere and needs to reverse while being positioned, it saves running RSG round the train..the other weekends London-Edinburgh, came from Southall hauled by 57601 (55022 DIT), which led the train into KX so was on the blocks, and then RSG was in position to haul it to Edinburgh (57601 DIT).
Honestly, why would RSG want a spare loco, she's got 2 engines and even a right old clank and fall to bits of one and she still kept going...Long Live Napier!
Shame really - that would've looked absolutely brilliant with blue/grey coaching stock instead of the mis-match of regional variants. Looked like it had been to the second-hand stall to see what was left!
a Deltic on one engine rather misses the point (and who would hang a Type 3 in front of ten Mark I's and a Hoover?). It's the disharmonics of two nine-cylinder twostrokes at never quite the same speed that sends shivers down the spine. My Lordzzzz!!
Certainly.Speaking as one who "lived" Deltics from 1978 - 1981 there was a set terminology among Bashers."Rancid" or "Plastic" would be applied to something like a Duff or a Tram, but the term "Dreadful" would be applied to a Deltic on both engines at full bore as in "Wicked" or "Shit Hot".Hope this helps. ;-)P.S "Dreadful" would be accompanied by much "Flailing" and "Bellowing"
I have spent many a Day at this location during the mid/late 1970s.When Deltic after Deltic would come flying through. There is a small Castle like structure just behind the Railway Station which was utterly perfect for
watching "all" the action.Alas the Foilage has grown so tall as to render this great site
Not quite, 55022 had an engine shutdown due to a fault, so 50049 was used with the Deltic. And to top it off the trip also had another EE loco added, 40145!!
Was at work in Gateshead was a nice day so popped over to Windmill Hills at lunchtime (overlooks KE bridge & site of GD TMD), imagine my shock at the unmistakeable drone on a deltic crossing to Newcastle and powering north through Manors, no idea this trip was on (lapsed trainspotter). Fab
Yet another railtour ruined by a ridiculous mix of stock.
nd why always another loco at the back these days?!

Only one engine????

Apparently! The driver shut down the other - I believe he was being cautious in case of a major failure. It still sounded magnificent on one!
Thanks for your comment...

@pjdscott yes a boring driver just using one engine as one was all that's needed for that load, I would have had two running all the same!

Quality video, although I'm intrigued as to why no. 22 is seemingly operating on only one engine?
Bellsview 4 years ago
Many thanks for the encouragment, Bellsview. I understand that no. 22 used only one engine to save fuel.
