ONe thing I would love to see is a sculpture that uses the different expansion rates of different metals to create a flower that opens by itself in sunlight and closes in the cold. On a cloudy day, with patches of sunlight and shade, it would seem alive.
@biclink that's one of the few great things about large, post industrial societies. We don't all have to be using the majority of our time to make pots and plant fields in order to keep ourselves and families functioning. There are plenty of people out there developing useful things, which creates plenty of time for people who want to spend all their energy developing things that are beautiful just to be beautiful, to do so.
@fastchapter Actually they're shipping tubes. Uline shipping tubes. They started out white and appear to have foil tape on them. I'm completely blown away about this because I have about 100 full size shipping tubes sitting 10 ft from me and I want to know how to build this. BAD. This thing is cool man!
I've been studying robotics and their forms of propulsion. So many have 4/6/12 servos just to clunk along awkwardly. So I looked to kinetic art and namely your pieces for inspiration towards creating complex yet simple locomotion methods with minimal motors. Thanks and keep up the awesome work!
Just saw this at Maker Faire in San Mateo... amazing! And if you stand underneath and look directly up, it's the trippiest thing I've ever seen. It's a shame there aren't any videos that show it from that angle.
can you tell me about any method to this madness? I know you must of found some kind of pattern to figure out how to organize those wires, and it must be a pretty interesting and complex pattern.
The thought that this required to turn the circular motion into the uniform wave using different routing and lengths of string.... hurts my head just trying to work it out, amazing
i didnt think it was really that great until the video showed it was just one motor hooked up to all the strings. i thought it was just on some sort of computer program hooked to every individual string
Very impressive work! Its such a simple concept, yet to even conceive of such a design much have been a lot of work.

I'm sorry , but just can't see the point. With the time and energy used to build this thing one could have made something useful.
