Joseph Stalin executed my Great Grandfather when my Grandfather was 17 for being a Christian, they came in the middle of the night and took him away never to be seen again, a month later we received a letter that he was a "Traitor" to the Communist Party for being Christian. Private secretaries basically do the activities you describe but political secretaries have much more practical power. They handle the management of the party/organisation - the united nations is led by its Secretary-General for example.

I use to celebrate the anniversary of the October revolution with an old socialist Russian friend who lived under Stalin's regime. His father was a revolutionary from 1917, assassinated by the stalinists.

It is the post of head bureaucrat - he also held a number of other posts such as liaison officer between Politburo and Orgburo. The entire Orgburo was full of Stalin's supporters. In essence in 1924 Stalin WAS the bureaucracy of the USSR. Of course he was back then one of many possible successor to Lenin but to argue that he had "no power before Lenin died" is pure BS. Your Wikipedia academics is laughable.

Furthermore The post of General secretary meant something different in the USSR than it did in other nations. Just because two posts in two distinct nations had the same title does not mean that those two posts had the same function. The real power had the people like everywhere: the president - Chairman of Supreme Soviet and prime minister - Chairman of executive commitee. Lenin was chairman of ec as well, Stalin not until 1939. The post of General secretary of party became post of power exactly cuz of Stalin. He didn't took post of power, he made his post of secretary to the post of power. But it took him 15 years.

Private secretaries basically do the activities you describe but political secretaries have much more practical power. They handle the management of the party/organisation - the united nations is led by its Secretary-General for example.

@tagaphon Also it is my understanding that Stasova was very influential during her tenure as head of the secretariat and was a member of the central committee (can't remember exactly when she was member of the CC but pretty sure it was when she was also head of the secretariat). I am not trying to say that Stalin was already all powerful when he was General Secretary - just that the position of General Secretary was one of considerable power even before Stalin turned it into that of leader.

They were of the same generation as Voroshilov and Budenny, the leaders of the Red Army at the start of WWII, who gave the Army such disastrous leadership that they all had to be replaced. Fact is that in 1941, the whole Army leadership had to learn how to fight a modern war and the Germans taught them.

If it wasn't for him, Russia would be under control of Germany, along with many other countries. This was directly because of his industrialization of Russia, which managed to modernize a country that was completely cut off from the rest of EurAsia during the Renaissance period. That's just one reason.

@RussianBarbarian You have no idea about war. The German battle plan was perfect but the moved to hastily. Russian was using military equipment and strategy was many decades behind everyone else. The only thing they where good for was distracting the german army. The only way the Allies would have lost WW2 is if the USA didn't fight. With in a month they pushed the german army back and gained more headway than any other country.

@ginkyi the united states had little to do with world war two except the fact that they gave russia, england and france large sums of money to help with their war against germany. america for the most part came in at the end of the war. both england and russia did more in world war two. i think it's sad so many countries had to fight germany alone but hey, politics is politics.

@MrJosefVStalin I agree, he was a great man. I have a massive framed portrait of him in my dining room, for me to look to for inspiration. This man was devoted to his work of making his state the greatest in the world, and pretty much acheived that. Everyone had a fearful respect of the Soviet leader and this brings the unquestioning loyalty that helped turn the tide of WW2. People talk of Hitler turning Germany around but this pales in comparison to Stalin's real work and effort.

I think we can look at it this way: If Germany had beaten the Soviet Union, then we Americans would be spending about 5 minutes in history class on the gassing of the Jews and years on the Soviet purges. Instead, history was written by the winners and it's the other way around.

"Only" a million died in Cambodia, it had a populationof 8 million @ the time. The thing about the political famine in Ukraine, it was a model for every communist regime since.
