  • linux...so now we can use ipod for hacking too :D

  • @TheGprs69 Linux isn't strictly for hacking. I use linux because its simply works.

  • Rock box rocks

  • rockbox is better cuse more backrounds, doom, more games, better games, apps, demos, and its completely custimizable so it looks realy cool

  • lol, such a small screen

  • does anyone still have the ipodlinux files? if so could you provide me a link because i cant install linux onto my 1g nano. i think its a kernel panic but i dont know how to install the kernel help?

  • 19-2000 is an awesome song, i think it was on PGR

  • no Doom?

  • this.. is.. just... awesome!

  • when you put linux on the ipod, do you still have the default firmware?

if you use rockbox, you can choose which os to use on boot.

  • linux is so awesome i love u

  • nice LINUX!!!

  • this is sick

  • Have iriver 340 and Rockbox was loaded. Would like to know how to switch back to orignal. If you know how to use keys with Rockbox that would help. Never used Rockbox. Thanks Herb

  • shit every time mine starts up just like at 0:03 mine keeps scrolling down the blue text forever having a kernel panic. am i supposed to install a kernel? it keeps saying kernel bug at 2753 or something. can someone please help me?? i have that EXACT SAME NANO its 1st gen 4GB white

  • What next? Gentoo on a Toaster?

  • @OldTimeyJunk Or possibly Fedora in a refrigerator o.o

  • the is the lamest ipod i ever seen

  • @rocknrolldude1989 I don`t think it`s an actual ipod... Maybe a chinese imitation...

  • i thought the original ipod OS was unix based too (as in linux)

  • @dynastyflygon it is

  • Lol at the game "steroids"

  • I had so much fun modding the hell outta my nano 1stgen. damn, i miss highschool.

  • wow, that's very cool.

  • XYNTA

  • ВЕЩЬ!

  • @andreykrasnov

    LMAO

  • How did you accomplish such a feat?

  • man, that would be so cool to have on an iPod!

but would you still have the iPod firmware?

  • Do you use iTunes for it or something? How do you put your music on it with like podcasts etc. I have the iPod Nano 2nd Generation.

  • And people say Linux is incompatible

  • thats awesome

  • whats the video u played on your ipod

  • @wazwaz25 Gorillas

  • Song name?

  • When the title says Linux I always think it's going to do Compiz at any device. XD Cool alternative for the built in iPod firmware tho.

  • So if you install iPodLinux on your first generation nano you can play movies? if so, Im gonna get myself iPodLinux

  • @stoyashot

    yes it is possible then.

i did it on my nano too.

  • @pulsedrop

    sarcasm, folks

  • lol

  • you RUINED a perfectly good iPod!!!!!!!1

  • @pulsedrop you can always remove it

  • @pulsedrop He made it better dipshit.

  • @pulsedrop

    Yeah He made it better.

  • Cool

  • are the games preinstalled or do you have to download every game.

  • LINUX... simply the best.

  • @madtux01 How?

  • 00:10

    podzilla lol

  • I couldn't get this working, so I installed RockBox. No need to format anything, just install a bootloader, and RockBox. It's great.

  • im trying to figure out if that thing sucks or its ok

  • Can you have rockbox and Ipod Linux on the same ipod

  • @walli26

    Yes

  • sick cuz the first gen ipod nano was not intended to play vids.

  • I really just want to know why. Why even bother running this on an ipod?

  • Why climb mountains?

Because it can be done. It's hacking just for the sake of it, and the fun of doing it. Primarily I see it as an educational project, for learning and studying how embedded operating systems work.

If your not interested in any of the above. Pretend you didn't see it and just go on using your iPod as Apple intended. ;)

  • Yeah its not fake, but I personally never got much use out of it when I had my ipod Photo many moons ago. Couldn't get Doom to run for shit

  • I've done exactly the same.. put Ipod Linux on my 5G. It worked but wasn't actually that much use.

However if you really want to play Doom on the Ipod. Rockbox another open source Ipod project runs Doom just great.

  • I have a touch now. No need :) Doom runs flawlessly and I have 2 versions to choose from although one of them is a rail shooter which kind of sucks

  • Ipod nano 2g?

  • How would that be fake, looks pretty real to me...?

    It's PodZilla. Wikipedia it.

  • would it work on a ipod nano 4th gen 8g cuz i aint seen linux for them so im just wonderin

  • It doesn't work on a Nano 4th gen, only 1st gen.

Reason being the iPod Linux devs have reverse engineered the 1st gen Nano, and know how it works and know it's architecture.

  • can i do this with my 80GB ipod classic?

  • 80GB!!! HOLY FUCK

  • If the Classic is a 5G or 5.5G it will work... but if it's the current classic then no. Apple made some major changes to the hardware for the current Classics.

  • can someone give me a tut on how to install linuxx

  • Yeh. just go to the iPod Linux website, ipodlinux . org . And follow their tutorials and guides. They have an active helpful forum as well.

You must have a supported iPod though. Which is NOT the current Classic or any iPod Touch, and any Nano which isn't first generation.

