You could also turn one on, wait 30 min, then turn on another, run to the room.
Funny thing, the answer I came up with when I first heard this one was the same as the one Day9 gave, but one I watch this, I somehow came up with a not as good answer.
@tripelon Use his example on pre-patch 4gates. The system isn't flawed players have to find a work around. He says it outright if there is a perfect solution, use it; i.e) pick metaknight.
@cliqueatnightvandal :s well,,,indeed using mk might be the best solution, but is just like the best known, what if there can be a solution similar with other circumstances? (characters, stages, strategies)
Wait a minute. The 36 joke has another flaw as well - technically both eldest and 2nd eldest daughter can be 6 years old at that point in time, but are not twins, with the elder daughter being a few days shy of her 7th birthday and the 2nd eldest daughter having just celebrated her 6th birthday, i.e. imagine the date is Dec 28 2010, and the eldest daughter is born on, say, Jan 01 2004, and the 2nd eldest is born on Dec 25 2004.
i paused it but it is retarded, the fact that the guy asked for information means nothing, because it doesn't prove that problem couldn't been solved with the first two facts that were given, it only proves that he was unable to do it, therefore he asked for another tip.
@beebobox There is no good explanation why 2,3 and 6 is the wrong answer, that would be assuming the last clue was of any importance, which is pretty retarded in the first place because the whole purpose of all this is to get rid of assumptions. Truth is there are several answers when you don't make assumptions and the riddle's explanation is tricking you into thinking there is only one.
@MathijsMoonen The ONLY reason 2,3 and 6 is wrong is because if it was right the salesman would not have had to ask for another clue. The numbers that add to make 11 can only multiply to 36 if they are 2 3 and 6. 13 is the sum with 2 possibilities to be broken into numbers with a product of 36: 6 6 and 1 or 2 2 and 9.
@Miketar2424 What I was saying is that you're making the assumption that the guy had an idea after the first 2 clues, when he could ery well be asking for another clue simply because he didn't know. It's in contratiction with the topic the riddle was supposed to illustrate.
@Winddragoon but the woman says that her eldest daughter plays the piano, not eldest child. If she had two daughters of age 6 and 1, the 6-year old daughter would be the "eldest daughter" even though there's also a son of age 6.
What was the question in the riddle with the salesman and the number 36? Was the question what number the house next door had or was the question what age her three kids were?
It didnt piss me off, i actually figured it out before you told me the answer. That one was kinda easy, But the one about the girl and the elevator is stupid cause it could be any number of things. But the lightbulb is more exact and is more a puzzle.
U can still have 2 children aged 6 that aren't twins. 1 just turned 6 the other is 6 and 9 months. Or 1 is adopted. Or they count 1 being a few minutes older
@userasdf Yeah solved it myself dumbering myself down but it got just as much flaws as the elevator one.. And the options you mentioned aren't the only ones.. They could also be unidentical twins(dizygotic) which means you could end up with a male and a female twin.
it's funny how people say idra should watch this, but let's be serious. If youre a king vs queen + king in chess, of course you'd resign. Yes the queen+king guy could mess up but at that professional level it's so unlikely that its not worth carrying out the game to the end.
The salesman riddle is weird because it could also be that the eldest daughter is 6 and 11 months, and she got knocked up two weeks after she was born, so the next one is 6 and 2 months. They'd both be 6, and there'd still be an oldest daughter. Unless of course you're actually counting 6 and 11 months as 6.9175.
@guitarnublet Hence why it's actually a good riddle. What you said and other possibilities I've read from other people are based on arbitrary information that you didn't get. This riddle doesn't use that bullshit.
hello im mr.troll... what if he had blink then the forcefields would not work haha day 9 you suck! (anyone get the making fun of the trolls thing i had going on there?)
Two Important things about the riddle he missed that are really important is that they are both presumed to be smart and that its the eldest child not daughter.
Interesting. That's what I don't like about League of Legends - people always think, the system is flawed. And the Company behing League of Legends (RIOT) keeps telling them that they are right by constantly changing things in the game. There is never a constant.. You can't go in depth towards perfection because the system is changing. I think it's sad when the game create itself thinks, that the system is flawed
@DonYagamoth To be fair, by simple logic you can see how the removal of dodge chance is great for something that has such a large professional scene. Chance is skill less, and the things it can do to you, especially in the early game (mostly crit chance) can be devastating, for no other reason than that 4% chance. Early game if an enemy crits with an ability you can lose 25%-30% of your HP alone, if you planned on laning with Regrowth Pendant but that catched you, you're dead. :<
@Thecrazyhide I agree with the removal of dodge. But what I'm talking about is bringing out a new Champion every 2 weeks while constantly (constantly!) changing mechanics. This game never runs for more than 2 weeks without significant changes.
