Still to this day no one but no one had or has a better lead out train, his boys would ramp it up and control the sprint from 8 - 10km out,........ not today.
@ 2:32 Umm, when you are a stud like Mario the blondes try to cop a feel even in broad daylight while putting on your yellow jersey for you... Ahhh, the good life.
really beautifull how his teammates are already celebrating long before he reaches the finishline, they already know nobody is going to beat Mario Cipollini
I would bet my life on it that Cipollini would win . Cavendish is fast for max 200m , Cipollini always started the sprint 250-300 before the finish. Beat that !
I think for race mind, explosiveness, talent and raw pace that cavendish is better sprinter especially with they way he can train hop like robbie mcewen used to which he displayed in the tour after renshaw was kicked out and the other big reason is that he can finish a 3 week tour and win on the final day
Damn, the sprint at 1.28 is de best sprint i've ever seen. Supported by such uplifting trance music, this video gives me goosebumps. Respect for Mario Cipollini...he was the best!!
Obviously a hell of a rider but he never finished the tour in all of his starts...Cavendish got through all the mountains and blitzed it on the Champs-Élysées.
Back in da day there was no lead out man, it was one on one sprinting, pure racing at its best. Mark can match his record, but he is nowhere close to Cipollini's power house.
@rsoreo savoldelli..what's the red jersey?? in italy he won the pink jersey..it's like the yelow one for the french.. savoldelli was one of the very few that never got caught using drugs, Cipollini downhill was a normal rider, he was a very strong sprinter but he always needed his team to build up the pace for him..cavendish instead..just goes.
@symba I remember that Savoldelli was Cipollini's teammate in Saeco in late '90s so they both wore red jerseys. If my memory serves me right Savoldelli was part of Train Rosso to lead-out Cipollini
larskk 101 a 1:22 is the sprint in San Benedetto del Tronto - Tirreno Adriatico in 2002 just days before the splendid triumph of Sanremo. And 'the most beautiful sprint won by Supermario technique ... sounds like a loose cannon! The quality of the competitors is a remarkable view of the involvement of speedsters who prepare the Sanremo and prefer to run in Italy than in France, Paris - Nice
Look at 1:22 . omg.... Now that's the best sprint ever seen... Plz show me a better sprint if there is..? But which race is that from? Giro? Or is it just a small race, because then it isn't that great...
@larskk101 was a giro! I remember perfectly watching it at the tv. Quaranta the guepard was also there, was amazing :). I think it was the last stage of that giro
Newbies don't see the big picture and what was really at hand in the last three years of Cippolini's career, the reason he won more sprints, the popularity.
.
Worse of all, no knowledge of Freddy Maertens. You want to talk sprinters....?
There have been others such as Van Looy, Basso, Van Poppel, Saronni, Planckaert, Vanderaerden, Steels, even Hinault. And while not in the classic mold, LeMond and Kelly demonstrated some exceptional sprinting skills.
i have tremendous respect for erik zabel's consistency.. 6 consecutive green jerseys. however.. cipo is my favorite sprinter of all time, and is probably why im a sprinter today.
Well, I remember a certain stage in the Tour de France, where he was alone, quite behind at 300m to go, fighting with somebody, then made his way through all the others to win.
I have to agree his best victory was Gent-Wevelgem, totally not his style. That and the milano-sanremo in '02...However nothing beats the sight of the Saeco Cannondale train, it changed sprinting for good and is my enduring memory of 90's cycling.
1:45 was his best performance ever. Gent-Wevelgem. Closing the gap on his own in heavy winds. Working hard with the rest in the break and finish very strong.
