lol this is just a simple trick used to fool predators into thinking its a dangerous sea creature , many octopi have a great deal of tricks , this is honestly no where close to the coolest of them =)
Are you sure?! This is so weird/interesting - I've seen quite a few (granted, much smaller) octopi here in Florida, and the only times I've such behaviour is when the animal has been injured. Thank you for the correction.
Very sure. This species is an arm dropper (drops arms the way a lizard does its tail when disturbed). Wild individuals are often missing arms from natural interactions on the reef flat. This one though has all eight arms to the tips (best count at second 8 of the video). It also had no injuries to the body. This is a normal mode of escape by small individuals of this type of octopus. But thanks for keeping an eye out for video that involves harassed animals!
