This show benefits greatly from a rewatch. The first time through your focused on some characters and some of the bureaucracy and side characters are ignored but the second time around. Its amazing. Never seen a show change its face while still telling the one story. Def best show on the 2000's I've seen. Not saying Sopranos isnt good or whatever but what show goes so in depth into the police hierarchy and political system...this is a historical piece of art

Just finished watching Season 5 a few days ago. It was GREAT!. I heard that the general consensus was that the first 4 seasons were amazing. But that some people hated 5. I thought it was just as good. Don't understand why anybody hated it. It was amazing. I know not everybody hated it, but i read some people didnt like it.
First season is the BEST! I have watched the first four seasons so far and the first episode of season 5. Those are all amazing, but if I had to rank them, I would definitely say season one is the best!
Anyone who is a fan of The Wire has GOT to watch the documentary on YouTube called Crack House. It is fascinating. It's like watching the first series, but with real people!

I just think its a little too drawn out- season one is really a build up for two. Still it has some great messages and is just generally a good show :)

@josuneta Think again. My two favorite shows are: 1a The Sopranos and 1b The Wire. They both are the most well acted, well written, well put together dramas in history, however The Sopranos has just a SMIDGE more universal philosophical truths to be told. Issues such as motherhood, family, what it means to be alive as a human being NOT just an American are brought into play with The Sopranos. Not taking anything away from The Wire, genius as it is, just saying Sopranos has a LITTLE more to say.
@mabey202 I just got the whole series on DVD on Amzon for 50 something dollars. No joke. of course it is not the boxes of seasons. they're in these little cases. 1 per season. i had already got the firat twoi seasons for full price. then when looking for season three i looked the whole series and saw it was 50 bucks. didn't get the boxes, but still worth it.
i think that the wire is the better then the sopranos, because the characters are always changing, in sopranos you just get to know them better. although i had a hard time with nr 2 like everybody i guess, this serie in my opinion is better then sopranos because its just more intelligent and you just cant stop watching this brilliant piece of art!!!

As for The Wire being better than the Sopranos, that's a matter of taste an opinion, but saying that characters in The Wire are constantly changing while in the Sopranos they're not, is just incorrect and that's a fact: people in the Sopranos are constantly getting whacked, new ones keep coming into the picture, THAT is part of why the Sopranos was so successful: it remained fresh, with tons of variety and characters.
the sopranos is a great serie, dont get me wrong, and offcourse they changed, but not in that degree, f.ex bubbles, omar, mcnulty, kima, cedric, and offcourse avon and stringer, trough out the whole serie they keep changing there ways all the time, and something else that i forgot to say, is that see things in a bigger picture, the street dealing the murders the big bosses, the police doing everything to keep up, its just like more complex
@aziam53 Oh, you meant to say that the main characters in the Wire are "dynamic" themselves? i.e. they keep changing their ways and attitude? if so, that's the case with all good TV shows. People would get bored with "static" characters. The Sopranos is no different. But if you meant you get a variety of new characters, then the Sopranos' got way more new characters every season. Again, perhaps taste plays a role in that too, in that it changes perception.
I really dont know whats better sopranos or the wire? regardless i love them both, and as for the wire theme for me it has too be season 1 and 4 there my favorite.
@acitalianman13 I watched the sopranos 3 times. I'm just about down watching season 2 of the wire, and I can tell you it's a solid show, BUT you have to give it time to grow on you. It's not instant love like with the sopranos, the wire's appeal builds up. Also, you should check out Breaking Bad. That show is truly amazing!
The sad thing bout watching the wire is knowing that you will get to end.... and knowing that there will never ever b a TV series which comes close to it
@Raiden38146 in terms of realism, this show is truly a masterpiece, but in terms of entertainment and general appeal, the sopranos is the clear winner. If you look at the list of top 10 TV shows of all time, the Sopranos tops all of them. The wire comes in 2nd place most of the time.
@BlankVanHelsing The show never got "SHAFTED" it had an expiration date which is a good thing.. or else it would have ended up like heroes or lost :) They made a hell of a show so might aswell quit it at the top.. all creds to the people that worked on the wire :)
That has nothing to do with it being shafted at the Emmys. The date when a show ends and whether it was planned or not has nothing to do with critics and alike ignoring it.

Six feet under, The shield, The sopranos, Oz, Damages, all these great great shows don't even get close to the level of The Wire...

i swear, HBO was a GODSEND for great television a few years ago.

@mabey202 I just got the whole series on DVD on Amzon for 50 something dollars. No joke. of course it is not the boxes of seasons. they're in these little cases. 1 per season. i had already got the firat twoi seasons for full price. then when looking for season three i looked the whole series and saw it was 50 bucks. didn't get the boxes, but still worth it.

i think that the wire is the better then the sopranos, because the characters are always changing, in sopranos you just get to know them better. although i had a hard time with nr 2 like everybody i guess, this serie in my opinion is better then sopranos because its just more intelligent and you just cant stop watching this brilliant piece of art!!!

As for The Wire being better than the Sopranos, that's a matter of taste an opinion, but saying that characters in The Wire are constantly changing while in the Sopranos they're not, is just incorrect and that's a fact: people in the Sopranos are constantly getting whacked, new ones keep coming into the picture, THAT is part of why the Sopranos was so successful: it remained fresh, with tons of variety and characters.

the sopranos is a great serie, dont get me wrong, and offcourse they changed, but not in that degree, f.ex bubbles, omar, mcnulty, kima, cedric, and offcourse avon and stringer, trough out the whole serie they keep changing there ways all the time, and something else that i forgot to say, is that see things in a bigger picture, the street dealing the murders the big bosses, the police doing everything to keep up, its just like more complex

@aziam53 Oh, you meant to say that the main characters in the Wire are "dynamic" themselves? i.e. they keep changing their ways and attitude? if so, that's the case with all good TV shows. People would get bored with "static" characters. The Sopranos is no different. But if you meant you get a variety of new characters, then the Sopranos' got way more new characters every season. Again, perhaps taste plays a role in that too, in that it changes perception.

@acitalianman13 I watched the sopranos 3 times. I'm just about down watching season 2 of the wire, and I can tell you it's a solid show, BUT you have to give it time to grow on you. It's not instant love like with the sopranos, the wire's appeal builds up. Also, you should check out Breaking Bad. That show is truly amazing!

@Raiden38146 in terms of realism, this show is truly a masterpiece, but in terms of entertainment and general appeal, the sopranos is the clear winner. If you look at the list of top 10 TV shows of all time, the Sopranos tops all of them. The wire comes in 2nd place most of the time.

@BlankVanHelsing The show never got "SHAFTED" it had an expiration date which is a good thing.. or else it would have ended up like heroes or lost :) They made a hell of a show so might aswell quit it at the top.. all creds to the people that worked on the wire :)

Six feet under, The shield, The sopranos, Oz, Damages, all these great great shows don't even get close to the level of The Wire...
When you finish it, it is obvious like Elton John is gay : this is the best TV show ever made. Every single person I know who watched it agreed, so if you haven't seen it, stop loosing your time and go make something useful ;)
