I like Procol Harum..they have about 5 good songs..to put them in a classs with the Beatles(like 50 gold) or the Stones etc..is overstating their music.
Amazing as it seems, Procol Harem was appreciated, but relegated to secondary status--- there was that much unbelievably good music pouring out at the time. I remember buying Electric Ladyland and BS&T's Spinning Wheel in the same week.
Perhaps because of that Procol Harem's music stands fresher today and not over-played.
Gary Brooker's pub in Surrey, if he still owns it, is a nice homey kind of pub... good pub food and, although I missed the Wed. night jam I hear it s where Ringo's All Star's practice....
Best opening song of all-time for the Best Band of All-Time (Trower era).
I personally like "Home' a little more than this album, but it's damn close.
Saw 'em so many times, 10+, first 3 times with Trower ... at the Eastowne in Detroit circa 1971, Johnny Winter jammed with them after -- Trower much, much better.
Yes, Trower was the guitarist. I think he left right after Grand Hotel. As a drummer, I would like to point out how great Procol Harum drummer BJ Wilson was. This was a very virtuosic band.

the mannequin is my English teacher in my senior year (1972), a prolific woman , Beowulf, MacBeth, etc.............love you Carol....hugsssssssss......kisses where-ever you are
shine on brightly is no doubt the best LP ever produced. All the numbers are perfectly connected and are in fact one single perfect presentation which can never be reproduced, or matched.
this music is so good that that even the classical masters would have been impressed.
four of us took strong doses of LSD lay down and put this on. no way to describe what happened...but life changed, opened, fear gone, all the dreck we drape ourselves in washed away ... and the joyful search began
@thestoryplease - ahh, yes: a select group of friends walked into the Fillmore East one wonderful early 70's summer night to see this band, and the impact of hearing them open their set with this song has always been appreciated and never forgotten ... if I recall, that psychoactive substance you mentioned figured rather significantly into the evening's festivities, too ... much of the Fillmore audience was shining brightly that night, even when we weren't looking
@thestoryplease I remember being at the Fillmore East and at times the "fumes" where enough to get you high. I saw Procol Harum in 69 or 70 they were recording live at the time (they asked s to all be "nice" , I do remember them doing shine on brightly., live but at 60 my brain my be befuckeled...
@TheGB1950 - I saw them at the Fillmore West in 1970.. they were top-billed.. their "warm up" bands were Blodwyn Pig, and Leon Russell and the Shelter People.. Bill Graham took my ticket at the door.. talk about "fumes".. one of the move unbelievabely perfect concerts I ever attended..
This is, without a doubt, is among Procol Harum's (Gary Brooker and Robin Trower) finest work. I bought htis album in 1968 and it is just as incredible today. I turned my rockstar son on to album this when he was 13 and it still blows his mind when he hears it.
timeless music; as good if not better than when it came out 40+ years ago. progressive, intelligent, beautifully composed and expertly arranged, sung and played. that's procol to me...
This is the set list when PH played at The Electric Factory in Philadelphia June 1970. I'll never forget that show. Still There'll Be More Wish Me Well The Devil Came From Kansas The Dead Man's Dream Your Own Choice About To Die Juicy John Pink Nothing That I didn't Know A Salty Dog Whisky Train Whaling Stories Encore A Whiter Shade of Pale
I saw them in St. Louis & Toronto. I do a rendition of this song, & I've got to be in top form to do it. Break out the strong coffee for this one! Regards, The '62 Mathew St. Band (1 Man-Full Group Retro)
Just to date myself:) I saw Procol Harum play the entire Shine On Brightly @ the Fillmore East in 1968, just after the record had been released. They came on stage in the dark and opened with this song!
@jeffreygodspeed good idea its going to be a tricky affair to get them in they dont seem to like british rock groups if the moody blues get in they can and vice versa the pretenders got in so why not
I wish people would appreaciate more of this band - put them in a respectible place with the beatles , kinks & velevet underground - they deserve it !!
Thank you for posting this little treasure! The quality is quite good. Please consider posting 'In Held Twas in I'..! Gary Brooker: vocals, piano Robin Trower: supersaturated guitar Keith Reid: words Matthew Fisher: organ, circus organ Dave Knights: bass B.J. Wilson: drums
Abba is in the R&R Hall of fame and Procol Harum is not. Am I living in the Bizarro world?
