  • Where is your Lee Factory Crimp die?

  • @garrison1776 I don't use a factory crimp die, some say you need to crimp to get good accuracy but it all depends on your rifle and load but i get good accuracy without crimping.

  • I love your hornet videos, they are the best on youtube.

I just have one question... What is the case life like with the hornet?

  • @freebeez123 Depends if you full-length or just neck size the cases, i only neck size and i get over 10 loads out of a case.

  • The Hornet has such a small powder capacity that some reloaders believe that a rifle primer can upset the powder column and actually jar the bullet out of position before the powder ignites. Pistol primers are weaker and in theory should not upset the ignition process. I have used both and have not detected a difference.

  • @jlhitchcox In my rifle groupe sizes using pistol primers reduced by nearly half so it can make a difference and i know others who have had similar experience so i think as with all reloading what works for one does not always work for another.

  • Great videos! I watched your reload video a few times and the CCI 500 primers caught my attention the first time so I have to ask why the pistol primers rather than small rifle? I'm asking because I might give this a try. If you don't mind my asking, what is the COAL for the SXSP? Again... Great video's !!!

  • @gvismac The 22Hornet is a low pressure cartridge especially when using LIL'GUN powder, i use pistol primers like most Hornet re-loaders because they give a better ignition and improve accuracy.

The COL with the 50SPSX is 1.8" - just fits the mag.

  • @weazle66 what does COL stand for?

  • @roaringwaterbay COL = Cartridge Overall Length

  • @gvismac The Hornet has such a low powder capacity that some think that the regular rifle primer has so much energy that it upsets the bullet before the powder ignites. this would theoretically impair the accuracy. I have used both pistol and rifle primers and really did not see a measurable difference.

  • @gvismac The Hornet has a very small powder capacity. Some reloaders think that the rifle primers jar the powder column and unseat the bullet before powder ignition. I have used both and saw no difference in accuracy.

  • I live in the UK and am going to buy a Ruger 10/22 and was just wondering, would those rounds fit in the Ruger 10/22 and if so, where can I get them and how much. Can I but them from you?

  • @ThePhan7em No the Ruger10/22 is a rim-fire rifle and not the same caliber, you can not reload 22lr cartridges. i buy my 22lr ammunition from my local RFD. price just depends on the brand and type you want.

  • So does the 50gr SPSX shoot flatter than the 40gr VMAX?

    How does that work?

  • @freebeez123 No i my tests and general shooting they have about the same trajectory over 200 yards, the 50SPSX has a slightly higher BC and although heavier still retains good velocity.

  • How much does reloading cost to get started, what all do I need? I've got some hornets I want to start reloading.

  • @mattamiller I use Lee Precision reloading equipment which is among the cheapest, i suggest you check out there website where you can see all the gear - they do sell complete reloading kits to get you started and then you just need to buy the right dies and cartridge components but it will save you money in the long run.

  • So you dont use a tumbler to clean cases? what is it u use? It looks like just steel wool

  • Yes, i just use fine steel wool to clean around the neck of the case.

  • I like the Ruger 77/22. I see it's only available in two models K77/22-VHZ w/24" barrel and the 77/22-RH w/20" barrel. Which model is better?

  • I haver used the standard rifle only the Varmint (VHZ) so can't say how well they shoot but i have seen a few reviews and they seem to be good - well as good as the shooter using them!

It's a pity Ruger don't make this rifle chambered for 218 BEE as that would be a real winner if you ask me, if they fitted it with a 1 in 12 twist barrel with about 15 -16 grains of LIL'GUN you would get around 3000 FPS with a 55 BT bullet like a V-MAX and that would be a winner - could easily be done.

  • @weazle66 Thanks for the reply. The last time I saw 218 Bee factory ammo on the shelf in a store had to be a few years back when ammo prices were going out the roof. They were Winchesters @ $89.99 a box. Yikes! I wish the 218 Bee was more popular, great little varmint round. Thanks again.

  • Great video, bro. You make the loading look like so much fun!

  • Excellant video.

  • Excellent video, very clear and detailed.

  • thank you. this video was pretty informative. ive been wondering how does someone reload. but i never felt like looking it up.

