  • I love Isabel Allende.

  • This woman is all talk but makes no sense. All i heard was women can practice with out license in third world countries. Plant a few trees and things will change in Africa. Women in power Margaret Thacher and Indira Gandhi who both sent the soldiers on wars and if I use this lady's logic then they both made a colossal harm to the women and children as collateral damage victims. She talks about brain washing young boy and instilling and enforcing feminized masculinity doctrine making them mangina

  • This lady is pure evil in flesh. She has no idea how the world works a bloody commie. You are not even worth to be in a kitchen, you belong in a coffin 6 feet under just like the old men you were speaking about. I have warned women about not taking this feminism thing to the extreme. The corsa concordia episode where the women and children were left to fend for themselves and the men saved them selves first. Well what did women expect from men when they are bombarded equality right from they

  • enter preschool. This was just one of the incidence if the concordia was away in deep seas the number of dead women would be much higher and the reason would be men were just indifferent to them. Be afraid because men are becoming more and more like women.

  • I'm not too sure she's the evil sexist she's made out to be in the comments. Went into the video expecting one though after reading the comments. If women only own 1% of the world's resources, that need to change. Every human needs enough resources to take care of basic needs and interests. Philosophy is needed for governance and most women aren't really into philosophy, which is a problem

  • If you've read her book House of the Spirits, you should be familiar with the protest songs about the Fox and the Hen. I actually wrote what I think one of those songs would sound like for an English project a couple years back. You should give it a listen and see what you think! Great book

  • Wonderful woman! wonderful writer!!!!!! I love her.

  • I see that still we have a lot of macho man in the present century ( XXI ) and they feel very bad when listen the truth that Isabel tell us . I`m proud be a chilean like you Isabel Allende.

  • Welcome to the biggest double-standard ever. Women demand that they are seen and loved for the persons they are; that they are not just women. However in reverse they will only care about what man you are: how much of a strong man you are? how socially valuable are you? What is your career? what are your ambitions? Women are nothing but a hypergamous/amorous bundle of basic instincts wrapped in a perpetuated lie that those instincts is a broad and deep emotional spectrum.

  • Even when i like her a lot as a writter, beside the fact that she is a woman, comes from latinamerica and is a feminist, (I'm a latinamerican woman, feminist and love literature), I have to say, the thing isn't about if men rul the world, the thing is ONLY men rul the word, this isn't about who will do things better, this is about equal rights, this is about your voice making a difference when you speak up as a woman. let's put aside all the hate and prejugements, they won't take us a anywhere

  • WTF? Look at the top comment. This is as bad as racism.

  • great writer ^^

  • this speech makes me sick to my stomach. someone should have thrown a rock at her.

  • @spencerg4488 Seriously, what the hell was that? Judge someone by the content of their character, not the color of their skin or what's between their legs.

Most people in that room were probably liberals who hate racism, yet they cheer for a sexist hate speech. It's all about a feeling of self-righteousness to them (to feel good about themselves), not what is actually moral.

  • Comment removed

  • @bac1089 i don't understand what you're saying. i'm judging this person based on the 20 minutes of hate speech she delivers, which i'm sure was very well rehearsed. though, i can agree with one part of your response. liberals do absolutely love sexism. most liberal men are liberal because it's the one way those effeminate pussies can get laid.

  • hate speech.

  • wow are most of you brainwashed? Applauding such a hate filled speech? Really?

  • I wish she would write about dudes more often.

  • wow... no words...

  • Need! Help! Now! I need to reference this video and I am stuck! I need the producer(s)' name(s) and the year it was published. Please help.

  • Its a good idea, but sorry. From a purely economical standpoint, someone isn't going to pay someone money if its 'right'. If this social taboo thing exists, they will follow it since the company would save money. I think its less about the 'men do it better' viewpoint nowadays and more about the 'lets follow the social norm and save some $ by not going against the grain'.

If equal pay becomes a law? Yeah, then it'll change. Without that, I doubt the pay problem will change anytime soon.

  • I believe that everyone is equal not in stupid femminism

  • Una Chilena en TED! :)

  • If civilization had been left in female hands we would still be living in grass huts.

    -Camille Paglia

  • @booiggers You're not seriously quoting Camille Paglia, are you? She's completely insane.

