  • @MrRobertJameson no that's not funny it's sad and that's the case because both of them had been smokers most of their adult lives she had grown up around minning dust and he had driven race cars for 40 years which at the beginning were lined with espestos

  • @CosmicDingo You're so right about htat especially now a days when most actors can't even handle a 4 1/2 month stint on broadway let alone a big dramatic film like this. Paul played this so well because he was the exact opposite in real life. so much so that Patricia Neal who plays the maid in this harbored a crush on him from when they met in 1956 until her death in 2010

  • @caligirl5285 It's funny that Newman and Neal both died of lung cancer.

  • @RichardElden Awww I dunno, man.About this time, Brando had a nervous breakdown, and decided he hated acting.

  • Few leading men would choose to portray such an open asshole.

  • @cosmicdingo Especially one as jolly and easy going as Paul Newman.

  • this is one of my desert island movies. One of my top 5 movies of all time. PERIOD!

  • @brandomeow I agree. This is my favorite movie.

  • I never get tired of this movie.

  • I've never seen newman in a bad movie, a true legend.

  • @TheGodParticle Try watching The Silver Chalice.

  • That's the way I am so my Father said.

  • i love this movie

  • For absolutley no reason i bought the movie yesterday and watched it last night.

this morning i found out patricial neal died.

R.I.P patricia. She was perfect in this movie.

  • @aknowneemus

    Damned right she was.

  • jjj

  • Rest in Peace, Paul. You were talented, gorgeous and amazing.

  • Life happens. Shit happens...sometimes it leaves a big mark on a man. I feel for Hud. So much internal struggle and pain. He loves his father, but his father cannot forgive and love his son. Just sad. I always leave this film feeling hopeless...sigh

  • häsoiu

  • Great flick!! Newman was a real movie star!

  • This is my favorite film of all time and an absolute masterpiece of cinema: casting, acting, direction, script are all pitch perfect, from a great book by Larry McMurty, "Horseman, Pass By." I've seen it so many times I can't count. Saw it at the AFI silver on the big screen last year and couldn't talk for awhile after I was so struck. Kudos to Martin Ritt and his brilliant cast for such a superlative performance.

  • I could not agree with you more. Too often people hand out superlatives when describing films that can't eat the dust of this one. No disrespect to Poitier, but he can thank goings on in the larger American culture for how he was able to get the Oscar away from Newman that year. This is a film all men should watch, particularly at a time when they are attempting to clarify their values and the directions they would like their lives to take. Film is great for oh so many other reasons too.

  • Great movie from 1962

  • Greatest American Actor EVER. if you know movies you know that.

  • You damn right.

  • Correction: You're damn right.

  • One of my top ten favorite film ever. PERIOD!

  • melvyn douglas makes the movie

  • This is Paul Newman's greatest movie, the only one where I feel we slice through the gloss and get to the real man. Has there ever been a major movie star who made so many bad movies? Of course there's CAT ON A HOT TIN ROOF and HARPER, but not much more that are on the level of HUD, which is a brilliant movie from all involved.

  • Well every actor has his share of mediocre and even terrible films, but i don't think you're giving him his due on the great choices he's made.

Yes HUD is one of the best movies I've ever seen, although Newman isn't the best thing about it. But don't forget Butch Cassidy, Road to Perdition, or god forbid COOL HAND LUKE and THE VERDICT.

  • Thanks for your comment. I've always thought Redford stole BUTCH CASSIDY right out from underneath Newman, and LUKE has its moments; doesn't he more or less just make a cameo appearance in the ROAD TO PERDIITION? I think he was nearing 80 years old at the time of that one. I saw it, but it doesn't stay in my mind. I'll have to revisit it.

  • Just watched the confrontation between Newman and Hanks in ROAD TO PERDITION; you are right, WOW! I saw this movie when ti first appeared, but it doesn't stick in my memory like several of Newman's others.

  • well hey I'll make sure to see Harper and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. I'm making it a point to see Hombre, since Martin Ritt directed that one too. But the Verdict is one of his absolute best.

  • Try Absence of Malice with Sally Fields.

  • great movie. " your pretty smart, i think im pretty smart too"

  • so you think long hot summer, color of money, the sting, nobody's fool , the hustler, slap shot, and butch cassidy are what???? newman is hands down one of the best of his generation.

  • The Silver Chalice, The Young Phiuladephians, Rally 'Round Tne Flag, Until They Sail, From The Terrace, Exodus,

New Kind of Love, The Pirze, What A Way To Go, Secret War of Harry Frigg, Rachel/Rachel,WUSA, Winning, Efect of Gamma Rays, Mackintosh Man, Towerring Inferno, ... have I left anything out?

  • but surely his better and best roles far outweigh those of his lesser ones? no? he wasn't too shabby in the hudsucker proxy or empire falls either ;)

  • Please carefully re-read my original comment: "Has there ever been a MAJOR MOVIE STAR who amde so many bad movies?" Of course his finest work outweighs his inferior work; I still maintain that HUD is the best thing he ever did as an actor on screen, and he was GYPPED when he didn't get the Oscar for it!

  • What about Richard Burton? Seems for every 1 great film he made (i.e. Spy Who Came in From the Cold, Wild Geese, Taming of the Shrew), there were 5 lousy ones (Exorcist II, Klansman, V.I.P.'s and too many others to name). HUD is great, but The Verdict is just as good

  • You're right.

  • Burton never could act at all.

  • @JuanMacready , Oh, no way! He was great onstage, he had one of the best voices for Shakespeare ever. He just had bad advice when it came to films. If he'd kept his drinking and womanizing in check he'd have had a much longer and better carrear, and he'd probably be where Michael Caine is today in the variety of film roles.

  • I wish the talentless wooden overacting ham Burton had died of lung cancer like Paul Newman. Still, at least he only made it to 58.

