What is so great with this video is the number of swings that we see in full speed. Too often we see Hogan's swing in slow motion so as to analyze positions. The magic of this Hogan lies in his rhythm and timing. This is one of the best examples (Snead was another) of a classic "no-nonsense" swing-- step up and blast the ball! In order to get to that point in the game, it takes an infinite amount of time with a club in your hand. Hogan always said that 24 hours was not enough time in the day if
"Stinger." Please. Don't use dumbass Tiger Woods language to describe what a guy like this was doing. It was a lowish fairway wood into number 13 at Augusta. If Hogan called it a "stinger," it's a stinger. If not, it ain't--at least not when he's hitting it.
To clarify: I don't mean to be disagreeable; it's just that I kind of chafe at mixing terms that seem to connect 1) a guy who threw himself across his wife's body to save her in a head-on crash with a bus, and 2) a guy who humiliated his wife and children by sleeping with every cocktail waitress and aspiring porn actress he could get his hands on for years. Not questioning Woods' level of skill; it's just that there's more to being a champion golfer than that.
Just a reminder that this compilation came from the 'Ben Hogan Collection' produced by McTee's Champions. Glad everyone likes it. Good of texasflood to post with great music. I really like SRV!
on the range before players teed off in events i heard they often would take a minute and watch Hogan hit balls. The guy who told me this is a pro at a small golf course i play and he said Hogan's ball flight compared to the other players was like watching a pro and a 10 handicap. Hogan paved the way for future generations to understand the mechanics and every aspect of the one plane swing. I often wonder what the game would be like today if hogan didnt return to the game after the car crash
I really didn't want to make a big deal about this with the music selection-I love SRV and Hendrix, don't get me wrong. I just wouldn't have put any music with this video. Hogans swing was like listening to an orchestra in itself-that's all I was saying. It's an anti-left swing, you have to give him credit for that.
I was just answering your question, with a scientific wildass guess as to why he chose Voodoo Child. I wasn't trying to be cynical, just giving an opinion. With a username like "texasflood", I have guessed that he is an SRV fan. It's one of SRV's greatest hits.
@MrKmanhooks1 Are you stating this because of the lyric "if I don't see you in this world, maybe I'll meet you in the next one"? Everyone will die, some more soon than others. Unfortunately Jimi died young. Voodoo Chile was written to be a positive song and has roots back to greats like Muddy Waters and Robert Johnson. Jimi's passion and playing on that song is magical and worth sharing with the world. There is a reason why many of the greatest guitar players in the world cover this song. :-)
@texasflood54 Hey. Great compilation of swings and great tune as well. Thanks for posting! Next time consider Hendrix's extended live version off Electric Ladyland. Then we'll have 17 minutes of Hogan swings instead of 7.
@MrKmanhooks1 I am assuming that, texasflood54, just happens to be a Stevie Ray Vaughan fan and a Texan. It may be coincidental, Both Hogan and Vaughan are considered to be immortal with their lasting impressions of the legacies they left behind. One was from Ft. Worth, the other from Dallas, both worked tirelessly to perfect his craft. Each had their own unique style and both can never be duplicated. Regardless, the tune is very cool, and the swing is just as fun to watch.
@texasflood54 Since, I am a Texan, and a Hogan and SRV fan myself, it was the only conclusion I could come up with. Thanks for posting this compilation, I watch it on regular basis. I go to the range and play this song on my MP3 player while hitting balls too. I really enjoy watching the clip at 3:02 - 3:09, thats a great view for a full iron swing.
@xxxMrSuspendedxxx GLAD YOU POSTED THIS..yes, although Trevino does not get the credit he deserves for his technical insight and his swing is not perceived as"pretty" both have that inevitable pre-swing rhythm that implies the shot is already hit..there is always the cliche of Mr Snead being the rhythm king , natural golfer etc etc.Hogan did all his thinking and analysis before he went out to play, after that he played , like Trevino ,purely by feel .
This is fantastic!!! Makes me want to go out and shoot a low score! As an avid golfer and a student of Ben Hogan's swing, the combining of Hogan's hypnotic swing and Vaughn's mesmerizing interpretation of Jimi's Voodoo Child is an unbeatable and inspiring video! WELL DONE!!!
funny how one of the best golfers to ever lived basically does everything in his swing they tell you not to do these days.. is it becasue they dont want you to be good, are just wrong, or? Ben, wabbles, cast, hinges.
@catcher. He could drive 285+ with a balata ball, steel shaft, wood head. Imagine if he had a Pro V1, graphite shaft, 360cc head. Or imagine you hitting a balata ball, steel shaft, wood head.
The swing is awesome, but I wonder if it would work in this time. Look how low his hands are in the top of his swing. I don`t think you can hit more then 250 yards with a swing like that, and the golfcourses are a much longer these days. The top-players now hit over 300 yards!
Two Texans and masters of their craft - Ben Hogan and Stevie Ray. I would love to watch each of the segments in entirety. Lots of priceless footage here. Loved the shots at 2:19 - 2:23 of the caddies shagging each shot. More than a few got tagged by Hogan during the 1000's of hours he practiced. Glad I found this...Thanks for posting!! Dig it out of the dirt.
gotta love 1.02... the pro in the red sneaks a lil peek at purity... commonplace, i'm sure, at the time. then at 1.05 the guy in red has disappeared, lol, back at the clubhouse having a lil' snort while hogan grinds on.
I am a huge Hogan fan and I love the SRV music put to it. Wish me luck in the Spartanburg County Amateur(South Carolina). I am 56, and have hit probably 20,000 range balls in the last 3 months. I will be playing against some top notch golfers, but I will be invoking Mr. Hogan's Spirit!!! Thanks for the inspiration!!!
some of the footage of iron shots looks like a stack and tilt swing -straight right leg , flat backswing and the high holding finish -an absolute master who used different swings for maximum effect
If there is one thing average golfer can take away from Hogans swing - is to watch his PIVOT, meaning how he loads against his right leg. PERFECT PIVOT- that is where the power is.
Great video of the best ball striker ever! Love the music choice. Notice in some of the clips of Mr. Hogan warming up before a round, the other pros stop warming up themselves to watch him. Respect.
For a long time instructors taught students to have the feeling you were “sitting” on a bar stool. I always believed we should have been teaching people to feel as though you were “leaning” back on a stool. The last thing you would ever want to do is sit in golf. Sitting will cause the golf club to swing too level to the ground in the downswing, and you will have a tendency to hit the ground behind the golf ball. w w w (dot) golferbreak80 (dot) c0m
It amuses me how great players make the golf swing look so easy and effortless but when the rest of us do it, well, you know....nice video but interesting music choice!
lol whos this guy radrm who clearly hasn't seen much or studied much of Hogan :P Hogan took the club way past parallel in his younger days before he was almost killed in a car accident. After the accident Hogan was not as flexible but still able to produce tremendous power and his ball striking was unbelievable. Jack Nicklaus was asked if tiger was the best ball striker he'd seen and said no no Ben Hogan easy that says it all really the guy was a genius and remains a legend.