  • @gummybrain I already did..I don't care whom she is but what she said has a lot of truth in it.

  • Well, just between the two of us, definitely I see more advantages being a man, at least in my workplace. We get around 30%+ than female workers doing the exact same job and only men are allowed to do extra-hours (a very important factor to us.)

  • she's just trying to make a statement and if you want to achieve the interest of your audience, you can hardly ever make a statement of moderation. Therefore she comes out extreme, and thus also fulfills her own statement of the fact that she does not like boring people. And yes, women are being treated very poorly in some parts of the world. That's basically the conclusion. Most of us here most likely have no idea thus none of us can say anything truthfully reflecting the scale of the topic

  • Wow. This is really scary now. At the beginning of the video it says "Remarkable People" and Isabel Allende is one of the people pictured there. If you hate men, want them to DIE off, and believe that women are superior in every way then you are considered to be a remarkable person.

  • @theignoredgender It seems as though you've missed the point. She's not against men. She against men that beat women, that continue the belief that women are inferior. And don't even give me the bullshit that you're the 'Ignored gender' I'm guessing you're a man and therefore you have power that I as a woman will never have. You will be paid more than I will, you will have sexual power, and I will not in society. So don't even give me that bullshit that she's trying to take down men.

  • @Ritzhefreak

What power do I have that women don't? What is sexual power? I never heard of that. How do you know that I get paid more than you do? Do you know how much I get paid?

Well when this female Hitler says stuff like "old men are hopeless and need to DIE off" how is that not like saying she is trying to take down men?

  • @Ritzhefreak

I can't believe you say that she isn't against men when she has not even said one positive thing about them.

You want to talk about power? females are favored in my job . The applications specifically say "women and miniorites are encouraged to apply". I have been working at my job part-time for over 3 years and they gave the full-time position to a female who has never worked there before.

  • @Ritzhefreak

You as a woman have every advantage. You are given favor in jobs via legal discrimination called "affirmative action", Your gender doesn't make up the majority of the homeless, suicides, and job-related fatalities, you are entitled to discounts and freebies just because of your gender, you live on average 5-7 years longer than men, a lot more funding and research goes towards women's health, your gender isn't negatively portrayed in the media, ect...

  • @theignoredgender Tell that to the women who who were brutally murdered due to honor killings. Tell that to women who are denied the opportunity to further their studies by the simple fact that they are born female. Tell that to women who aren't allowed to vote, who are forced to cover themselves up from head to toe while the men are allowed to dress how they like and enjoy freedoms the women of their country cannot. Think before you speak. please, it's insensitive to say the least.

  • @pinkdevil3010

Right and saying "old men are hopeless, we need to wait for them to DIE off" is very sensitive, touching, and worthy of laughter and a standing ovation. She says something sick and twisted like that, I state that I have a problem with that hateful statement, and people here defend HER. Misandry is everywhere you turn.

  • @pinkdevil3010

This is true but that's a straw man arguement, justifying Feminist fascism by cherry picking injustices around the world. O by the way, men are not free, they must adhere to strict dress codes as well (haircuts for example). Not only are you an idiot adhering to a fascist ideology, you are ignorant to what the Middle East is really like, obviously some dumbed down American TURD who was spoon fed lies through the Corporate Propaganda network.

    Dumb ass!

  • @6evorev6

    Refrain from using childish insults.

Your arguments are laughable. "strict dress codes"? Please. In your society, what kind of backlash would happen to you if you didn't get a haircut? A few years ago, they tried to pass a local law in Indonesia mandating female students to wear a headscarf during a certain day. Made it into A LAW. In many societies men enjoy far greater freedoms. That's the truth. Stop skewing things. And American?that's also laughable. Stop making assumptions.

  • ProtoCosmos clames Allende advocates hatred to all men. You totally distort her words/intensions. There is no reason to feel targeted, unless you are in the category of men who uphold the unjust inequality in the world. You don´t fuss about the horrible conditions women and children around the world suffer every day in outdated inhuman power structures. Allende mention also the plight of poor people, which includes men of course in the equation. The hate you detect is your own projection.

  • @Konnie11121314

She only speaks of men in a negative light and always speaks of women and children as the victims despite all the advantages women have over men. SHE is the one who doesn't fuss about the horrible conditions of men around the world.