  • i do have a suporting ipod but every time i go to their site there is no downloads or anything for the installer... maybe if you know the site you can give me a direct link

  • Well you can try sourceforge . net / projects / zeroslackr which is supposed to be an easy installer. Never tried it, so can't say if it works or not.

To be perfectly frank, iPod Linux is a very geeky and experimental hacking project. As a music player iPod Linux absolutely sucks, so it has very limited practical usage for me.

While I have tried it out on an old 3gen iPod and can confirm it works, I certainly don't bother with it now.

You might want to look at rockbox . org another project.

  • ...continued...

Rockbox been another open source firmware project for iPods and other players. Now I do use Rockbox all the time on my iPod 5gen video, because it's primarily designed as a really great and versatile music player, plus has Doom and loads of other goodies.

It's easy to install, works reliably, and is extremely customisable. IMO much better than Apple's own iPod firmware.

  • cool i was just wondering what it was like thanx for clearing it up... i like rockbox screw linux

  • Thing is Rockbox was designed with a purpose, to try and improve on the manufacturer's default firmware.

I see Linux on the iPod as much more like a science fair project. It proves something can be done, one can learn from it, but it doesn't actually serve that much practical purpose for using the iPod as a music player.

  • Would this play "flac" sound files?

  • No, But rockbox does. Google it.

  • will this work on an ipod nano 2g

  • but... why?

  • because we can

  • it lets you do more, especially for older ipods. like it can make the original ipods play videos. it also just lets you have more formats, and if you're a developer, you can make your own stuff like games for the ipod

  • It's compatible only with nano 1G, bcs the others have firmware issues.

  • Whoah, boots a lot faster than I expected it to. I'd like to run it on a different device, though... something cheaper than an iPod.

  • how about a router...

  • You can already do similar things with certain routers.

Replace their standard proprietary firmware with an open source one which offers many more features and functions. Something like OpenWrt and Tomato Firmware are examples of this.

  • I know.

  • isnt that rockbox?

  • dude plz tell me how u got that!

  • was it me or did my battery not last as long as if i were to use the original OS

  • Kewl I got the same iPod

  • awesome how do you get that

  • Gorillaz (Music vid)

  • but my computer isnt reading/detecting the ipod and niether is itunes.

  • do you know how to remove linux off an ipod? if so let me know because i want to take it off mine.

  • use the itunes recovery thing

  • format the piece of shit

  • @xbox381 -

well I thought it was pretty kool.

  • I love that iPod.

    First Generation Nano, right?

That's my favorite one out of every generation there is. :)

  • yeah NANO 1G FTW

I HAVE AN IPOD TOUCH BUT I LIKE MY NANO MORE

  • wow! you sure can click loud. very nice too.

  • If you think this is fake, what do you think about really advanced stuff like space travels etc etc? =.=

It's just an iPod running alternative operative system...

  • Hi Znews.

I wonder how you can explain that my cameras reflection is visible on the iPod screen if I used chroma key.

iPod Linux has been out for several years and that it can make the Nano 1G display video is far from news anymore.

Anyway, get your facts straight next time instead of showing the interwebs what a total idiot you are.

    Thank you sir.

  • Oh. I'm so sorry for calling you a fake. I thought I knew what I was talking about because my friend did the same thing, but chroma keyed it out because he couldn't figure out how to install Linux. I was just confused. Sorry for the mix-up. Next time I'll pay more attention before I try to call fake on a video.

    Sorry,

    ZNews

  • Thanks, no problems :)

  • i swear that ipod cant play videos, is that just to do with what apple wanted, and i also noticed that the video was a .avi, thats so awesome

  • i want that clicking noise on MY ipod

  • go to extras or settings

  • Check the sound settings, it should be there

  • lol that's fun but ultimately more useless than ever

  • genial como lo lograste?

  • podzilla xD lol

  • omg I'm in love with this clicking sound, wtf is wrong with me

  • nothing. unless we both are "wrong"

cuz i love it too.. haha

  • Same here :)

  • me too lol

  • sweet! will it work on ipod nano 3g?

  • Learn how to use google you fucking tool

  • If you have to ask you'll probably have a hell of a time getting any of it to work ;)

  • thats so cool!!! i want my old nano to play videos...

  • Wow. You managed to mutilate your ipod's software. Im impressed.

  • You sir, have excellent taste in music!

  • :D (filler)

  • Why would oyu wan to do that? i do agree linux is the top opperating system next to mac ( mac is just to pricy) but why on an ipod?

  • when he made this 3 years ago, the mac software was trash (in comparison to Linux that is)

  • Because we can!

  • i tied to install it but it said i need a "sys info" folder! HELP!!!

  • get a sysinfo folder.

  • NO! It was originally on my ipod. i remember

  • Hmmm, how did you get a music menu item? I installed mpd module in the modules folder but it doesnt run and i cant open music.

  • just a theme1

  • where con i do this?! i have an ipod nano..pink haha does it work on it?

  • lipod!

  • or tuxpod. or Itux.

  • i think someone deleted my comments, nots ure but i was calling two people fags. any help is appreciated.

