You don't seem to understand-I wasn't referring to the displace filter, I was saying that GIMP is, in my opinion, superior to photoshop.

For a number of reasons:

1.Open source. anyone can develop a plug in, etc.

2.Very customizable

3.Free

4.Almost (note: almost) as good as PS in terms of quality.

Unless you are a professional (~5%? of people who use photo manipulation programs) GIMP is almost better than photoshop - mainly because it is free. The extra money isn't worth it.

@02Jc19 For the background, right click the layer and press "add alpha channel." For the floating layer, right click the floating layer in the layers tab and click new layer, and it will become a layer. Or dont copy and paste.

PEOPLE WHO ARE HAVING TROUBLE WITH THE PLASMA LAYER SHOWING UP WHEN YOU GO TO DISPLACE. The rendered layer has to have the same layer boundaries as the plasma layer. So go to your rendered layer and go to Layer<Layer to image size. That should make everything work

Aha! At first I couldn't get the render I cut out to do displace with the plasma, but i saved the render as a png file first, then used that to displace with it!

For anyone who want's to do this on photoshop, you just have to make the displacement map manually.

Here's how I did it:

1.) Filter > Render > Clouds

2.) Filter > Texture > Grain

3.) Ctrl + F until you like the speckled look.

4.) Save it as displace.PSD so you can find it easier.

Then when you are ready to use use the effect, you go to the layer you want to apply the effect to and the you go to Filter > Distort > Displace...