  • @jennifersman tahw tuoba drachiR ?notruB smeeS........ no dost witst dat ik dat kin!!!!!! silst wo tinke fen: mmmmmmmm mar ik tink: HARSESS!! druk ma gau op "Tribute to Paul Newman"en DON SILST SJEN!!!!!!!!!

  • @billyguns2 I would say try to find a major movie star who made less bad movies as a percentage of his output. I personally have at least enjoyed his performances even in movies that weren't that good.

  • We all feel like Hud now and then. I Love the housekeeper, God she is good in this film. All the actors are perfect for their roles. Makes me long for Texas.

  • Hud is my favorite movie. There is not a single false note in it..great cast..superb acting. And unlike most movies nowdays it has a moral. If U treat people shabbily you end up alone and unloved, like Hud. And there are so many memorable lines in it, like "Sometimes a man gets as hard as his arteries" and "The look of the land slowly changes because of the people we admire" both said by the old man --Melvyn Douglas. And Newman has great lines like: "My momma loved me, but she died!"

  • Well he was bisexual himself.

  • My fav movie.

  • One of the greatest films ever made............

  • Hud explains why Newman got lung cancer.

  • I hate smoking but wasn't Paul like 80 some years old??????

  • Paul makes good ranch dressing

  • the part where they shoot the cattle is so sad ... i felt sorry for the old man

  • READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A new bio appeared on amazon very recently. Its called Paul Newman: The Dream has Ended! It is by Jenifer Demers and its the first bio written on Newman since his sad passing. I just got the book today and its very good!

  • The looks of a Greek God, superb talent, buckets of charm, and a heart as big as Africa.

Love you, Paul. Thanks for all the joy your films gave me.

  • well, he looked american, not Greek(I'm Greek), but he was definitely a good-looking man and a brilliant actor!

  • Greeks, like Americans, come in many different packages. There is no one specific "Greek" look. What I meant by that expression was that he was a beautiful male. In English speaking countries, calling someone a "Greek God" is a huge compliment.

  • yes, I know what you mean dear...perhaps, he looked like those Greek statues we admire...but he was fair, right? Anyway, he was a very good-looking man and I know he had a good heart too...his eyes tell me so...:-)

  • Yes, he was fair, and so are some Greeks. In fact, last year, I met what I thought was a Swedish chap, and he was a blue eyed, blond Greek, and divinely handsome. Drool! What part of Greece are you from?

  • The place where Lambrakis was murdered was in Ermou,Thes/niki.

  • greeks have typically dark features, dark eyes and dark hair.. they're like italians and turks, a different brand of whites.. if anything paul has classic german features, blonde hair and blue eyes.. turns out he mom has a slovak

  • Yes, feder, the majority of Greeks would be Mediterranean types. Paul's Dad was Jewish...let's face it, we're all a mixture, aren't we?

  • Dereniti, is that your pic on the profile? You remind me of Irene Papas. I adore her! Ignore my question- I now see you're in Thessaloniki.

Habve you ever seen "Z", the film about the murder of Dr Gregory Lambrakis?

  • yes, it's me, thank you. :-)

To be honest, I have the DVD of the film you mentioned, but I have never watched it...I'm now addicted to old British movies...Hitchcock is one of my favourite directors!:-)

  • Your pic is lovely. Do watch "Z" when you can -it's brilliant, and Irene Papas is superb.

  • Thank you very much dear, I will definitely watch it! And, please, you should watch the following two movies(if u have not watched them already): "Rebecca"(1940) by Hitchcock & "The Astonished Heart"(1949) by Antony Darnborough...they r both worth seeing!!!xxx

  • Thanks, Dereniti- I ADORE "Rebecca"!! I haven't seen the other, so will watch out for it. Have you ever seen "Dead of Night"? (1945) a British classic?

  • No dear, I haven't but if you say it's worth watching, I will definitely see it soon!!!Thanks!:-)

  • Dereniti, please don't read any synopsis about "Dead of Night"- it might spoil it for you as the end is amazingly eerie..Great cast- Googie Withers and Michael Redgrave et al. Do see if you can watch it at midnight, with a storm and howling wind outside.......

  • thank you my dear,,,I'm sure I will love that film!!!

  • Dereniti, you will, I can promise!

  • Paul Newman was what a movie star was. He was never in the tabloids. He and Joanne Woodward were a class act. He gave so much with his Newmans Own popcorn and salad dressings. Everything he did was real. He was a genuine good guy. My mother went to high school with Joanne. Greenville County High. She used to tell me that she would walk down the hall real proud carrying her books, her hair falling down her back. I love you Paul Newman, and have always respected you and Joanne.

  • RIP Paul. You have left behind a great body of work which will be cherished by all your devoted fans. Vale, Mr Newman.

  • WHOAAA... I thot that was Matthew McConaughey, but, THIS guy's got his SHIRT ON!

    A Complete Icon.

    RIP Paul Newman.

  • My all time favourite from this great actor.

You stand tall amoung the best of the classic cinema. Farewell beautiful man!

  • This was his movie and one of my favorites only because he was in it!

  • Yes, he was alltime a cool guy!! RIP, Paul

  • RIP Paul :(

Now we have one less great man in the world.

  • Newman was good... he was very very good... RIP Hud!

  • RIP Mr Newman...one of the best

  • RIP to a GREAT man.

  • RIP Mr Newman :(

  • paul newman rocks

  • excellent movie, Paul Newman is the man

  • A great movie and YES the big screen will be good or a Drive-in.

  • Excellent film! Thank you for posting this!

  • The father/grandfather gives a monolog about "adired people" I would love to here that again.

  • Sorry, I meant admired people

  • Amazing film. Newman is the best.

  • This happens to be my all time favorite movie!