"old men are hopeless we need to wait for them to DIE off" "If women ruled the world things would be better"

Not backing anything up with any kind of statistic. That supremacist is just giving a hate speech up there.

  • @Konnie11121314 Bull ! She makes no mention about how BOYS are forced to die in wars and are shunned as cowards by women if they don't go to war. I never hear feminists speak out objectively about injustice... only for other women. I do a lot to help people , and I don't discriminate or judge them based on whether they have internal or external reproductive systems. I volunteer every holiday, I donate money and food and my time to help people. So your assertion about me is pure rubbish.

  • This is absolutely shocking. What vile hatred. And the sheer vacuity in her logic, the glaring statistical omissions, and the mindless acceptance and blind applause of her foul hatred of the very essence of maleness. Please people, if you love your sons, and if you have any compassion for truth ... stop enabling this sort of madness.

  • She know lives in California with her american husband

  • look, she is not dedicating this to all the men in the world, of course that if you think a bit more, she is refering to those men that are in someway, supremacist, and i'm not afraid to say that it hurts more to relaize that this kind of men exist in any country, sorry about the writting mistakes

  • "So nobody knew what the heck was wrong with me" lol ahahah. A breathtaking speech, how can you do not love this woman! :D

  • I agree, it is true.

  • If she isn't already, Isabel should be the ambassadress of feminism!!!!

  • I'd have to say this is by far my most FAVOURITE TED talk ever!!!!! I haven't heard of her books, but look forward to reading them & hopefully hearing more talks by Isabel! I loved how she wove the poignant sorrow & pain with the humour throughout her talks, showing she doesn't consider these issues to be completely dark & pessimistic nor a joke. The humour suggests there is a light at the end of the tunnel & IT IS POSSIBLE to reach it!!!!!

  • she is peruvian

  • @vanlex100 eeeeee... No xD

  • @vanlex100 I thought she's from Chile

  • @lilsmiley16840 ella nacio en Lima , Peru..........she born in LiMA ,PERU you can see in wikipedia

  • @ivan1977alex She is still Chilean citizenship

  • @lilsmiley16840 Isabel Allende was born in Peru but to Chilean parents. Shes Chilean 100% -- her uncle was Salvador Allende, he was president of chile and he commited suicide during a coup d'etat Anyways.. chilew as going through hardships during that time so her parents were probably living in peru here she was born.

  • @vanlex100 I saw an interview where the host said she's from Chile. But it doesn't really matter. No big deal. I think she even mentioned on her speech that she's from Chile.... Anyway, I like her work. NP

  • They made us watch this in English I.B.

  • I see some peoples who cant made the diference between a intelligent person, and political issues, this woman is a World citizen, may will be normal in the near future to talk in that way,and yes ,she is part of a left side family of my country Chile, and as far we know, the most intellectual peoples in the world, they belong to the left side.

  • My Hero <3

  • Is she a socialist or a communist??????

  • love her. but i don't get why she has to crack jokes about sophia loren. not so clever.

  • She is the daughter of Chilean president Salvador Allende, who was overthrown by a US backed coup designed by the CIA. With the intent to allow multinational corporations unregulated control to Chilean resources, which had much more fairly shared under Allende, by instilling Pinochet who controlled dissent with death squads and torture.

  • @scrabbleking1965 She is not the daughter of Salvador Allende, her that was Allende's cousin.

  • @sashaleem YES I was wrong, her father and Salvador were 1st cousins, that make her a "1st cousin once removed" from Salvador. Salvador also had a daughter Isabel, who would be this Isabel's 2nd cousin.

  • @scrabbleking1965 True my friend but her father was a first cousin of Salvador Allende

  • She speaks of socialism, human rights, anti-capitalism, revolution and pigs rich political right. But she has made a million dollar fortune and is a very rich woman, writing for the Yankees stupid and ignorant Americans.

  • Just one simple word... passion

  • man she is great!

  • I love her short story 'The Schoolteacher's guest'!

  • A Woman after my own Heart!!! Very Inspirational!!! Love her Message!!!

  • I knew her last week!!! She is lovely!!!

  • i just love her. i love her absolutely and without question. she is a formidable talent and enlightened soul.

