Outstanding video Dave. I've only just started going through your youtube videos (from oldest to newest) This is by far one of my favorites. I have a young son and he will definitely be getting a drum liner in his personal pack along with his space blanket. He has a few of those hot hands hand warmers in his kit as well for areas too dry for fire. It also gives him the ability to tuck himself in his space blanket with a hand held heater if needed.
fantastic video and great lessons. just an idea, one piece of emergency kit i keep in my kids kit is a cheat walmart hunting orange vest. they are small and super visable. number one lesson i tell them is the moment that you notice that you are lost put on your orange and blow your wistle. it would help me to see them in thick cover.
This was the best of the vidz I have viewed so far. I actually think this would be great for an adult to use as well. The 50 gallon plastic bag was the fastest shelter I have ever seen built. I can't wait to get out in the woods and teach this stuff to my daughter.
Hi, I am a member of The Survival Podcast and I saw this video (and a few others of yours) there. Excellent videos! Please keep making the videos with your nephew. They give me good ideas to start teaching my children. Thanks for posting this!
This is really great to see. I have been teaching my son the same methods since he was 7. Great job Jamison and i'm sure the hard work you did will help many other kids also! Keep it up.
As a scout leader it is great to see other people looking out for are youth. when i go out to refine my kit and skill my son is right at my side every step of the way
Awesome video as always Dave, and good job Jamison, you did amazing! I have 5 nieces and nephews, I'd be interested in knowing what you think a kid should carry for kit, and at what ages you would begin teaching skills such as knife handling and fire making? Keep up the good work guys. Cheers
If I go into the woods with my son I always make sure he is wearing some bright colored clothes. So if he's not capable of helping himself, he can be spot more easily. Camo colors are not a very good choice most of the time and I wonder why people always wear that. It does look cool xD
Once, many years ago, as a scout leader, we lost a boy in the western Rockies. He went with his buddy to the top of a ridge and then, he thought, back down the same side. It was, of course, into another small valley. Once they realized they were lost, the boys screamed themselves hoarse, and then tried to find their way back. When we found them, safe but scared, they had walked 10 miles from camp. A whistle, a compass, and some know-how would have saved us all lots of grief.
You are a great guy Dave, for sharing this information with the novices.
It may save someone's life and at the very least it would make someone a little more comfortable, rather than spending a miserable, cold, wet night alone.
I learned the hardway on camp roll out after dark ...a fire ant hill launched a full assult on my backpack and myself ...wore spots for 2 weeks at least !!--so it's close to Halloween ,,big organ leaf bagz stock up ...GREAT JOB guys !!
Real nice! Great job Jameson ! Keep up the good work. You are fortunate to have an adult that cares about your well being. You will look back at these experiences and be so happy, Thanks
I am preparing to go on a 37 mile hike with my son the winter and this vid really made be think about all the things I need to get ready for as well a training my son.
5 stars just for the shelter, like Dave said an orange sheet would be ideal. A survival bag opened out in the same fashion may do the trick, and some kind of foil blanket would be a good addition for when it gets cold, reflective too. Loosing my kids in the woods would be a nightmare, having the piece of mind that they know what to do is immeasurable.
Dave, excellent video man. I haven't seen too many directed towards kids safety in the wilderness. As usual you are a pioneer. Keep up the great work.
Another thing to help avoid losing your kid while they're wandering, is to have them every so often, blow once on the whistle, wait to the count of 30, if they don't hear a responding whistle (you should have practiced so you can recognize your whistles) they need to start back right then.
I will be using this information and video with my cub scouts in their survival training. My guys are getting ready to cross over so they will be camping without benefit of mom and dad very soon and I sure don't want any of them to become a statistic. The information you put out is top notch and I will be utilizing more of it. Thanks again.
Wow- way to go Dave!! I have a "few" kids around here, and I teach them this stuff, but your live-in-the-woods-lesson here is MUCH appreciated, and will be added to my kids' lessons asap. S P O T O N as usual Brother! Your nephew is a lucky boy to have you in his life (as are his parents). I thank you sir, Pete D.---
Very informative, and great video. Thank you to both you Dave and your nephew Jameson. I really appreciate that. I will remember this lesson for when and if I ever have children of my own or ever go camping with the neices and nephews. Very good information on how to find your kids in the wild and what they need to do so that they can be found. Thanks I been wondering how you started to teach your children how to do this stuff at a young age. Very good.
with the whistling, is the 3-whistle - 60-second thing a generally accepted practice? also, if one were to hear three whistles, how does one reply/respond with a whistle?
Great stuff ! I l wish I was was took out camping and hiking when I was young. On a side note tho, your hair looks really dark in this video. Is it just the light ? Haircut ? I know my hair is darker after I get it cut. If you dyed your hair I am gonna have to make a joke or two :P
Great job Jamieson good tip on jamming the stick into the y of the tree. Listen to Dave he has a lot he can show you. As always Wildernessoutfiters is the best.
great video dave, from someone who carries a seven year old out learning the basics, almost the exact same thing i teach my son..a suggestion is i picked up an orange poncho for $2.99 i think. it says tennessee from the team but it packs in the palm of your hand and it is bright...hard to find orange bags here. also great ingenuity in putting up the shelter. what about a light bungee cord with tarp clips, really like to avoid the sharp stuff here too. again, thanks alot....good job..jason,Al.
Perfect timing on the whistle and the siren in the distance. :) A really good vid, I've had a hard time working with kids his age becuase I don't slow down enough. Is this going to be the first of many with your nephew?
The only change I might suggest is to spend a little and get an AMK Heatsheet- blaze orange, and it is just a sheet so you don't have to do any modifications. Or find orange/yellow/red can liners, but that can get tricky.
Awesome vid! ... Id love to train with you one on one! He's doing a good job! Liked the shelter, easy and its good he did it all by himself like that. Tell him to keep up the good work! Take care!
Dave this is a great video, not only do you teach your kids how to be prepared when a emergency arises, it is also a fantastic way to spend time with them that will stay with them forever!!! 5 stars
You both did a great job. That's good, Dave. Kids need to be taught these things. Especially with the way that they can have a tendency to wander off full of curiosity.
Awsome. Jammed a stick in the fork to hold the shelter. I love learning from kids, they allways show you just how much we over think things. Dave please continue the learning with kids, my 10 year old lightbulb finally just went off on what i have been trying to teach him. Thanks brother.
Now if only my nephew would put down the xbox controller for 15 minutes so I could teach him the same way. All he wants to do is learn about the fun stuff like about my guns and knives. Its sad.
i know some guys i know who have been hiking on trails and up mountains for years now and they still wouldn't know any of these techniques. Good job teaching your kid this stuff!
nice, 5/5 though i kind of disagree about the using a knife, iv used a knife since i was 6, and never got cut very badly. i believe that parents just have to teach their kids to be responsible and safe with them.
I believe you are missing the point, Jon. I think what Dave is implying is that under stress the child may not be so careful with a knife. The fear and angst of knowing they are lost may cause them to be rush and accidently hurt themselves. No doubt that all young woodsmen should have a knife to practice bushcraft skills with, but they should also know when and when not to use it. Sometimes kids may get a little over zealous and mistakenly cut something they might should not have.
Dave, very cool to see ya teach this knowledge to the kids...we gotta get our kids away from the t.v' and the video games and spend more time outdoors.

weight/space aside would the reflective blankets you sell not be a better option for kids to carry?
Turned in, it would keep them warm, turned out it turns them into one big shiny ball, which might be easier to spot from the distance.