  • FAIL.

  • OMFG A CUBE!

  • faggot

  • LMAO! Please don't comment again. I don't think I would be able to bear your immense intellect!

  • faggot is meatball, yeah, what about it?

Sorry, i'm from England not America fool.

  • The games are weak and the UI is ugly as sin. So what is the porpose of running Linux on your iPod? Better integration with your Linux desktop? I know iTunes for Linux does not exist, so I guess you would be using... Songbird?

  • faggot

  • lol you have never heard of wine? it lets any application that runs on any other operating system run on any other operating system.

  • Heard of it, but how well does it work?

And if it works so well, why are people still using virtual machines?

  • It have advantages and disadvantages.

    Adv:

-can run 3d applications (now I saw that OpenGL is supported on VirtualBOX)

-runs applications much faster than virtual machine

    Disadv:

-some applications you can't run (or part of them), but every week there is update so its fixing

-not well supported by windows programmers (I saw that uTorrent is designed for WINE and runs great- I tested)

I use both, when something don't run under WINE I run it under VirtualBOX.

    Its still better than Winblows.

  • Good to know - thanks for the run-down. I currently run Ubuntu on a Mac via VMware Fusion. It's working really well. The only problems I've encountered are from not understanding Linux. Fusion is solid though. The only thing I use Ubuntu for is running Blender, since there is a bug in Leopard that causes Blender not to work with Intel GMA graphics chips.

If I had a PC I would install Ubuntu and do as you described.

  • I havent experienced (because didn't test it on same machine), but some people told me that they run some games under WINE faster than under Windows XP (not to mention Vista which is worst OS).

But I would like to mention some popular (shareware) games which are designet for Linux (I didn't tested them): Unreal Tournament, Doom, Postal.

I can suggest some cool free games (I tested them on Ubuntu 8.04): Urban Terror, TileRacer, Warzone 2100, UFO: Alien Invasion, Nexuiz, Open Arena, Glest.

  • where can I d/l it

  • w w w . wine hq . com

  • does this work on either my 4th gen iPod nano 16GB product red or on my iPod classic 1st gen 80 GB?

  • I really like linux as an operative system, I use Ubuntu. but the thing is that I still need to get back to windows almost all the time to use Autocad and some specialized software that only comes with a wobbly colorful shitty window in the box.

That and the new evil docx format everyone I work with uses now.

  • Yeah, freakin' AutoCad... of all the stubborn Windows-only apps, this is the most infamous. Personally, I want it for Mac.

  • is this a first gen nano cause i used to have a second gen but it doesn't look like that

  • is this a first generation ipod?

  • wow i never heard of this but its pretty cool, too bad i don't have an ipod

  • from what i can see it's a nano but two generations back.

  • fucking real, i got it too :P

  • tHIS IS SUCH A FAKE IPOD

  • Fail. Look up podzilla. It's real. Don't be ignorant.

  • FAKE

  • its real my friend at school has it. trust me its real. how could he fake taht anyways lol

  • should have shown iboy being played

    pokemon on ipod ftw!

  • linux sucks!! i installed it and it didnt do anything just took up space on my ipod menu stays the same

  • then u did it wrong

  • well thin u probably didn't explore nearly any of the software that you can put on it

  • VI$TA & MICRO$HIT SUCKS!

  • No they don't. They make a great OS. I'll bet you're using it as you posted that

  • Vista is good.. just a hog.

  • They don't make great OS. They make big-sized infections, and call them OS.

  • Desktop linux eats ram for breakfast. Good embedded applications though, but so does windows CE. The only advantage is it's free, and that's only a pretend advantage because we all pirate anyway

  • Desktop linux doesn't eat ram. My computer has only 1 gb ram, and it could have only 512 mb. Then I heard about Vista computer my friend got, and well, seems like they offer nice breakfast for this new "great" OS. "Only" 4 gb ram. And by the way, desktop effects dont need ram. They work by your graphics card...

  • I've a comp running Vista Lite with 256MB RAM and it's a 2.2 celeron (with 128k cache) and it runs just fine. Try running linux with X-Windows on that, see how far you get.

  • i have less than 768mb of ram on my linux build and with wobbly windows, desktop cube, atlantis plugin, most of the animations, automatically changing wallpapers, custom transparent metallic theme, live system resource and temperature monitoring graphs, and firefox running this website, i have less than 384mb of ram used. lets see your "vista lite" look anything as impressive or even function as well and use less memory. normal vista with its crappy effects REQUIRES 1gb. linux doesn't eat ram

  • well on my mac mini, i have 2gbs of ram, but right now i have 4 windows of safari with 18 tabs open, 2 versions of msn (adium and Microsoft messenger) and itunes running and i have 350mb of ram being used (baring in mind the graphics card uses roughly 60)

  • i believe that. mac and its programs aren't very resource demanding, but, having 18 tabs on 4 windows doesn't say much because they could either be all of the same thing or just really simple websites.

i am not a fan on apple but i can say they make a much more stable and resource efficient os than microsoft
