  • that sounds bad

  • that motor is shot man. if i were u i would rebuild it if u havent yet. when i got mine i always done the motor first than fixed them up. the would haul ass. but any ways i would rebuild that motor.

  • OK, LISTEN-UP GEO OWNERS! Do not use 10-30 oil! Use nothing heavier than 5-20! The thicker viscosity oil holds the close-tolerance lifters open and valves burn! That being said, it's cheap to have a head rebuilt on a Metro. Hone the cylinders, and re-ring. Replace the main bearings. I've never had to bore the cylinders or replace pistons. This is a simple overhaul and the engine'll go for another 100K without trouble. Simple and cheap little economobiles. The convertibles are really fun!

  • Hey,

Mine had that noise, and it turned out to be a shattered piston! I rebuilt the motor, and it is doing fine now. I bored it out .020, and put all new components in. I put a white top on mine, and that looks cool.

  • I had the same car and engine sounded the same...it was a burnt valve...went again...then bought engine from junkyard...went again. Was convinced horrible engines but bought suzuki swift..(same engine) and have over 300k of original kms on it and it still runs fine. I think it was just bad luck getting engines that weren't maintained. This one has been amazing though.

  • Hey, air conditioned! Rare for convertible Metro.

I have a Diesel Geo Metro.... betcha ain't got one of them!

  • how can u not have a radio yeesh

  • shouldv just punched the gas and put it out of its missery

  • I have one of these 3 cylinder gems, and Mine sounded the same as that one. I hope you got it cheap, as I found #2 cylinder in the oil pan of mine.

Yours was a little rougher than mine (body), but looked well worth fixing up. I had another project to work on, so i put mine on hold awhile. My engine is being bored for oversize pistons right now, and will be back in about a week. You are better off rebuilding the Japanese motor (better tolerances than the US Motor..

  • That sucks dude -_-

  • How long do these three cylinder engines last?

  • Well, as with all machines, you get out of them what the owner puts in to them. I currently have five Geos, all of them 3-cylinders, and all seem to run fine for being nearly 20 years old.

  • @Prizm2356 regular maintenance will make is last for ever as with any car.

  • @Prizm2356 my geo metro 1.0 3 cylinder has 297,800 miles on it and i am still getting bout 40 psi per cylinder so for me they last for a long time. the only this is the lifters are starting to tick on it. but other than that if it makes it to 300,000 miles before i have to rebuild the engine i will officially wash it....maybe even some wax.

  • I forgot to add: always clean out your EGR crossover passage! A blocked and non-functional EGR is the #1 cause for burned exhaust valves (usually the #2 cylinder). Do this no matter how many miles are on the engine! This is truly cheap insurance! For more metro details, visit teamswift(.)net Tell em' CityConnection sent ya!

  • @odius94 Cleaned mine out first thing, no more check engine light!

Purrs like silk at 115k miles ('94 5-speed 3 door).

    I love this car!

  • A similar (but harmless) sound is a lifter tap. These Suzuki engines are notorious for lifter issues. However a lifter tap does not make the exhaust sound funny. It should still sound smooth at the exhaust pipe. A damaged exhaust valve will really mess with the exhaust sound. When in doubt: use a compression tester.

  • You need to get your engine looked at man. That is not supposed to sound like that. sounds like piston slap. We own this car and its not the quietest thing in the world but purrs, not ticks.

  • I know. I've already had a different engine installed into the car. This video was supposed to be more-or-less what a bad engine sounds like, so that people could compare the sound this one makes with one that they are looking to buy.

If a seller with a similar-sounding engine tries to tell an interested buyer, "Oh, they all sound like that...", hopefully a buyer would know better after having watched this video and BEFORE buying the car.

  • ah.well i do like the color. ours is ugly yellow but will be black soon

  • @suntzzu haha spun rod bearing.

  • Ha ha? Well, maybe, but mine sounded exactly the same, turned out #2 piston was shattered, probably from being overheated. I chose to overhaul my engine, in order to know what is in it.

It is much easier to build than a Chevy 350!
