Police officer was at fault because he failed to yield and what was with the lights coming on just prior the crash? Another officer abusing the system.

If you all want to know what really happened I happen to know, as the officer was passing this intersection a pedestrian trying to use the crosswalk from the left side ( off camera ) was almost hit by a driver making a right hand turn on a NO TURN ON RED, the officer saw this and went after the person 1. for illegal turning on red 2. almost striking a pedestrian in crosswalk,so before you all make jokes about donut shops and what not he was trying to protect a civilian and uphold the law,his job

@JVPRCNG that's actually wrong as me being a law enforcement officer we use a code 2.5 which states to use lights when at intersection and turn them off when leaving the intersection, of course he should of stopped but people should always be alert for law enticement and fire rescue vehicles.

But that's not the point- cop is "lit up" prior to crossing into the oncoming lanes and for an oncoming car doing the speed limit, they should be able to stop w/out conducting a "panic stop". Depending on the distance and speed the vehicle whom hit the cop car was going, that would have been avoidable if the cop car 1) had his lights on in the first place or 2) waited...like most cops dont like to do anyway.

@JVPRCNG I'm an EMT and we're always ALWAYS told to stop and give a second look before we go. We use the lights and sirens and wait until the other vehicles actually stop before we go. We can't assume that they will stop. This officer was probably in a big hurry and wasn't thinking at all.

The onus is on the person making the left to ensure he/she can do it safely, no matter if sirens or lights are on. The LEO made an unsafe left turn. Emergency vehicles are supposed to stop at an intersection to make sure traffic stops and then proceed.

@daltoni9 The police car, turning left, still needs to check if it's safe before proceeding with the turn. Even though he did turn his lights on, I doubt the other driver - probably going 40 maybe 50 - had enough time to yield to him.

Officer should have waited for the cars to stop before going. He officer is at fault for failing to yield. Just because he has his siren and lights on doesn't mean he can pull out of traffic.
To anyone in doubt, just traced the intersection based on the street signs, and accidents involving police at that intersection, (by public record) the police was deemed AT FAULT, for any morons that don't understand, that means that the cop was found to be guilty of not following procedure by not slowing to make sure that the way was clear and safe before proceeding.
That officer is a moron you always stop before proceeding into an intersection, what sucks is that an accident happened which never should have, guess it was a good thing you had that camera in your car.

I had a similar accident with a state cop. He pulled through traffic (no lights or sirens) admitted guilt for causing the accident to his superior. 8 mo. later I was charged with reckless driving and speeding through a construction zone and ordered to turn in my license until I paid for damages...I spent a year fighting it. What a Joke. fwiw, when making your written statement have the officer and a witness sign two copies. One for you and one for law enforcement to disregard!!

But In some states, the law requires an emergency vehicle to STOP before

@JVPRCNG R U Blind? cop is "lit up" at 0:28 and technically prior to the actual intersection of both streets. But that's not the point- cop is "lit up" prior to crossing into the oncoming lanes and for an oncoming car doing the speed limit, they should be able to stop w/out conducting a "panic stop". Cause of accident=on coming driver not paying attention. If it would've been an elephant instead of a cop the driver should be at fault for failure to stop/yield. Cop got a wake up call ! :)

@JVPRCNG They don't have to stop. All other vehicles must yield right-of-way in the safest manner possible. The officer can proceed at his discretion, using good judgement. Oh, and by the way, emergency vehicle operations codes are not found in the driver's hand book. All the book will tell you is that you need to yield the right-of-way.

We are also required to slow, even on Green lights, and Clear an Intersection due to drivers turning into our path from the Intersecting street. Lights and Sirens DO NOT GIVE YOU the right of way. @svt89 His emergency lights were off when the car was in the camera's view...then he turned it on. Depending on the distance and speed the vehicle whom hit the cop car was going, that would have been avoidable if the cop car 1) had his lights on in the first place or 2) waited...like most cops dont like to do anyway.

@JVPRCNG I'm an EMT and we're always ALWAYS told to stop and give a second look before we go. We use the lights and sirens and wait until the other vehicles actually stop before we go. We can't assume that they will stop. This officer was probably in a big hurry and wasn't thinking at all.

The onus is on the person making the left to ensure he/she can do it safely, no matter if sirens or lights are on. The LEO made an unsafe left turn. Emergency vehicles are supposed to stop at an intersection to make sure traffic stops and then proceed.

To anyone in doubt, just traced the intersection based on the street signs, and accidents involving police at that intersection, (by public record) the police was deemed AT FAULT, for any morons that don't understand, that means that the cop was found to be guilty of not following procedure by not slowing to make sure that the way was clear and safe before proceeding.

I had a similar accident with a state cop. He pulled through traffic (no lights or sirens) admitted guilt for causing the accident to his superior. 8 mo. later I was charged with reckless driving and speeding through a construction zone and ordered to turn in my license until I paid for damages...I spent a year fighting it. What a Joke. fwiw, when making your written statement have the officer and a witness sign two copies. One for you and one for law enforcement to disregard!!
