I usually love when music is played a bit "too fast". But there I myself find the "standards" for this piece too fast, as played by Gould and Richter, where as Shiff and Tureck are a bit too slow. Perfection is so hard to reach ^^
I believe Gould is best playing Bach (and incidentally to those of you not familiar with Katchen, Julius Katchen for Brahms ... cant help spreading the message of this greatest of all Brahms pianists)

Gould and Richter are great at this prelude! Schiff is quite good! I'm not so sure about Tureck, she plays it a bit slow, but these performers are all very good pianists, especially Gould and Richter!
I like the evenness in GG's RH, but dislike the oddball accents. Not a fan of Schiff, but appreciate some of his use of articulation. The Richter seems to be the closest to my ideal interpretation, but less precisely done than Gould. GG rules on technique. Tureck's performance has amazing subtlety and emotional impact, though, and is definitely the one I would prefer to listen to repeatedly if the choice was forced.
Gould OWNS the cadenza-like passage at the end-- arpeggiating the last chord is a masterful touch, the timing is perfect--especially how that suspended 7th appears and gets resolved at precisely the right moment-- I can't listen to it played any other way
Listening to the pianists playing the same piece back to back is like putting Babe Ruth in a lineup with 4 little league kids and asking who has the most potential to knock it out of the park. Gould All The Way.
Actually I think Schiff's approaching this prelude with too caution, not for the tempo, but for the caracter of his redention. The same for Turek, but she's of another "era". My votes go to
Very nice idea. I think the comparisons are supposed to be about revealing more about the music. Not scoring points or ranking. Agree it necessary to hear Fugue too. More comparisons...
Gould probably wouldn´t give a damn about our opinion and Tureck would be absolute darn sure that she was the best, but in my opinion 1st is Gould and a close 2nd is Richter. Thanks for posting.
@scluna44 the only reasen you liked Schiff the best is because the audio was more open sounding and sounded more damp which made the song sweeter and easier to digest. Not because of the actual performance.

Gould is easily the best one, the man is a musical genius. His keystrokes are precise and perfect. You hear every note clearly.

My first choice is Tureck: her slower tempo invitates to explore and contemplate.
I would put Richter next: though he is too fast, he manages to convince by the
drive, unity and logic.

Gould for me. Even though I think Schiff's and Tureck's interpretations are too slow, I prefer Tureck's after Gould.

I was at first horrified at the tempo adopted by Gould, but his precision won me over. My next choice would be Schiff.

Glenn Gould first, and
Edwin Fisher second.

since it is a comparison and not a competition I found each one of the marvellous interpretations.
the most impressive are those of Schiff and Gould.

Fischer=most interesting, good tone
Richter= good tempo, lil straight forward
Gould= luv him but he does better with other ones particularly b-flat and a-flat major, b-flat minor=no one can touch him on that
Schiff= a bit preoccupied
Turreck= like a lady wearing too many jewels and perfume
You can really judge these pieces without their accompanying fugues which may shed lite on why they play this prelude the way they did

I'd have to say my favorite is Schiff, even though i'm inclined to favor Gould. I was impressed by the dynamics Tureck achieved.

I'd go for Schiff this time eventhough
I'm not a fan of his Bach's recordings.
I like him better when performing Scarlatti
but that's just a personal taste not a
rating.
Excellent posting,thx for sharing !
