  • old 60's truck

  • was that an elephant sound in the start?!

  • Never will forget the FIRST air starter I ever heard ...I was a kid riding along with DAD. The driver sat up there waiting for me to cross right infront of his radiator ...then hit that LOUD air starter. I almost crapped my pants and he is sitting up there in that seat laffing! Great video, thanks for the memories.

  • If its all the same to you, I'll drive that tanka, I'm the best chance you got.

Look no deals, i wanna drive that truck allright,

  • If there is an EMP will it still work?

  • To the person asking about putting an air starter on a car , yes it has been done. My father knew a guy who had one on a Holden (Aust GM) race car many years ago. The compression the motor had used to kill the old electric starters. So the solution he used was just that. I'm talking a LOOONG time ago, and on a race car. Impactrical for day to day use but I'd guess

  • R models are, in my opinion, the baddest Macks.

  • 2 stroke or 4 stroke ?

  • Nice truck, how many kms does she have?

  • Whats up with you aussies and air starters?

  • What is the average fuel consumption of this truck????

  • those aussies;)

  • i thought it was a Detroit Diesel 8V92

  • what's its engine?

  • @GordonFreemanD40 Mack Thermodyne V8 rated at 375hp.

  • shes a real beauty

    Too bad eh

  • mabee a silly question but why do aussy truck have air starters rather than electric

  • HOOOO EEEEEEE chug chug chug

  • the paint scheme on this tractor reminds me of that of the "Crowbar" fleet, out of El Paso,Tx., a mail haul operation using exclusively Mack R's.... Huge privately owned operation. Anybody remember them? Their trucks had HUGE custom tanks so they could make their entire run w/o fueling.

  • holy shit! an air starter! haha. havent seen those on youtube yet. ever. this was my first. good video. and nice truck. =)

  • this may sound like a stupid question but what are those wheels called that you have on the truck?

p.s. fantastic looking rig you had

  • @SemnteX Are you referring to the spoke (spider) hubs and the demountable wheel rims? Thanks for the comment, wish i still had her.

  • @danegerous88 yeah i was referring to the front wheels, only reason i ask is that i do a bit of 3d modelling and was inspired by your truck, and wanted to re-create it on computer. just wanted to know what the front wheels were called so i could find some reference pictures.

  • @danegerous88 another name for those wheels is daytons.

  • @SemnteX bult rims

  • @SemnteX they are made by Dayton

  • @SemnteX YOu mean the kind of wheels?

    These are "trilex" wheels

  • nice truck..............wonder what kind of mileage it gets compared to the modern ones.

  • First time i ever heard an air start ... cool :)

  • I used to drive a freightliner with air start running a cummins. Dang thing was in the passenger side of cab and had a freaky safety pop off valve. That thing would let go and dump all the air in the cab; every bit of dust and dirt would wind up in the air and me hanging my head out the drivers door gasping. I would get a kick outta scaring someone walking in front of the truck and wait for it wait for it; then hit the start valve. They would jump straight into the air and come down pissed.

  • That mack like in PIXAR CARS,

  • Awesome... Purely Awesome!!

  • i like that mack

  • Is it possible to mount an air-starter on 6syl straight engine in a car? The sound from the air starter is great and it would be fun to have it in a car instead of a eletric starter. Not everyone have that if possible :)

  • @Monza24vR6 Don't know if it could be done. Finding or modifying one to fit your car engine I think would be difficult and then you also need an air reservoir tank, hoses, valves and a compressor to replenish the air in the tank. Maybe possible, but a lot of work and not practical.

  • @danegerous88 I still belive this is possible, the air reservoir tank, valve, hoses will be the least concern. If I get ahold of one I wil try to finish this projekt. Have you any sites to recommand with air starter?

  • @Monza24vR6 The standard air starter brand that most every North American truck uses is Ingersoll Rand. I would start there.

An air starter wont burn out like an electric and you can jump yourself from the pressure in the tires (using a special hose or multiple hoses from multiple tires.). A great yet loud starting system

  • @lordtaw Thanks :) I will take a look at it.

  • @danegerous88 Any idea if an airstart would work on a 2 stroke jimmy?

  • flashbacks of 'maximum overdrive' HAHA!