  • eva luna sucks ass

  • I haven't seen where the blurbs on her books mention her wonderful whimsical humor. I have laughed aloud more often reading her books than any I can recall, save maybe Truman Capote or Jorge Amado. It's not like she's trying to be funny; it's her portraying herself, the narrator, as over-the-top breathless about what's going on in the story. She is The Master of the whopper.

  • I mention Allende in The History Song.

  • Comment removed

  • that was wonderful!

  • her version of reality or the real complex version that has to do with history, biology, and the pure relationship between both sexes. you have to ask the question as to why wars begin in the first place. hypothetically if women were to rule the world and become dominant, would this hypothetical situation not lead to prejeduce toward men. probably, considering that the scenario itself revolves around the idea of women somehow dominating men! lets build an equal society, celeb masc and fem

  • DarthmouthAlum:

I guess women want special treatment just like Dartmouth grads. Seems like Ivy League educations aren't worth as much as the hype they create.

  • It's astonishing that people consider this drivel intelligent. This woman decries sexism, yet celebrates an event (within the first three minutes of her schpiel) in which only women are allowed to carry the Olympic flag. Would we celebrate an event where only men were allowed to carry the Olympic flag? Women like Allende whine about equality, but real equality is the last thing they want. In lieu of true equality, they want preferential treatment. That's the flag Allende and her ilk fly.

  • @DartmouthAlum96

let me guess. you were abandoned by a woman?

  • Hopefully you guessed better on your SATs than you did on this issue. There's no abandonment in my background; just a low threshold for the gynohypocrisy Allende and those like her represent.

  • am i right in guessing you're a man? if so you kind of make her point. :)

  • @styrofoamheart LOOOL! Exactly

  • i just don't get the whole fear of women thing. i'm a man and i LOVE strong women.

  • Comment removed

  • @DartmouthAlum96 her entire speach is revolved around the same philosophies as most, such as her, argue. we have to femanize men and somehow that's a solution? there's nothing wrong with the way you think, despite what anybody tells you. she is sexist. she's trying to lump all of history together. more specifically war and the powers of government. i would love to see a woman in power, but i'm not blaming men for all the atrocities of humanity.

  • love isabell, she's incredible!!!!!!!

  • It made me laugh and cry at the same time. Good story telling! A great passionate talk!

  • Great talk and I really liked it. I would love to know what do you think about passionate characters in western so called developed countries where women who get treated as a sex object and sexualized. as a women activist ones said; the only passport for women's recognition is their body and their appearance, their intelligence is not valued. now days women's body is used even to advertise for the lest valuable commodity. I thinks Women's oppression is happening worldwide.

  • she is great

  • I am 200% with you, and it gives me great pleasure to read from you, sorry because I do not speak English

  • Good, that's why I love Isabel Allende. She really inspired me

  • that was good!

  • she is wonderful....

  • love her!!!!! And so proud! She makes me to remember how much brave we women can be

  • super me encanta mi compatriota

  • Comment removed

  • ahh gee another faceless internet git. There are plenty of you, take your own advice.

  • rare woman.

  • Beautiful speech.. beautiful woman!

  • absolutely divine! i'm intrigued. definitely sparked something inside me.

  • She´s my favorite writer, a good example of what the woman can do... You´re my heroe...

  • @edutube29

Let's see. Put women in all positions of power, wait for old men to DIE, and make men more feminine. Men = Bad and Women = Good. She's not hero she is a supremacist. She acts as if all men are worthless and women are just flawless. She reminds me of Hitler.

  • @theignoredgender It's amazing isn't it ? I've heard people ask how it was possible for so many people to detach themselves from empiricism and virtue, to blindly follow tyrannical leaders, that ultimately resulted in so much horror. And here we are given a chance to see it unfurl before our eyes. The sheer craziness of the audience approvingly laughing at her deeply sexist remarks, and the mindlessness of the standing ovation ... it's hard to comprehend that scale of vacuity.

  • @ProtoCosmos

I know. It's a shame too. In today's society, people can say such awful things about ALL men, like Isabel does here. "they're hopeless, they should die, women are superior in every way, men should be like women because being like a man is like being inferior" and should you say anything against that like "hey, that's clearly sexist and hateful" YOU somehow come off like the bad guy. It's scary.

  • @theignoredgender Exactly ! You have to defend yourself for defending yourself.

  • @edutube29

That's because your a female supremacist bigot

    FUCK YOU AngloPIG fascist!

