  • I hope you don't mean you saw the steam turbines working. The one engine working is a steam reciprocating (like a locomotive) engine.

  • In the early 1970's in England, during the Arab oil embargo, a similar engine was fired up. It burned coal. An engineering student did studies as to the efficiency of the unit, and it was discovered that the unit could produce electricity at competitive (1973) rates. This is an enlighting video

    One of the major problems with reciprocating engines was speed control. Today with more sophisticated mechanical or electronic govornors, the problem would be easily solved. .