  • how much torque@rpm on dat baby? :D

  • @MegaZsolti 1080lb/ft @ 2200rpm (1465Nm)

  • @danegerous88 thats high rpm. lolz but nice mack truck

  • @MegaZsolti Yeh I stuffed up. Should have said 1080lb/ft @ 1600rpm.

    375hp @ 2200rpm.

  • @danegerous88 Np.

  • At first i didn't know if this was a tank or a mack truck, then i realized whats the difference.

  • Can two-people fit comfortably in that narrow cab? Anyway, gotta luv that baby blue!

  • @LibertaerUeberAlles Yes two people can sit in the cab. Doesn't leave much room for anything else though.

  • does this remind anyone else of maximum overdrive :D

  • What a beast! I love it.

  • Aussies are fly folk--they drive around with their mudflaps on the FRONT...

  • How exactly does an air starter work?

  • its missing the concrete mixer lol i love the the old macks the e7 was a good motor low revs climb anything

  • gotta love the air starter ... long as you dont blow a air line lol

  • reminds me of mad max 2 lol

  • A Mack simular to this one started up while i was filling up my truck at the gas station (it also had a diesel pump for semi trucks) and i almost jumped into my trucks bed! VERY loud! lmao

  • ok this might sound stupid if your out of air how would you start it then

  • @GundamKnight07 The same as you would if you had an electric starter with flat batterys, you need to get a "jump".

You need an adapter that will mate up with the trailer brake service airline off another truck and re-pressurize the starter tank, once you have enough pressure (100-120 psi) away you go.

Airstart trucks are only capable of getting about 5 seconds of cranking before running out of air.

An alernative, altough very time consuming, is to use air out of ALL your tyres,

  • @GundamKnight07 Two ways. First if you can get another tractor to pull near you you would hook its emergency supply line (red hose) to a jumper glad hand near the air starter tank to get "jumped". If you are in the middle of nowhere you would have a set of "jumper hoses". They would allow you to use the air pressure of your tires to fill the starter tank. So you can actually jump yourself with an air starter, provided you tires are properly inflated.

  • love that sound

  • wat hp is the motor?

  • 375hp @ 2200rpm

  • THIS is a truck:-D

  • Good old r Mack you haven't had your a kidney blow from a pro boxer till you've drove one down a dirt rode

  • @laramie4x4 Or a Chicago railyard.

  • I love these kinds of old classic I think 1980's semi trucks especially this excact model of truck this Mack truck of what you have here in your video ("Mack R700 V8 with the Air Start Up") thank you for this video I wonder how much a truck like this would cost though.

  • Amazing start up. I've traveled on a Mack like this

  • Dane, some would never believe the work and some of the loads that old girl hauled in her early life........I hope youre looking after her.

  • Sorry for this question, but why have the Trucks in Australia often an airstarter and not an electric starter?

  • @robertwa1975 Mainly Mack have air start, however others can get them as an option. They are handy because you can deflate a tyre into the start tank and get yourself going.

  • @robertwa1975 Mack have used air starters on their trucks over here since the B models of the 1960s right up into the 1990s. It is a good system compared to electric but probably a bit noisy for this 'politically correct' world of today.

  • @danegerous88 especially in america where PC is fucking everything up

  • WAT A FUCKEN BEAST!!! i love r macks and a v8 powered 1 is a bonus

  • Does the 6 cylinders Mack Air starters fits in a NTC 444 Cummins? Its for my KW

  • @alex189100 Not sure, but I know the six and V8 Mack engines used a similar air starter, an Ingersoll-Rand 150BM mounted LHS on the six and RHS on the V8. I think it is a universal type starter so fitting it to your Cummins might not be too hard.

  • Two days ago a saw a vehicle that would haul that tanker.

  • nice looking truck u good there, love the air start

  • nice, i havnt heard an air start since i seen mad max the road warrior

  • Didn´t even know that they had those in trucks!

  • @DESSLOCH101. holy craps! it's freakingly nice to hear such a starter! pls. take note: @ 0:03, the sound of the air starter can be mistaken for a howling dog!

  • @DESSLOCH101. holy craps! it's freakingly nice to hear such a starter! pls. take note: @ 0:03, the sound of the air starter can be mistaken for a howling dog!