  • oh my God, she's awesome

  • respect allende

  • Isabel Allende is one of the greatest Chilean women

    "..y zapatos divisé

    con pulseras en los pies

    y no estabas tú..."

  • Isabell Allende is an inspiration to women everywhere.

  • she's reading parts from her book 'sum of our days'...i'm currently reading it. i have read almost all her books that are available in our country. she is an amazing woman. she is smart, strong, and beautiful.

  • We need to start her and now no matter how small. A micro loan through FINCA to a woman's business, a donation to Women For Women, a kindness to a woman in need we know.

  • The best part of all of these speeches are the audiences. They laugh in all the right places, they cry in all the right places.

  • She's such an incredible woman!

  • love her

  • INSISTO, UN VERDAERO HIJO DE PUTA

  • you make me feel strong, our time is almost here

  • nacida en PERU!

  • de nacionalidad padres CHILENOS!

  • She is the type of feminist that I respect and understand what their agenda is.

If I try to think objectively, I realise that this world would be a better place if women were in power.

  • I would love to marry a wpman like her.

  • A beautiful speech.

  • I love her! she is so wonderful and her sense of humor is in her nature..

  • Women have shorter feet than men only so they can stand closer to the stove.

  • I do want her in Chile, and judging by her books success in Chile, lots of people think the same. Besides, the ones who governs the country now are as sold as her (capitalism protected by socialist), which tell you the political views of THE MAJORITY.

She is, first of all, a writer, not a politician, she lives out the money produced by the books, it is her choice, as any other human being. Respect that. As a you respect a nurse or a janitor doing and living just out their jobs.

  • she is pretty ... :)

  • why are womens feet samaller than mens?? so that their feet can fit under the kitchen sink :L

  • This is nothing new though. This happens whenever the standards for proof become lax, and prosecuters and hunters get thier way through ideology, forced confessions, public hysteria, circular reasoning, and moral panic/politics. The Satanic Ritual Abuse myth was a modern day Salem, and the violence against women/womens shelter movement has achieved the same level of mythology and injustice. In Nigeria, there is a similar moral panic occuring over "witch children" also fed by myths.

  • It is very hard to listen to this much bullshit and intellectual dishonesty.

Why is TED giving a platform for this hateful (or is it "passionate") Oprahesque ideologue?

  • What is so dishonest?

  • its a mix of white noise, propaganda, and intellectual dishonesty.

she claims to "know" women well.

Women are forced into arranged marriage, but so are men.

There are more women refugees, because the men have been killed.

For every dollar given to speciall programs that help women only, 20 dollars are given to special programs that help men only, pure nonsense!

Her trickle down theory of "abuse" is also naive, as is her claim that more empowerment for women causes prosperity for all.

  • We label all violence of master towards pet as abuse, and all violence of adult towards child as abuse, and rightly so. But these advocates continue this logic into gender and label all violence and harm done by men towards women as abuse. Implicitly they accept and spread the idea that women are powerless and innocent by default, just as children or pets are presumably, and we are told that this unfairness is justified by differences in AVERAGE earnings.

  • Fortunately for everyone, Political Correctness is self-contradictory, and eventually gives way to truth. As more awareness is spread about the realities of intimate partner violence in lesbian couples, and in gay couples, people will see that there is much more to the picture than "wife beating" and that it is really not a gender issue, or one of good vs evil. The way i see it, its an issue of TRUST, self-control, and the decision to tolerate ANY violence in an intimate relationship.

  • If you look at how abusers are profiled, they are said to be suprizingly charming and witty, they are said to be in denail about thier abuse, they are said to blame thier partner (the innocent victim) - this profile is entirely based circular reasoning and anecdotal evidence, and that much should be obvious.

They are also said to be particularly selfish, stubborn, fake, and to lack a real soul/conscience, just as any person would seem through the eyes of thier enemy. What about the other story?

  • The profiles that are circulated through the media, various institutions, and presented to law professionals, are also overtly sex biased, and rely on gendered language to intentionally give the false impression that women are normally victims & men abusers. Female "survivor" testimony is taken at face value by experts who are not interested in truth, but advocacy, & are satisfied with a half story. But, if a man claims victimhood, then he fits the profile of manipulative abuser. Catch 22!

