Game set and match! Quality of voice you are born with. You can train it to perfection but the tone and quality are with you from the beginning Cossotto has a texture - a focus- a velvet like tone yet brilliant . Even when she pushes the voice the tone remains Zajick's voice, though flexible has not this golden texture and tends to get shrill and sound shouted when pushed. I heard Fiorenza sing live in 1970 as Santuzza . Her's was a voice to be heard in the flesh
this is all true. However Zajick's technique has gotten better as she has aged, where Cossotto's vocal production started to suffer towards the end of her career. I also believe that Zajick is a more flexible artist, capable of doing a wider variety of roles. Both women brought/bring incredible gifts to the stage..Lets celebrate them both!
Brava Cossotto!!!!!!!!!! Cossotto for ever !!!
I like the color of Cossotto's voice the best among all these mezzos...even more so than Zajick's. I would say that Zajick's voice has a lovely quality, but her diction is poor compared to Cossotto's (not just the French/Italian difference, given that she sings O mon Fernand, but I think she squinches some of her vowels too much for my taste).
Cossotto is also one of the most involved singers I've ever heard in the roles she assumes. I'd say that I'd give her a 5/5.
Cossotto's acting has been criticized but it isn't all that bad in here. I just find it hysterical that she has no problem dropping the character the second she finishes the final note and widely embraces the ovation. The voice, epitome of the spinto mezzo-soprano, incisive metallic tone not to everyone's taste, but I love it. Now, was it the conductor's idea to cut the cadenza? Not good... BRAVA 5/4
Got to agree - she's just too pleased with herself at the end! Great performance though and I personally love her voice. She's great with Callas in La Gioconda - where i first heard her voice. 5/4
Listen to Stignani, Barbieri and Simionato. At that time both the cadenza and the second part of the cabaletta used to be cut (not only in "La Favorita" but in most of the italian opera). Don't forget Cossotto became a "world star" in 1962 at Alla Scala when she replaced at the last minute Giulietta Simionato.
I like the voice and the singing - but I am not clear about how to differentiate singing/characterization. What does it mean "she really is in character"? - If anyone can help me.
5/5 I wish I could hear this voice in theatre. Few other mezzos excite me as much as Cossotto. A bit old fashioned in style but I immediately noticed this is someone who know's what she's singing about. The words make sense.
You know, this has never been my favorite voice. BUT, this was really really good (apart from the nonsensical cut in the cabaletta that ruined the line). She sounds gorgeous. 5/3

A bit too much verisimo for my taste, but she really is in character and that final note. A 4/5, definitly.