  • @T3HBassMasta:

Agreed. That would scare the crap out of me too. Make me jump 5 feet in a parking lot.

  • thanks

  • is this the type of truck used in mad max 2 ????

  • Similar but not the same model Mack. MM2 used a Mack R600. The R700 is a bigger truck with a longer bonnet (hood). They both use the same cab.

  • is it a 2 stroke diesel?

  • No mate. It's a 4 stroke V8 diesel.

  • thanks for the info :)

  • @urbandestruction some Macks did use Detroit diesel 2 strokes. some also came with Cummins motors but the majority of Mack trucks have their own motors.

  • @MattytheDem thanks for the input :) that would explain why 4 macks out in my town sound diffrent then the other and there the same truck model from what i know

  • so is this the same model used in the truck film maximum overdrive ?

  • @danegerous88 was it the R models or the DM's that had the off-set cabs?

  • The DM and the U series had the offset cab. I'm an aussie and over here we just got the R models.

  • @danegerous88 ok ,THANKS !!!

I saw the left hand driving like the US, and i thought u were in the US

did the I series look like the R's?

  • look at the video again. RIGHT HAND DRIVING. Their is a passenger on the left and the driver on the right as you can see the steering wheel on the right. The passenger moves in the video and the driver stays still is why you may have thought that was the only person in the truck and he was the driver. AND what do you mean I series? never heard of one. R and RW (Superliner) and the newer CH series, Granite, Titan... (I am not listing all I know) What is an I series??

  • sorry, I didn't see that, i didn't look so closely.

And I meant to Hit the U button but i accidentally hit the I button.

  • The DMs,but my dad had an old U model and that had the offset cab too.

  • @thissitesucks74 sweet!

  • American trucks are great, not like that we've gor in Europe.

  • @Zayjug American roads are also great, not like our roads

  • actually its very common for larger diesel engines to have air starters. much easier to deal with considering the on board air system for brakes and ride.

  • thats different! but awesome

  • an air starter would scare the poop outta me if a truck started as i was walking past it. i guess its because im used to normal electric starters

  • Love these old Macks. This one is fixed up real nice. :)

  • haha cool, its a normal version of the mad max truck

  • Very awsome rig!

  • wait hold on that things starter runs off air pressure, holy shit thats sweet

  • @andy72xbox Oh no! The battery is dead! HOOO EEEE vrooom vroom vroom vroom.

  • @DK99824 congrats for making a point on a 1 year old comment

  • @andy72xbox :D

  • That air starter reminds me of the movie Maximum Overdrive-when the tow truck tries to run the lady over....LOL

  • Notice the steering wheel is on the wrong side of the dash, so this is most likely an Australian truck.

  • love the RM700 painted it black ad duck on the bonnet

  • ahah like Convoy the movie XD

  • Damn! The airstart is so awesome =) Much more exiting than an electric starter

  • Oh man, gorgeous truck...Must be an Aussie..only you guys have shit like this remaining down under. Mack has macho written all over it!

  • how exactly does the air start work? im gonna guess and say its just a pneumatic motor like you would find in an air tool at a shop. but bigger

  • An air tank mounted on the chassis (rhs between fuel tank and rear fender) stores compressed air. Push button in the dash opens a valve allowing the air to transfer from the tank through a large hose to the air starter motor which has vanes inside which spin from the air engaging the starter.

  • so its sort of like how exhaust pressure turns a turbocharger?

  • kinda but with about 100-180 psi.

  • think of it as a massive air ratchet

  • That's pretty cool, I never knew that!

  • R models. Indestructable and idiot proof.

  • Now theres! a truck that was made to last!

  • Looks like the truck from mad max 2

  • Awesome Old School Truck !!!

  • my 78 fuel truck was missing the muffler on the air starter.... if you started the truck when folks where walking by, they would literally jump over the hood

  • sweet air start

  • MACK is the best there is!

  • i didnt kno u could get a visor 4 one of those

  • yea macks are very popular in australi. ive been there a few imes. awsome country and people. v8?

  • i love those old air starters they were awsome and to a guy my dad drove saved his life to a guy broke into his truck and they were fighting and he hit the airstarter and it scared him off he only got shot in the arm so air starter are good for savin lives to lol

  • Single stack on the left, got to be an Aussy

  • If your truck wears its mudflaps on the front, you just might be Australian.