  • [repost] @[[MayasNet|dbalieiro]]

  • (T_T) ... 4:00 - 4:55

  • I love her.

  • I believe the stats Isabel Allende describes on how women are abused and subjugated, however I also know of situations where men are abused and subjugated unfairly by women with a degree of political power and enforcement. Or children abused by women.

I support what Allende stands for, I'm just saying ... avoid broad blanket prejudices.

  • This is brilliant. She is brilliant -- and 100% right!

  • The best writer ever!

  • Greatest writer!!! love her!

  • la ciudad de las beastias and el reino del dragon de oro are the bests and only books that i have liked and that makes me wanna read more and sad when the book is over!

  • She is the best of the best!!!

  • what an amazing speech. thank you isabel allende for inspiring me.

  • A fantastic inspiration for both men and women.

  • I love Isabel Allende. I started reading spanish literature after having read La Casa de los espiritus. And I can say with all certainty that I have not read a more beautiful, impressive and unforgetable novel. I highly recommend it.

Isabel Allende...una de las mejores escritoras de America Latina y del mundo entero.

I wish I could meet her one day.

  • "Women are not equal to men"?

That's a dangerous game to play.

Discriminating comments on an anti-discrimination video aren't gonna get you a whole heap of positive replies.

  • Men have penises, women don't. Women have breasts, men don't.

That solves the argument of "equality" for me.

    Regarding rights and injustice:

Nobody has any rights. All we have are temporary agreements. There's no such things as "rights", in nature. It's the responsibility of each one of us to fight for what we want and so "rights" were born.

Also the way others perceive you is almost entirely your responsibility, and doing something about it, works better than whining (my own experience).

  • De4sher: Nobody has any rights.

Rights are a human construct. So is all of human civilization itself. So are houses, cars, roads, bridges, highways. Is civilization illegitimate because it does not exist "in nature"?

    Good luck!

  • I think I was saying the same thing, in a more destructive way :)

Yeah a lot of things are human constructs, and I think it would be a good thing from time to time to remember that. I daily come across people who tell me "i have no right to this and that", and I just laugh. Obviously I have the "right" to do everything I can. It doesn't mean I would be stupid to do things that are not in my interest though :)

  • I don't see how you can perceive her marvellous speech like that...I really don't. She opens up for males to participate in a strife for an equal society..in terms of condition. I think this is an excellent video.

  • If this is a feminist, I'll marry one. <3

  • amazing.

  • I'm Argentinan (that country next to Chile, a little bit bigger :S) Anyway, I love the way she keeps her chilean accent even talking in english, that shows her nationalism. I do admire her :).

  • She and her stories are compelling and impressive!

  • her words are powerful

    ...=]

  • Isabel Allende se ha convertido en Paula Abdul??????

  • Isabel Allende was my inspiration to study Spanish Literature....Muchas gracias por todo Isabel!

  • Como me encanta Isabel Allende, tengo el privilegio de hablar su misma lengua. Isabel is one of my favorite writers and I truly share many of her philosophies of life.

  • wow,she is sure electrifying.

  • Ok, it's a men dominated world. I say give the power to the women, and we'll have a whole different world with different problems. That's not the solution.

Also, can you blame the alpha males for being strong? Can you blame them that other people follow? No, The followers should be blamed. but that's every one of us.

We, as a species, have needs and problems that feminism can't solve, and we may not even be prepared to solve. Passion is good. Too much passion can blind though.

  • Strenghth of a different nature arose when tying the umbilical cord with hair or watering a tree drop by drop. This passion and strength is born of survival and there are very few women who have the opportunity to access this youtube site that can speak from that perspective.

  • It is not those who have 'not' experienced the necessary act of compliance for survival that contemplate the opinion that followers should be blamed. It is NOT every one of us, and blame THE VICTIM is unecessary and worthless as it is a power position that considers that every one of us is to blame.

  • I'm just saying that every one of us should be (should feel) responsible for our own lives, and try to do something about it. I'm not suggesting we should all go around blaming everybody else, that wouldn't help at all.

Furthermore, couldn't passion arise in everyday situation? Do you really need extreme conditions for it to develop?

Also, if you reply, please try to use shorter sentences, i'm not a native speaker and it took me almost 10 minutes to understand what you were trying to say :)
