One of the major problems with reciprocating engines was speed control. Today with more sophisticated mechanical or electronic govornors, the problem would be easily solved. .
I hope you don't mean you saw the steam turbines working. The one engine working is a steam reciprocating (like a locomotive) engine.

Absolutely beautiful engine and generator set, no need for reverse. It looks like human engineering at a high point in development.
