Much respect for Sambo. YEs it is mostly Judo and JuJutsu (leg locks and most of the illegal Judo techiniques). Most Sambo players have ranking in Judo. What amazes me about Russians is that they can take any martial art and they can test and extract the practical techniques by practising on people on the streets..I love how sambo preserved most of the Judo throws and leg locks, which tell me that the samurai broke the art of killing down to the laws of motion and body mechanics

I am a 2 stripe blue belt under Relson Gracie, and I and guys at my gym asked him about it, and he clearly stated that their dad ( Helio) MODIFIED (not invented) the techniques the japanese (Maeda) taught to his brother (Carlos Gracie Sr.). I am not trying to make anybody on here mad but I just wanted to clarify this BJJ vs JUDO business as I love both arts and I think it is silly that people bicker instead of enjoying them.

Now that you've totally diminished yourself, let me talk to you about the history of Sambo. Watch Human Weapon (Sambo), goto Wikipedia and read there...Sambo was a combination of different arts and styles. Yes, about 70% of Sambo is from Judo but the rest are from folk-style, Greco/Freestyle & Catch Wrestling.

@judoman98 thats true but its not entirely judo,several regional styles wrestling are also easily observed in sambo and some use a jacket as well.