Don't misunderstand me, I like playing it, but LoL wanting to be a competitive game, this mindset simply does not go along with constant changes.Obviously you want to remove broken things. But I'm perfectly fine with not every Champion viable.
@DonYagamoth I quit dislike the idea of not all champions being viable -- of course that would leave out a lot of them as a result, but for a competitive game I see every element on the game needing to be like that. Doesn't mean it can't appeal to casuals.
And yes I agree with the drastic changes, to the point where I've just stuck with Jarvan IV regardless and will refine him to the point where he works in a system that doesn't have all elements involved.
Not only can 6,6,1 work because two children can be born to one mother in less than a year, it can work even if you assume the two six year olds are equal in age because one could be male and therefore there would still be an eldest daughter. The "solution" also assumes the salesman figured out all the triplets and their sums before needing another clue.
@BILBOBAGGINS343 while you're right that the two children could be boy girl which will give u the eldest daughter that plays the piano (cant be the 1 or 2 year old kid) the clue already told you that the salesman did figure out that 13 is the answer
why
cause he need to ask for another clue, cause if u add all the possible sequences, each result is unique except for 13. if it wasnt 13 he should already know which sequence he needs by looking for the number next door.
@Soranul replying to my own post cause i erased to much words in the first part that it doesnt make sense. i meant you are right that 6 6 1 still fits the eldest daughter plays the piano part cause of boy girl twins. thats just nitpicking to me though but true it should say my oldest child plays the piano ( the piano part is important since 1 and 2 year old cant really play the piano unless u consider them bashing the piano to be playing )
@Soranul gah i need to proofread better, oldest child doesnt work too if u nitpick too much, it should be oldest non-twin daughter plays the piano lol.
ps i wish youtube invent this thing called "edit post"
It never said "plays piano well." My 2 year old niece presses keys on my piano haphazardly. While it doesn't show any semblance of skill, it demonstrates some interaction w/ the piano, which we refer to as playing it. The phrase "playing piano" in our world tends to have an implied requisite that there's a certain level of skill required, though it's in no way defined as such.
@WhiteKite Besides, absurdity can still have its place in logical reasoning. For example, given the statement, "All cats weigh 10 tons," as some kind of postulation and the question, "So, how heavy is my cat?" the logical answer in this scenario is "10 tons". This is correct, despite our real world understanding that cats don't weigh 10 tons. To interject the real life idea that cats don't weigh 10 tons into this scenario would be incorrectly imposing additional details onto a defined system.
@WhiteKite haha i like that you nitpick on that part. really though no person will decribe that their child plays a piano to a stranger when all they do is interact with it.
remember that the setting is presented as a normal conversation between two people. yes its absurd that the parent asked the riddle to the stranger so if u want to nitpick on that feel free.
also why all the details are not given entirely for all eventuality cause the setting is a conversation.
The whole point of this episode is to abandon assumptions. What about this? You're asking us to ASSUME these people will act a certain way--the way we typically experience. Think of riddles and logical exercises as a kind of game. The delivery explains a set of rules, and you have to play along with the rules given to you. What you're saying is kind of like imposing another set of rules--maybe ones with which you're just used to playing--and expecting everyone to follow them too.
@WhiteKite Also, I don't have any problem with the absurdity of the woman asking the riddle to the insurance salesman. It's obviously just a contrived story device to set up the actual question. I'm pretty sure the "plays piano" is also a contrived detail, probably meant to throw people off. The elegant part of the clue is that people will probably fixate on the piano playing, as that's a concrete detail--though the real meat of the clue is the overlooked admittance of an eldest daughter.
The solution 1,6 and 6 can also be valid. Assume the older six year old is born in January and the younger in November - the salesman visits in December. The oldest daughter is most definitely older then her sister.
I kept thinking the "eldest DAUGHTER" was a clue. So I never would have got the answer as the eldest out of two daughters could have been 6 while the lone boy was also 6.
Dear Sean, im currious as of late as to why you started breaking up your show into segments instead of doing the big hour+ long video's like you used to, does it have something to do with making it easier for people to pick up where they left off if they have to go somewhere and it doesnt "force" them to sift through an hour long video to get back to point A.
or is it something to do with youtube and timing. not limits. idk what the word im looking for but something to do with the allotted time
the main part that practically gave the answer to the insurance riddle was that out of all the sums of the three kids, only the number 13 was not unique. therefore, the insurance salesman had to ask for ONE more hint/clue.