  • Yeh mate, good guess.

  • so true

  • this motor have the air starter? how does it load him of air?

  • Yes, it uses air stored in a reservoir, which you can just see mounted to the chassis behind the rhs fuel tank. Press the button up on the dash and a valve is opened on the tank allowing the stored air to reach the starter by a large hose.

  • very good question

  • most of the Mack V-8s had dual exhausts

  • not necessarily depending on which v8 they had in them and what they were made for etc. the dm and rd 800's all had single side exhaust up to the right unless someone spliced and all

  • that was the weirdest startup i've ever heard xD

  • i think its with air pressure

  • just really weird

  • Air powered starter motor.

  • funny I work for ralphs and food 4 less, We used to have about 6 of old old trucks that used air starter. 5 old white gmc with 9 speed and 1 old mack with 5 speed. sadly we no longer have them after they been sold to another, and end up getting newer truck. I missed those good old air starters that really fun to scares peoples.

  • those air starters are awesome! its funny startin those up in public, it scares the shit out of some people LOL!

  • I see by the location of the steering wheel it's most likely an Australian model. That sound takes me right back to when I was a kid and Dad was leaving for work at the crack of dawn ... The neighbours always hated him parking his Mack R600 in a residential area. That bulls roar of a starter only irritated them more.

  • nah its us model drivers side is left side

  • I bet that is soooo slow...

  • wait till some1 walk by it and scare the fuck out of em, btw very nice mack

  • HAHAHA! that would be halarious! I wonder if a R600 starter would fit on a 1994 LT1 Corvette...

  • With a little fabrication work anything is possible

  • whore your self out to some fat chicks

  • oh no. lol.

    How about you?

  • its very nice... but its so stiupid to spend your money on something that you cant go for a pic nic..:)

  • THATS KINDA SWEET! =P

  • What year is it?

  • 1975

  • what year was the r600 please reply

  • Hey i love your Mack its like the one of Mad Max!!!

  • cool truck

  • BEAUTIFUL truck! 5 Stars for you!

  • ПРИКОЛЬНО!!!!

  • Love the oldschool!!! Everyonce in a while u hear one start-up and it usually freaks most everyone out, especially the rookies. Back inthe 70's it wasn't that big of a deal, but now it's awesome! Nice truck!

  • Sweet ass ride :-)

But i wonder why you painted the pre-filter bowl in white? Not that its likely to be "stuffed", but you wont notice if any of the blades in the bottom cracs.

  • Was painted long before I got hold of the truck and I would prefer it not to be, but I have checked it and it's okay.

  • 萌え☆

  • Moe what?

  • Started wirh Air Pressure???

  • wow i really have never seen that air starting thing work before it was really really cool!

  • No I don't believe so. It's only air same as the atmosphere. I think there would be more risk of fire with an electric starting system.

Plenty of old Macks with air start we're used as fuel tanker trucks over here in oz.

  • Hi,

I used to drive for Roadway in one of these.

I had to retire early due to health and my memory is a bit hazy. I've forgotten what we would do when the air was depleted. Would you be so kind as to refresh my memory?

  • It seems that I would fill it up using another truck.

  • MrRottenApple, another truck would be the most common method to recharge the air system but you could also use a portable air compressor. Sometimes these are mounted on breakdown vehicles and 4WDs. Some earthmoving plant have air systems you can tap into and you can also use your own tyres. Just pump them back up after the engine has started.

  • Much obliged, Dane. I saw those methods mentioned in another of your videos.

Now & then, I get a bit nostalgic & each time, as time passes, a little more is forgotten. I developed Diabetes & a heart condition & may have experienced at least three very, very mild "borderline" strokes.

My heart's pulse sometimes will race 160 bpms then sink like a cannonball to around 30 bpms instantly. The sensation is alarming & you wonder if you're about to check out. Hope you don't have retire early like me

  • revenant, the air starters used on macks is made by ingersol rand.

  • Damn, those air starters do look cool.

  • Dangerous88, is that the R700L? long bonnet version, or is it the short?

Its the same model in Convoy, but she was a 285coolpower, over dubbed with a detroit8V92TTA, damn yanks, but you can hear the old maxidyne in some shots.