  • the K-hornet is a brilliant variation that minimises brass flow and head seperation but i have a ruger no-1 in standard hornet and have been reloading for years and never had problems after 20 or 30 reloads in somes cases. just as long as your not loading too hot the case life is excellent

  • good video, do use a crimp die on the hornet ,some people say you need one, to get the accuracy or is it a load of bull , my mates tryed to to put me off a hornet they say the accuracy not very good but after seeing your video's i had bought the cz and glad i did, everybody i know knocks the hornet why is that atb steve

  • I have only had a 22 Hornet for just a year now and i was a little worried about how it would perform as most of the stuff i see about it is slagging it off but i was actually amazed at how easy it was to load although a bit fiddly as it's a small cartridge but very economical.

Its a re-loaders cartridge in my opinion and as i re-load other calibers it made sense to me, i don't crimp or full length resize just neck size and it works for me as you can see!

Reloads cost about the same as 17 HMR!!

  • Great video! I've got the Ruger 77/22 in the Hornet as well and love it. Can you tell me what your target COL is for that bullet in the Ruger mag? What kind of MV are you achieving with the 12.2 gr of LG? Have you tried any hotter loads with that bullet and LG powder?

  • I seated this bullet to fit the Ruger mag and it's COL is about 1.8"

With 12.2 LIL'GUN the MV is 2780 FPS and i get very good accuracy in my rifle with Pistol primers, i have used heavier charges and 12.5-12.6 works quite well with about 2880 FPS but the lower charge gives slightly better accuracy.

Velocity is still about 2000 FPS at 200 yards.

I have some more videos of the loads being tested in the Ruger so take a look.

  • Hello.

I finally called Hornady today, about the 50 gr spsx, it looks like they will be on the market this year in Oct!

I think I'll reload Sierra # 1310 in 45 gr spitzer using Lil gun powder and the small pistol primers. wish me luck.

  • Looks like a good choice, shame there are no 50 SPSX available for you i got a baulk lot last year so i have a good stock to see me through the season.

Let me know how the 45 Spitzers perform in your rifle.

  • Greetings from New Jersey,

Thank you for your videos, I love the hornet, but I'ts been in the gun cabinet for some time, we both have the same gun, the thing is I can't det the hornady 50 gr sx anywhere, please help, just got the Lil gun powder and small pistol primer, but no one has the bullets.

    Thank you.

  • Well if you can't get them in the US where there made then there must be a shortage of them.

I have heard that bullets in general are in short supply these days and primers are also getting harder and more expensive to source, all reloading components have gone up in price over the last year so it seems.

  • 12.2 gr of powder? It seems a bit "heavy" no ? Seeing your loaded case before sitting the bullet it is obvious that powder will be compressed, which is not good at all !!!

  • @blue78falcon obviously knows nothing about the 22 Hornet and LIL,GUN powder!!

  • @weazle66 Sure, but when I see cases loaded so that powder gets compressed it gets back to basic reloading rules: not good at all !

  • @blue78falcon I know all about Laoding as you seem to have overlooked! You can use up to 13 grains of LIL'GUN in the 22 Hornet as is clearly shown in the Hodgon Load data manual! 12.2 grains is a low load and is still 10,000 CUP under max pressure for the Hornet.LIL'GUN powder is not like other powders as used in the Hornet so you can't use conventional rules!

There are hundreds of loads using compressed charges in load manuals if you look!

  • i to have a 77/22 and i have been thinking of starting loading my own due to cost and getting more out of the rifle, do you have to get anything added to your FAC to buy and store the powder and primers?

  • No, you don't need anything added to your licence to buy the powder or primers.

You may be asked to show your licence when buying components so that the supplier knows that you are authorised to use and hold that type of ammunition.

  • Another top video form the Weazle66 stable! You should post some of these up on the club page on Facebook!?

  • Looks good! I'll have to try these, I tried Nosler 50grain and couldn't hit a 2 foot target at 150 yards!! I guess they just tumbled.

  • If you used the Nosler 50 grain Varminter ballistic tip then they are quite long and probably won't stabalise in your rifle.

The Hornady 50 grain SPSX is a flat base and is 16.5mm long and is actually shorter than a 40 grain V-MAX where as the Nosler is about 5mm longer and needs a faster twist.

Most Hornets can handle the 50 SPSX without any problems and of course LIL'GUN powder works the best.

No good if your after the meat though as they are very destructive hence "Super Explosive".

  • Cheers for that good info, I'll get a hundred next time I buy and see how I get on. I dont mind explosive as I dont eat all of my kills.