@roji556 maybe in lower leagues..but the game is balanced for tip top players. and you don't see every single pro terran in the world doing nothing but mmm against toss. if it was truly op that's what would happen.
I have the hardest time excepting the fact that no system is flawed but i know it's true. But what do you think of this statement in terms of government? If you are living in a dictatorship or democracy or communism are these systems flawed?
@pyroVoid There's a difference between a game and real life. In a game or a sport or some kind of competition, the goal is to win at all costs (as long as you're playing within the rules, hopefully) and that's okay, because it's just a game. In real life, if the only thing you're concerned with is winning, you're kind of a jerk.
And there's a difference between something actually being true and you going in with the mindset that it is true. Assume it's not flawed until proven otherwise.
@labobo He then follows up that quote with "that assumption is wrong." In addition, the definition of ingenuity is: " The quality of being clever, original, and inventive" There is a difference between being origional and just not having enough information to provide the proper answer. With your logic I could give you the riddle of: What room of the house am I sitting in. There is only 1 answer and you have to use ingenuity to find out the answer.
@WarlordofSatrae The goal of a riddle isn't to guess the answer the person giving you the riddle wants. It is basically to provoke thinking and coming up with an interesting yet plausible answer.
In other works i'm saying he isn't clever and inventive enough to figure out a plausible answer.
A riddle is meant to be a mental exercise.
You can say a riddle is a way to trick you into using your head.
So mr missing-the-point, get it now or did i slap the answer too hard in your face ?
@labobo The riddle he gave of the girl and the elevator I could say that the answer was she felt like going to the 6th floor and walking the rest and for no other reason or I could say that she had OCD both of these answers took me 2 seconds to think of I hardly find that a mental exercise. When riddles are told they should give you just barely enough information that will force you to think yet come up with an actual answer not just whatever almost infinite number of answers pops into your head
turn one switch on, flip one of the others a bunch of times untill you hear a small pop, go into the room, 1 light is on, 1 light is off and one light has poped
semi-quoting: "the test was hard and every student thinks the same", in my school's case, it means that the students thought the exam was very hard but they actually all passed.....
@JonnyMosay Yes, write out all the possibilities, you will find that there is only 2 in which the ages add up to the same number, the fact that he NEEDS more information, means it has to be one of these 2, then that there is an eldest daughter eliminates an option (although people are challenging that fact that the last option is eliminated).
on the force field riddle - what about casting force field behind zealot, to push him forward faster? Charge doesn't seem to be up this early in the game.
@xPulse365 Not only that, but the twins could be a 6 year old daughter and a 6 year old boy, with the 6 year old daughter being the elder of the 1 year old daughter. Also, even if all three siblings were girls, the eldest 6 year old could still be 9-12 months older than the other, and still be 6, therefore still being the elder. The puzzle is broken, even though Sean doesn't realize it.
I've figured it out but it did take me awhile. I paused the video and thought for about 5-10mins. No way I couldn've done it without that. Seems pretty fair to me.
Tough riddle....quite complex as far as looking at all the possibilities... I think we're used to riddles that have a quick answer. You have to write / think out ALL the possibilities to realize what the answer might be...
Haha this brings up fond memories for me, my math teacher gave us this riddle one day and I solved it in a couple of minutes and he refused to believe it! He thought I googled it or something ; \ but I was proud anyways
PvP is fixed now? When did that happen and how did I miss it? I must be stuck in the Diamond twilight zone to where all the four gates were banished... Still every single PvP I've ever played (minus that one PvP where I had lost 12 times in a row and got matched against a gold... yeah...).
Ahhhhh that riddle was so annoying, in England lots of places have houses with number 13. My next door neighbours house was number 13 so didn't know what the fuck he was talking about. TT
Day9 you have made my day, really, your video's just make you feel better, anybody could watch your stuff, just makes you laugh think n belive in life, just makes you want to get out n do stuff ! :D
Because the third tip helped, it means that one of the options is 1*6*6. But what I thought was that the other option was 2*3*6. It works because if house number of the woman is 12 then the neighbours are 11 and 13.
The idea is amazing, but if MC and other P keep using it, people will try to find a way to fake it, and once you cancel, bam! 4 gate incoming.
There is no perfect strategy, it's always a cycle.
