yes and buckeye too. they could of cut up those not so nice looking ones instead or just converted the engine rooms of these ships to being more computerized to cut down the number of men needed instead of chopping up classic lakers into ugly barges.
It is an awe inspiring sight to see a ship going in reverse and then turn around and go forward and steam out to sea.I use to live in Owen Sound Ontario and watch ships like The Willowglen and the Beachglen .The blast horn on the Beachglen sounded amazing so organic.I remember the Willowglen warming up ready to depart and from the engine room hatch you could hear the reciprocating engine turning over slowly making this awesome wining sound. This was in the early 1990's! So awesome!!!!
I love Lakers. We don't have anything like them in UK waters. What a great design for ding the job. They look like from another age, with a little bit of the look of US motorcars of the 1930s: very rounded and kind of elegant and 'plush'. Clearly they got the design right and it stood the test of time. Beautiful. The finest locomotives would have been the Mallet types that took the iron ore to the Lakers. I wish I could have seen that opertation first hand. US heavy engineering ROCKS!
@badgerattoadhall There are some pretty ugly ships around eh? The worst are those boxy car/ cattle carriers and ro-ro.s. Can you give me an example of an ugly post 1970 laker?
Oh yes, I nearly forgot to mention recent cruise liners. Compare any of them with QE2 and they look like giant, top-heavy boxes. I guess they have made cruising cheaper by stacking as many passenger decks as possible.
Man.... you are not kidding. That's one UGLY vessel you mentined there! It looks like the architect was trying to make it look awful.
If it is any compensation, without having a superstructure of any kind at the bows, Mesabi Miner is not a 'true Laker'. I looks like a massive blunt object with a super- structure kind of 'pumped-up on steroids'.
Do all post 1970 Lakers look that bad?! They should be restricted to night time passages, so nobody has to see them...
@SteffanLlwyd Yes that is basically the standard looking post 1970s built. They did build some smaller ships (to fit into some rivers of the lakes for unloading) but they all generally have the same-ish profiles. That what I mean, it losses the classic dual superstructure look. Google boat nerd fleet photo it will be the top one all US and Canadian flagged ships on the lakes.
@badgerattoadhall Thanks, there. It should be possible to make even massive ships look good 'n well proportioned. They just need to try harder... I'll go to that source you mentioned and take a look....
I was a deckhand on this boat from Oct 74 to August 75. My first and second mate Oct-Dec 74 was McCarthy and Pratt, now on the Fitz. This was the best and coolest job I've ever had. Bummer to learn she's a barge now. The food was AWESOME not to mention the experience.
i just saw the pics. horrible looking job ripped out the ships soul and cut off the pilothouse and then renamed it without removing all the references to reserve :/ its a crime

@SteffanLlwyd Yeah but the post 1970 Lakers are ugly and lack the elegant lines.

She was beautiful steamer. Now she had been gutted and is now an unproppeled barge with a notch with a tug shoved in there.