HyperOpticalSaint 1 month ago
6 and 6 and 1 works, a woman can give birth to a non twin within an year, it's very rare and not safe, but not impossible.
This means there is no answer.

I have the hardest time excepting the fact that no system is flawed but i know it's true. But what do you think of this statement in terms of government? If you are living in a dictatorship or democracy or communism are these systems flawed?
pyroVoid 1 month ago
@pyroVoid There's a difference between a game and real life. In a game or a sport or some kind of competition, the goal is to win at all costs (as long as you're playing within the rules, hopefully) and that's okay, because it's just a game. In real life, if the only thing you're concerned with is winning, you're kind of a jerk.
And there's a difference between something actually being true and you going in with the mindset that it is true. Assume it's not flawed until proven otherwise.
asdfrozen 1 month ago
@pyroVoid It's not the system that's flawed, it's the people.

The definition of riddle:
"A question intentionally phrased to require ingenuity in ascertaining its answer."
Did the riddle make you realize you do not have enough ingenuity to figure it out and that's what made you mad ?
Just be a man and accept it already, ms whiny
labobo 1 month ago
@labobo He then follows up that quote with "that assumption is wrong." In addition, the definition of ingenuity is: " The quality of being clever, original, and inventive" There is a difference between being origional and just not having enough information to provide the proper answer. With your logic I could give you the riddle of: What room of the house am I sitting in. There is only 1 answer and you have to use ingenuity to find out the answer.
WarlordofSatrae 1 month ago
@WarlordofSatrae The goal of a riddle isn't to guess the answer the person giving you the riddle wants. It is basically to provoke thinking and coming up with an interesting yet plausible answer.
In other works i'm saying he isn't clever and inventive enough to figure out a plausible answer.
A riddle is meant to be a mental exercise.
You can say a riddle is a way to trick you into using your head.
So mr missing-the-point, get it now or did i slap the answer too hard in your face ?
labobo 1 month ago
@labobo The riddle he gave of the girl and the elevator I could say that the answer was she felt like going to the 6th floor and walking the rest and for no other reason or I could say that she had OCD both of these answers took me 2 seconds to think of I hardly find that a mental exercise. When riddles are told they should give you just barely enough information that will force you to think yet come up with an actual answer not just whatever almost infinite number of answers pops into your head
WarlordofSatrae 1 month ago
@WarlordofSatrae Well D'oh !
Didn't i just tell you that ? I did say mental exercise.
He called it a riddle although i would never do that because i know what a riddle really is.
What he called a riddle is a gotcha-joke or made you a fool joke.
One of those things kids come up with and tell each other and that stupid "adults" misinterpreted due to lack of intelligence and/or proper education.
Really disappointing...

Insurance riddle:
I know everyone is talking about the insurance riddle and how you can have twins or two children within the same year...
But you can ''think outside the box'', so, what if the children is 1, 2 and 18? Or does that ruin the riddle by making one of them 18(grown-up)?
What if they are 36, 1 and 0?
Im pretty sure thats not legit though.
JonnyMosay 1 month ago
@JonnyMosay Yes, write out all the possibilities, you will find that there is only 2 in which the ages add up to the same number, the fact that he NEEDS more information, means it has to be one of these 2, then that there is an eldest daughter eliminates an option (although people are challenging that fact that the last option is eliminated).

About the insurance riddle, couldn't the two 6 year olds be boys, and the 1 year old play piano?
xPulse365 1 month ago in playlist More videos from day9tv 8
@xPulse365 "Eldest daughter plays the piano" meaning there are other daughter(s) that are younger.
jthart23 1 month ago
@jthart23 That doesn't mean that. That's an assumption ;D
Just because i'm the only boy my parents have, doesn't mean i'm not their eldest son.
xPulse365 1 month ago
@xPulse365 Not only that, but the twins could be a 6 year old daughter and a 6 year old boy, with the 6 year old daughter being the elder of the 1 year old daughter. Also, even if all three siblings were girls, the eldest 6 year old could still be 9-12 months older than the other, and still be 6, therefore still being the elder. The puzzle is broken, even though Sean doesn't realize it.
Zeldarulah 1 month ago
@Zeldarulah And also, if the neighbour's house is 13, then the woman's house is 12. That means 11 is also next to it, so 6 3 and 2 could also work.

Because the third tip helped, it means that one of the options is 1*6*6. But what I thought was that the other option was 2*3*6. It works because if house number of the woman is 12 then the neighbours are 11 and 13.
